Ok....I have the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 already so that's a start. The 85mm I heard is a rather specialised niche lens, as in being used for one purpose, so was thinking of getting the 11-16 for not only portrait but also other applications which it shines at, such as street photogrpahy, clouds/sky, and big landscapes.
Sometimes I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the Universe is that none of it has tried to contact us...

yea can look into selling the 50 1.8 and invest in a 50 1.4, 85mm is one of the nicest portrait lens, something i am planning to get down the line myself more head and shoulder shot on a crop sensor but no reason why you can't step back and the compression effect you get with a telephoto lens is awesome for portrait 11-16 being ultrawide angle you won't get the background separation you want for portraiture

not sure about nikon but canon's 1.8 has really poor AF and while sharp for the price the bokek balls are ugly...sigma's 50mm 1.4 is really good for the price as long as u can find one that AF well so expect to play a bit of lottery finding a good copy

If you are talking about the older AF-D models, there were lots of reports of the F1.8D being a touch sharper than the F1.4D once stopped down to about F3.5 or F4.
Most lenses don't perform at their best wide open - they are both good, but sharpness improves as you stop down. In the wider ranges, the F1.4 gets great from about F1.8 onwards. The F1.8 gets great from about F2.8 onwards.

So if the goal is to shoot wide and smooth, then the F1.4 delivers more than its 2/3 stop spec difference would indicate. If the goal is general purpose shooting then the 1.8D is better value for money.
Not sure if these rules still apply with the AF-S 1.4G and 1.8G

I went for the 50/1.4D on crop. Nice lens, renders beautifully, have hardly used it - didn't find the angle and working distance much use - too short for a portrait when standing back any distance, and not long enough for a close up face shot without being in their face.
I've preferred to use the 70-200 or 85 for portraits. (Now I've moved to FX, the 50/1.4 will probably get more use as a 'normal' lens - but I still preference zooms when I pack my bag)

UWA lenses are great for portraits of kids that kids love and parents hate. Get a kid 30cm away from it and pulling faces, with all that distortion and they love it - but mum is unlikely to want to hang it on the wall.
They also work well for fun distorted pet photos - that huge DOF is handy if they don't sit still, but the working distance is short, and lens slobbering can be a problem.

Been a while since I took any photos I was really happy with, but this morning at work saw some nice effects in the mist, so got a couple which I thought turned out alright.

A section of the Brisbane River at Goodna. This was my view from my work site today 8-)

This is the best of the bunch....but its not a keeper. I tried a bit of post processing to save it, but I don't think it helped. Whats wrong with it, one may ask? I just think its boring...

Just think that last one might be better in high contrast B&W. Might even work posterised, say 4 or 6 levels. Perhaps some of the others might work better in B&W. But I must say the first 3 you posted are excellent, could easily be in the Highlands of New Guinea near a remote river....

Started a new job on Monday, and this is what I get to see, from 55 floors up in the city. Taken from the roof at 195m above the street.

Big fan of the first two of the shots from the Brisbane River. Very nice post processing too :) Love the first city shot too. The fact that you got stars in there too just adds to it. It is scary how lit up the cities are..
Out of my mind, be back eventually.

And I already have a buyer for a print of that,, which is nice. 8-) I find its quite exciting when doing post processing, and you have a whole bunch of shots where you test out different settings, then something just jumps out as being so right...quite by accident. My heart starts beating faster when I start thinking, "Hey, I might have a good one here", then I pay closer attention to the process...getting the chromatic aberration fixed, pulling in the highs and lows within histogram range etc., I want the end result to be as good as possible, technically and aesthetically. When the pic starts to come out, its almost like a discovery...the way that I know its good is when I look at it and it feels like a photo that someone else has taken, not me...that's when I know its worthy of making public. I'm not real confident of my technique or ability, so I don't really get the good visuals set up in the photo itself, but stumble across them in post processing and then bring it out in the print. I know what looks good when I see it, but I find it hard to come up deliberately with something good then produce it. As I mentioned in my OP, part of my philosophy is that post processing is half the task of making a good photo...

Some would say that P/P isn't photography but then this is no different to spending time in a darkroom getting the print just the way you want it. In the end it can take just as much time to get the shot the way you imagined it even on screen and take just as much paper to get the shot you want as it did in the old days, so I see no difference. Those 2 shots of the river are magic, as always being in the right place at the right time with the right gear gets you only half way.

and thing is, what people don't realise, SOOC photos are just the camera doing post production for you, but whereas if you do it yourself you have total control, the camera just takes a guess at what is the best settings to apply to the photo

not to mention, to edit or "fix up" a photo you need to understand what was fundementally wrong with the photo in the first place, which could also be due to limitations of the camera itself, therefore it takes skills and creatively to post process photos properly too
