i have a dell laptop given to me and it has issues it wont load windows. i dont have the install disk i have mad a boot disk and a repair disk from another win 7 laptop i have and neither can repair or recover the system.

On the way through the process it dose say the partition cant be found and the ionly way to make any way forward is with an oem disk.

I only have backup disks for my usual laptop and they wont work on the broken one.

Can i download an OEM program from Microsoft with the product key that is already on the back of the broken laptop

Only works for non OEM licence keys.

If you enter an OEM key it tells you to contact your computer manufacturer.

Surely if you edit ei.cfg to make it a universal disk, you can use any Win7 disc/image?

You can aquire the correct Windows ISO from your favourite uncle and use the legit key.

I have has this issue a few times and managed to get around it, can't remember the details now but I do see the odd laptop with the sticker worn off.  I suspect it might simply go telephone activation for windows.

Or grab the key from the lappy HDD using magic jelly bean keyfinder?

Unfortunately this will often be a volume key, not the same as the OEM key on the bottom of the notebook. This key generally won't be accepted when using OEM media to install.
