Hi all, I was given a Gigabyte P35-DS3P board just tday and thinking of building a secondary pc which will be used for some casual LAN gaming, web-surfing and microsoft office stuff. Havent really tried testing if its working or not, but Im pretty sure it does. Unfortunately, theres no drivers CD, but I can get that from gigabyte's web. Ive got a spare case that I can use for this build and wish to spend around $3 - 400. Will it be worthwhile using 775 since Ive got a free mobo? Cheers, CoHmS.

Yes if you can get a cheap second hand LGA 775 Quad Core CPU and some cheap DDR2 RAM.
Check
http://www.gigabyte....p.aspx?pid=2639
for compatible CPUs.
Even a Core2 Duo should be ok for that stuff, depending on the game syou are wanting to play.
Driver wise get the latest P35 drivers from Intel for the chipset.

if you cant find that stuff cheap you may be better of just buying new at the very least here is some new prices to give you some idea of what you should pay secondhand g620 $65 or i3 2100 $117 (bf3 capable) Asrock H61M-S $39 4g ddr3 $16 6770 1g $99 netplus 6870 1g $169 6950 2g $249 antec hcg 520 $79 msy imo look for a secondhand gtx480 under $200 i just sold one to a mate for $150 and if overcloked a bit its faster than a gtx580

Thanks for reply guys. Actually the board had 2 pieces of A.DATA DDR2 RAM attached. Not sure how many gb's, as it doesnt say on the RAM. As for what games Ill play on it would be some classic LAN games like CnC, CS, Halo, Quake 3 etc. Nothing new. Am still looking for a gtx480 for my primary PC too, so leave a comment if you're interested in selling yours. ;)

Thanks for the reference Dasa, but this build is still in its planning stage. I still have few factors to consider besides finance. Im still focused in getting a reasonable Nvidia graphics card for my main PC, like the gtx2xx or gtx4xx series 2nd hand.

Hi guys, so Ive revised my plan and thought of using the GA-P35-DS3P board with a Core 2 Quad Q9450 (or something similar), gtx560 oc and 4GB RAM. Id put a decent cooler on the cpu and overclock it and get an SSD drive. This will be my main pc, which would be mostly for gaming (including latest titles). What do you guys think?

Did you figure out how much RAM there was? In any case, considering the high heat output and the extra cost of the good cooler combined with the age and features of the board (no USB3 or SATA3) and you've still got to pay for the CPU... I'd just go with a new M/B like the AsRock Z68 Extreme 3 Gen3 ($125@MSY) and i5 2500K ($215@MSY). That'll cost you $340, be new with full warranty, beat the pants off of the Q9450, use far less power & create far less heat, and allow your SSD to be fully exploited. You're probably only saving ~$200 if you buy a Core 2 & a decent cooler for it. Not worth the saving IMO. *EDIT* Looking at the prices of the Q9450 on eBay you'll probably be spending closer to $200 on the Q9450 + decent cooler. So it's an under $150 saving. Definitely go for the 2500k.

Yeah, 2Ggigs 800HMz RAM DDR2. The i5 combo was definitely thought of but, I think its not the right time to buy these cause theres a lot of new stuff coming. I also prefer to have an ATX board for my main pc and never knew that the Core 2 Quad series create so much heat. For now, Im getting an OCZ Agility 3 120GB SSD. Thanks for your opinion.

er.......it's a very ancient board - PCI-E 1.0, and we're up to PCI-E 3.0 now imho, if you're going to spend that much, get something new or at least newer than that look thru the 2nd hand sections here and wherever else you go (like OCAU) - for instance I've sold 2x late/current model boards, a Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3P-B3. and an Asrock Z68-Pro3-Gen3 in the last few weeks, and neither went for more than $80. just sold a brand new Gigabyte factory overclocked HD6870 for $170 don't spend your hard-earned on obsolete rubbish ;)

So you're going to spend money on an even older setup instead. I'm not a fan of that logic. The mainboard I suggested is ATX, so I'm not sure why you brought that up. The OCZ Agility 3 is SATA3 and supports speeds past 500MB/s. The P35-DSP3 has only SATA2 so your OCZ Agility 3 will run under 300MB/s (this review measured it at 282 MB/s read and 266 MB/s write when connected to SATA2 versus 546 MB/s read and 520 MB/s write connected to SATA3).

*EDIT* This is going from memory and could potentially be wildly inaccurate, but my general understand is the 2500K/Z68 will draw about 50W less than the Q9450/P35 while under load and about 80W less when idle.

umm, I think there has been a misunderstanding here. I was getting the SSD for my main PC : i3-2100, gtx560, 4gb ram from the "bottleneck anywhere?" thread. Im ditching the p35-ds3p. Regarding the ATX board, I was just stating that I prefer ATX board for my main pc and I do know the Asrock board is ATX. Also, I do not have access to trademart here yet, so I cant really see whats up for sale.

Hey guys,

Its the 2nd time revising this build, but now Im determined to complete this as a project, as Im going to do some modding too. But before getting excited about it, Id like to know if the P35-DS3P motherboard will still work : Posted Image
Apparently, theres thermal paste/grease in the pins socket. Will this affect the CPU?

To remove anything on computer parts I use co-contact cleaner its hydrocarbon and will remove any deposits including thermal paste with causing any harm to your parts.

If you go to the CRC site and click on distributors it will list the places you can buy it, I know for sure that Blackwoods stock it.

So Ive just came back from my local Repco store to get some contact cleaner but they've ran out of CRC's co-contact cleaner, so I bought their Repco brand contact cleaner instead. Will this suffice?
