Windows 10 is a platform really, because it includes phone, tablet and desktop OSes. Windows 7 was always a desktop only os. Windows 8.1 was the beginnings of product integration.

It's not about making money. It's about saving money.  By offering Windows 10 for free they hope to entice a very significant portion of their user base to this platform (as Jeruselem points out it is!).  What that means is signficantly reduced teams patching numerous versions of operating systems, a problem Apple does not have (as far as I read.  Never used a Mac, so can't comment first hand).

And yes, everything from here on out will be continuous platform updates and incremental purchases (microtransactions even!).  It's the cloud way :p

On the developer side, Windows 10 and it's core will provide a unified developer framework across platforms, something that .NET has been trying to achieve since the Windows Phone 7 days (fuck you WP7 you broke my heart).

fredzfrog is right on the money.

I think they are pushing an Ecosystem, manage your Photos and Gaming and  Cloud HD storage and Movies and Ebooks and Windows Store  and etc etc cant remember all the stuff I told windows not to activate during my "free" (as in free beer) upgrade last night,  and which I hunted down and removed from my system today, as many as MS would let me, some are dormant, cant be got rid of just yet.

Prolly an APPLE inspired (i)mind set.

No different from a Apple eco system or a Google ecosystem!

I am not Judging them for it, they are a comercial operation, like the others you mention.

I am really not into it (the cloud based digital lifestyle), and at this time its not compulsory to engage in it, and trivial to remove most of it.

Though if one chooses the express config for apps, all of its many currently available products are installed/activated, and there (is a lot of bloat) are a lot of Apps.

I assume if you select the upgrade via the popup in Win7 that you get no choice but to replace your active OS, no option to have Win10 placed on a different partition and do multiboot?

Its an inplace upgrade. You'll need the ISO for a proper install on another partition.
The iso for build 10240 rtm only takes windows 10 keys, the iso for build 10586 lets you enter windows 7 and 8 keys. Microsoft stopped making public the 10586 iso a few days ago.

Microsoft stopped making public the 10586 iso a few days ago.

And then started again shortly after.
