Looks like AMD is prepping 3 cards released by November R9 370x, 380x, and 390x, with 256, 384, and 512 bit bus. Appears they will be on 20nm too. Going to be exciting show down soon:

I wouldn't count on WCCTech on a source since they mostly take a guess from a random site to create news. In any case, I'd probably say that the bus won't be any bigger than 384bit given the size and scale for a 512bit bus. Plus we remember how the Radeon HD 2900 went... >>

r9-290 4g are 512bit so they may stick with it or they may swap to 384bit 6g
but yeah id be surprised if we see high end 20nm cards this year nvidia is releasing maxwell soon at the current nm as there is apparently problems with 20nm

In the mean time it looks like the R9 280 will be replaced with the R9 285, which uses newer silicon based on a chip called Tonga. Performance is rumoured to be around the same, while using less power. The newer chip also means Free-sync and True Audio. This information was released over the weekend as part of AMD's 30 years of gaming and graphics, which can be found here

Very much looking forward to seeing how this cards goes, as it could mean an R9 285 or (rumoured) R9 285X could be making its way into my PC soon :-)

I don't think they'll need to release anything until nVidia put out a GTX990. From what I can see, the 980 sits about the same place on the charts as a 290 (non-X)

Ummm what you smokin lol.....   Unless cpu limited, your probably looking at 25% increase over the 290 and around 20% over the 290x @ 1080.... but the gap narrows with higher res.  But at the same time, 290x and 980 are priced nearly the same so they need to make $$ adjustments and Maxwell is sippin power...

290 vs 980 @1080

From Toms:

BF4= 25 more fps

Thief= 18+

Watch dogs= 21+

Techpoweredup:

BF4= 21 more fps

Thief= 23+

Watch dogs= 20+

Aren't we at the point where comparing stats at 1080p is about as useful as comparing them at 1024x768?

yea your probably right, shifting to the higher res but 1080 still dominates the market.  Those looking at these cards probably run higher res

BF4 - http://www.overclock...axwell_review/9

Watch Dogs - http://www.overclock...xwell_review/20

TTL didn't run Thief, so here's Fire Strike Extreme - http://www.overclock...axwell_review/7

I look at the 1440p results these days. The results aren't too far apart. The main difference between the two is the power draw.

I have a bit of hate for both red and green teams lately. ATI/AMD have always had shit GPU drivers, and nVidia released the 32*.** series drivers that COOKED my old 580. That was a pretty common problem, it was all over the geforce forums. I would have kept the 580 for a while longer if they hadn't done that to me.

I have no doubt the gap will widen still as drivers become more optimised, but for the time being, there is really dick all difference between them other than power draw and 6-12 fps at resolutions that still stress the card.

Edit - I should stress that I am comparing the 980 to MY 290. Mine is an extremely good overclocker, and I matched TTL's MSI R9 290 Gaming OC clocks (as can pretty much any of the MSI 290's. I also have the 2nd BIOS flashed to a 290X). Bog standard 290's I can cede the difference.

yea your right, should look at higher res, price and power draw.  The price just seems right and being overclockable but if you have any higher end card might be worth waiting for sure.

its interesting to see oc models reviewd

most reviews show the gtx980 beating the 780ti and gtx970 being competitive with 290x but that one from oc3d doesnt show that so consistently

they dont go into much detail about settings used but somehow they are getting ~18fps in metro ll at 2560 while others are getting 50-60 other tests do seem to mirror other sites results though

the other impressive thing about 980\970 is there ability to hit 1500mhz

They usually mean max when they say that. Everything set to maximum settings - AF, AA, etc

Hehe, yup if you're aiming at just 1080p, this isn't really the grade of card you actually need. GTX960 or R9 285(X) would be more that segment.

1600p would be minimum, and 4k or multimonitor resolutions are where these guys need to stretch their legs.
