Just received this through Steam chat:

11:31 AM - ** Your Steam account may be under attack. **
11:31 AM - ** We recently determined that different computer locations connected to your Steam account. To prove you are the correct owner please follow the Steam link below. **
11:31 AM - **: http://SteamSecurityCenter.azok.org

I can't prove to you that that's not legit, but everything about this is fake. I don't know what the page in the link actually is, but don't click it to find out.

Steam/Steam staff will never contact you through chat (unless, y'know, you're actually friends with the devs and they're saying wassup) and the URL will always be from steampowered.com

Other than just wanting to let you all know- the reason I'm posting this is because the bot is in the AtomicMPC Steam group. I got an chat invitation from Steam, saying something along the lines of "You guys are in the same Steam group, which is why we think he is trustworthy- do you want to accept the chat invitation? And if so, do you want to automagically accept all future chat invitations from this dude?"

This is the account profile: http://steamcommunit...61198033093217/

These are the various names he/she/the bot used:

Name Changed - November 19th, 2011 @ 12:35am - **
Name Changed - November 19th, 2011 @ 12:33am - ''
Name Changed - November 19th, 2011 @ 12:06am - MeoW | KiTTy
Name Changed - November 16th, 2011 @ 4:43am - [TR] TiMuR [TR]
Name Changed - November 16th, 2011 @ 4:41am - :D :D :D :D :D :D :D Amk
Name Changed - November 16th, 2011 @ 4:40am - EM | Tropical
Name Changed - November 16th, 2011 @ 4:39am - EM|Tropical
Name Changed - November 15th, 2011 @ 6:57am - Timur TR (9)
Name Changed - November 12th, 2011 @ 8:11am - Timur TR
Name Changed - November 12th, 2011 @ 8:10am - Timur ITRI

The bot popped offline right after sending the message/s. Anyway, long story short- if anybody knows Timur, contact him/her to see if his/her Steam account has been hacked. If they don't exist, or they end up definitely being a bot, then I'd advise everyone to block that user.

yeah, that is a hacked account My bro once fell for the "Give us your password and we'll give you a free game" scam, and I spent an hour chatting with the bloke who had taken his account. luckily, my brother was able to contact steam support and get the account back, but the guy who'd take the account completely change the profile, the name, and everything, luckily I had a record of his SteamID64. Also lucky that he didn't have a credit card. Also, anyone can join open steam community groups, and they can't be removed by the administrators. If I get a dodgy user in my group, I just make an announcement.

and they can't be removed by the administrators.

They can be removed, only if the group owner has given the officers/admins permission to do so via the group settings.

not if the group is Public, only if the group is Invite Only

The only thing I can do in my membership is promote officers, there's no way to remove members.

Except perhaps "You can't remove anyone from a public group. If you first set it private, remove members with big red x after their name and then set it back to public, that works... "

People regularly try to hack my Steam account, more so than any other of my online identities, for some reason.

Well, I guess the easiest solution is to block them personally if they chat you.

People regularly try to hack my Steam account, more so than any other of my online identities, for some reason.

Probably because it's the easiest to hack with the most value. If you hack an identity, all you get is the identity- you still have to do more work if you want to get something valuable. Email and bank accounts are always going to be too secure, so Steam is the way to go. You can literally scope a target out first by seeing their collection of Steam title on their profile. Then when you hack it you have the value of all these games to enjoy.

Makes your profile accessible by friends-only. I think I set mine up so you need to be a member of Steam and a friend of mine to access any information By default you can see all your games, friends, and comments on the internet. My mate who has over 600 games used to get targeted a lot, until he took my advice and made his profile private. Now the only people that can access that kind of information, without hacking, are his mates I just searched my account then using Chrome, and my account is not accessible :-) Just and extra level of protection

I had the same thought :p

Pretty good advice though nobody, especially if you've got a big collection.

Mine was set to public, would explain why I had so many people adding me and asking me to trade TF2 items with them, my inventory was set to public too.

I guess it comes down to convenience vs security. My tendency is to usually leave things public as it makes things easier to access. If I'm using a browser instead of Steam, or I'm on someone else's computer I can still see my profile. I don't need to be logged in. Also, take Gmail's 2-step verification process for example. While it's a great feature and awesome for people who need it, for me it's just a burden. I sign up to services with my Google account all the time, or attach my Google account to another service frequently. The only thing I have set to private is Facebook. Even with Google+ I find that the 'professional'/'clean' attitude surrounding it helps me keep it less personal. Plus (no pun), everyone who jumps onto Google+ now has several years worth of experience in what-to-do/what-not-to-do from Facebook.

I had my profile set to private ever since I set it up, so less hassles. @smadge1, yeah you're right regarding public groups, didn't click till now. I reckon Valve should provide a perm block feature for the groups as well.
