Actually Excel 2007 and later actually has GPU code in it, some types of calculations can be GPU accelerated.

It's fair to say... you can now buy an AMD rig again without feeling too much like a donkey or harbouring any shame for long periods.

RIG: Phenom II X2 550 @ 4.0GHz | MSI 990FXA GD-80 | 8GB Corsair Vengeance @ 1600MHz 9-9-9-24 | Radeon HD6450 | Patriot Pyro SSD 120GB SATAIII | 500GB + 1TB Barracuda's | LG GH22NS70 DVD-RW | Xigmatek Red Scorpion | Corsair HX650W | CM690

Umm... what do you mean soon? :D

Also... it seems that Threadripper is causing quite the stir. Lots of online techsperts are talking about AMD perhaps having caught Intel with their pants down... as Intel is rushing Kaby Lake X to market to match AMD's purported Thread (Can I just call it TR?)

Here's a rant by someone more in the know than I. Contains language if that's your thing.

Your average joe couldn't afford threadripper, the motherboard price I imagine isn't going be cheap.

No... but it seems like Intel have boned themselves out of the enthusiast market as well with their recent product plans.

Yeah.. now is a critical juncture not to bone themselves... again. That being said, the Ryzen/AM4 run up and launch seems to have gone well compared to Bulldozer launch. Although there is talk that motherboard manufacturers weren't too happy with the timeline, and is why we keep seeing new BIOS revisions improving functionality and performance I guess. But the pricing is high enough to keep it's run out pretty smooth. Not to mention everything in the lineup is the top end chip that just descends in grade and gets cores shut down, so it's a good way to keep it crankin along.

So what's there to say for TR?

  • Well basically it seems to be a server part to drop right on at the top of the desktop lineup, so not too hard for AMD to implement.
  • The pricing will likely make it limited enough to cherry pick at a top bin level.
  • The silicon seems to be yielding well with Ryzen so it may hold up for what I am assuming is two fused Ryzen's with extra lanes and pins.

That's my perspective, but as all can attest, I've been wrong before.
