Interesting. The fact that ipad doesn't support flash is one of the things I like about it. Flash is the scourge of the net in my opinion and is disabled on my laptop as well. Im one of those persons using iPad almost exclusively and now that ms office apps are available for iOS, the laptop rarely gets used at all..... and the only reason I use ms is because it's standard at work. Give me Pages over Word any day. I'm not a huge gamer, don't do a lot of web browsing and I find cloud storage leagues more convenient than usb storage. It's brilliant in a business environment and still manages a staggering battery life. It collects mail for any type of service, even those that Outlook refuses to sync with. Don't care much for torrents, but I know people who use iPad for this, so it's obviously possible.

I stopped short of saying the iPad is the better device before, but what the heck .... iPad is the better device, lol.

Although, if you're comparing modern android devices with a 2nd gen iPad, that's hardly a fair comparison. My old 2 is relegated to my sisters 4yo, to feed her Dora and Frozen app habit and I wouldn't even attempt to run ios8 on it.

Seems to me you may be a little out of touch with iOS. Mine happily connects to NAS, any PC, any wireless connection and HDMI without argument. I'm also an artist and use iPad and a good stylus for this task. I've created house plans and designed a proposed extension. I use it for VoIP, using an app that supports headsets. Siri works better than any dedicated GPS I've tried. Siri also reads out my mail, responds to messages, reads me stories, reminds me of my schedule, does my web browsing for me and tells me when it's going to rain ! There's nothing iPad can't do, that I need it to do.

The last time I boot my laptop was during a nostalgic moment, with the intention of loading up an old, old, old game on cd ..... only to discover the battery was flat and power pack not working. A quick browse in the App Store and I found an iOS port of the same game available for purchase ! Win :)

connecting to a NAS isnt the problem, acting as a NAS when it has the movie files on the device already, was.

I couldnt map the ipad to a network share. a HUGE limitation (for me). but really i was probably doing it wrong.

Though it is on iOS8 i think..... whatever the latest apple allows an ipad2 to go to.

Without Flash, all my oldschool flash games wont run. a bunch of streaming game video sites wont either. theres a lot that isnt HTML5 compatible still. an awful lot. Especially when you browse websites that only get probably 10 hits or so a month.

All your chan flash archives, and japanese content is still heavily flash based. Interactive stories, (dare i say?) porn; it all relies on flash player still.

I stopped short of saying the iPad is the better device before, but what the heck .... iPad is the better device, lol.

For you ;)

a couple of features I (believe) they're still missing. (yes ive used an air and what not, i was in the apple store today getting training on them, ironically).

I dont thinjk they can multi-window\split screen. And I think they still dont get a mouse pointer if you connect a bluetooth mouse.

To me, both huge.

To others, quite possibly a non-event.

My $175 Android tablet still benchmarks faster than ipads, and renders 3D when doing CAD work stupidly faster.

Personally, I'd argue the best tablet device is any decent ARM tablet with an unlocked boot loader.

Any OS you like. BSD, Unix, Linux, Android, Meego, Firefox. and the list goes on.

I also can't open it up easily in a couple of years when the battery gets worn. My electronics have a 5-6 year minimum upkeep.

My last laptop was purchased in 2006 (Athlon64), its getting close to upgrade time. But it's had 3 batteries in its life. Still going strong with 0 lag.

Once again, not many will agree, but the sort of cost any of the major players are asking at the moment, personally makes me expect a significant lifespan.

So far all my tech has held up to my expectations :)

Though, I did get an extended session today using FIREFOX OS, which is coming in a close second for me...... very impressive.

Annoyingly, meego has very little traction in english countries (it's what came of Symbian). It's probably the nicest fastest OS i've ever used, just, with very few english apps, its rather useless besides web browsing and the like..... sad really.

Please keep in mind, the genuine praise area's I do give the ipad. If 'pick up and go' is your thing, well the ipad is ready to rock! (plus my love of using one at work! None of that was sarcasm)

But I'm on Atomic, not whirlpool, so modding is where it's at :)

But, if it comes down to 'which ipad do i buy?' After having some sales training at the apple store today; it all came down to: the biggest possible size (storage) of the one you like holding most.

Apple will allow you to upgrade your 2 to ios8, but don't go there if you wish to maintain your sanity. I upgraded my 2 and backed out immediately because it ran like a dog. V7.12 runs perfectly on the 2.

Yeah, see ... mouse pointers and split screens are a non issue for me. Besides, the screen is small enough already, don't want to split the real estate any further. Have to admit I've never compared 3D CAD performance with an android device before. It's not the sort of software generally installed on retail display offering. But I only do it for fun, so it doesn't really matter.

Definitely agree on data storage. I've always gone for the largest possible capacity, with absolutely no regrets. So worth the extra dollars.

Many people have mentioned the issue of using Apple hardware with an os of choice, but I think it would be sacrificing reliability instead. Apple device " just work" because the software is well tuned to a specific hardware. I know some people love the challenge of debugging software and hardware conflicts in new builds, but quite frankly, I'm over that. I just want to pick up a device and have it work flawlessly every time. I've grown lazy ... :)

If I was told no modding, use it as you buy it, the only one I think I'd have full use for would be a Surface Pro.

Different strokes for different folks. As I said, I knew I was playing devils advocate suggesting 'others'. My only reason was because a young dude asked 'which was best' and I was concerned he'd only used one device.

It sparked a good discussion, so I'm glad I did it :)

I only ask because Ipads are usually only useful in a business environment, otherwise the end up being toys.

android tabs, and even surfaces are real 'geek tools'  no matter what, and are also useful in a business environment.

It's statements like this that pretty much mean I can never take you seriously anymore Master_Scythe.

Lol, really? So things like different workplace use of technology are one of the reasons you can never take me seriously?  Pretty judgemental, and deliberately inflammatory statement to make; but your'e welcome to make it.

No, your broad brush narrow POV statements, like the one quoted at the top of this quote tree, are why I can't take you seriously.

Of course I judge people on what they type. Kind of hard not to considering it's a forum and that's how we communicate here. As for inflammatory, I have absolutely no power in your feelings about being called out on something I firmly disagree with.

I deleted the rest of this post. We have done this dance before Master_Scythe and nothing the last time suggested you could, or would, for one moment consider another point of view.

If you want to have a one sided argument perhaps start another thread rather than confuse the OP further and let his question be answered.

Sorry for having a broad point of view. I find stating it leads to discussions on a topic. Also, people don't have 9 days to read a book on the intricate feelings of a topic when others speak.

Make the statement, if someone disagrees, discuss. Pretty simple stuff really.

Of course I judge people on what they type. Kind of hard not to considering it's a forum and that's how we communicate here. As for inflammatory, I have absolutely no power in your feelings about being called out on something I firmly disagree with.

Makes sense, I just feel it rude to go out of your way to tell someone "I think less of you", but some people are just jerks like that.

The rest of what you wrote absolutely changes my opinion not one iota although your employment of the fanboi moniker pretty much cemented my opinion of where you are coming from generally.

Yep, I want people to consider every option, even though this is the apple section. Hence why I called your fanboi-ism out.

You want a tablet to be a PC. That's fine for you.

Absolutely correct. To be more specific, I want my hardware unlocked.

A strong ARM chip with good power management is a great tool, I dislike when things feel crippled.

As someone who professes to believe in an "each to their own" philosophy I would have thought that you would easily accept and concede that not everyone requires "NAS functionality".

I never suggested they did.

We're discussing personal use cases, and I quite obviously pointed out why I need it (so people understood my 'why', in case they didn't share it).

I'm glad you "would have thought that" because..... I do...... so.... good job!

Nothing in the wall of text you wrote even remotely suggests you have at all taken into consideration the OP's question.

So, all the pro's and awesome things about iPads that I wrote, where I find them an absolute godsend, don't take into consideration "which iPad should I buy?"..... ok...... umm..... not sure what I SHOULD have written then.

It's all about you.

What? the part where we begin discussing individual use cases, and our personal experience in the workplace? yes. yes it is.

lol, can you imagine if it wasn't? "My personal opinion is, I'll let the tick tell me what it is... hold on"

It feels that on any given opportunity you rant about the perceived inefficiencies of a given platform but until you can actually open your eyes and see what the other half are actually doing with these things and can appreciate a differing perspective then I really can't take you seriously. Is that a better explanation?

No, because you're too closed minded to accept that the fringe users, are also users. So their perspective is just as valid.

You don't think the exhange NightOwl and I have had in this very thread constitutes accepting what suits someone else? Never once said it was wrong... reiterated the pro's of the platform... hmm... what SHOULD I have done, enlighten me.

I think we call get your perspective and really don't need to read again how you hate that there exists a tablet that isn't a fully functional PC again and again?

But do you? do you REALLY get it? because you're not acting like you do.

Also, I only did it because I was concerned the OP had only used an iPad. No Surface, no Android, no Blackberry. And I was right! He may still end up buying an iPad if he likes it best; but I still stand by my belief that 'buying the first thing you see' is foolish.

I helped a young kid not throw money at the first thing he see's, IMO, a good lesson.

Good job in turning someone's question about which iPad to get into your own love fest thread though. Kudos on that.

Thank you, It's an art.

Was going smoothly while we were calmly comparing usage cases, shame someone broke it.

Maybe start your own thread in the Apple section about "Why I believe the iPad is shit for everyone cause it's not the surface 3"?

No, I may be guilty of the occasional troll post, but I'm not as bad as you.

I'm not going to suggest that my fringe use of a device is best for everyone; but on that note is is going to also be best for some.

No, you don't speak as having a broad point of view. You made a statement which is unfathomably incorrect and paint people with a large brush. You did it. Right there. At the top of the quote tree. iPads are really good in business or are toys. It doesn't even make sense. It's wrong. Period. I called you on it and you didn't like it. Everything else you wrote never even addressed this. You attacked me because you felt attacked.

Look I know you aren't going to get it and really, in regards to poor form, you are the only one in here calling people names like troll and fanboi, both assumptions are completely and totally incorrect BTW.

If you want a discussion don't resort to name calling. So far all you have done is just prove my point that I can't take you seriously.

You made a statement which is unfathomably incorrect

That is literally impossible in a topic like this.

No matter how much you cry about my experiences, that's them. Don't like them? Come back when you have a time machine.

Wanna share yours? great! just dont think that your personal experiences somehow 'undo' others. God complex much?

iPads are really good in business or are toys. It doesn't even make sense. It's wrong. Period.

I love how you omit the key word there; 'usually'.

That's my usual experience. Not an exclusive one; but you can continue to read and assume what you like; there's obviously no reasoning with you.

These things would go well prefacing your statements.

Fair point,

To clarify then,

I am not an official representative for apple, anything stated by me is therefore an opinion or a personal experience.

Sorry if I put forward the illusion of being able to speak for the IT industry or Apple as a whole, it was never the intention; i tried to show that by using 'usually' instead of 'exclusively', as in, "my usual experience"; it clearly wasn't implies strongly enough.

I actually made a green room thread stating that all my posts unless prefaced by a source should be considered opinion, but that was months ago so I can forgive a slip of the mind.

Anyway, carry on, glad that's sorted.

Sorry to have misled.

I'd appreciate that.

You need to stop assuming things, there was no sarcasm. Please, ask the question, don't just assume the worst of people.

I genuinely didn't mean to mislead you into thinking my statements were somehow anything other than my experience.

I don't work in a market research company and didnt mean to suggest I can find, even if i wanted to, the statistics for majority vs minority use cases.
