looks like it has higher idle and average power use than i would like but it stops there and doesnt go any higher

https://www.techpowe.../RX_480/22.html

Overclocking_01.png

there is a few games where it shines amongst the many where it fails it kinda reminds me of the 285 in this way as it was another cut down card with tweaked shaders from memory

its a little concerning that there is reports of overclocks lower than this adding ~100w to the power use

http://www.techspot....-480/page7.html

it will be interesting to see what custom cooled cards can do and if they can drop power use through lower temps or if there power use will be through the roof due to higher oc

Almost equal to a 980, and under US$200?  I wouldn't call that underwhelming.

By the time nVidia get their shit to that pricepoint, AMD stuff should be flying.

For the price of the RX 480 4gb model, I would be up $20 from selling my 970.... Basically, I would get a 20 bucks for getting a new card.  For an extra 20 out of my pocket, I can get 8gb while still having 5% performance boost in general for 1080p on either version...  But, I wont buy one since the reference cooler is crap and will wait for the extra pwr and coolers from 3rd party.

To me, being able to sell the old card and get a new one at near break even, is amazing.  The RX 480 is really the only card you could recommend at this price point, unless they drop the prices on all other older cards or to near the 480 price levels.  Even if you could get a 970 at 200, that would still be a 3.5g card with less performance but the 970 is still selling higher than the 8gb 480.

Tom's Hardware isn't happy with the PCIe slot power consumption; it's pulling more power than the spec allows (75W)

I did not know that. Thank you Dasa :-)

Would be interesting if we could easily tell what the max per motherboard is then

On the power issue for the 480:

For those who can't be bothered watching (you really should): It was at 4K, where the card is getting under 10fps, so nobody in their right mind would do that for long; and there have been quite a few other cards (including many overclocked cards) in the past that have done much much more egregious things, yet nobody's mobo has died because of it.

seems amd isnt the only one with problems

NVIDIA GTX 1080 Founders Edition Owners Complain of Fan Revving Issues
VIDIA's decision to sell its reference-design GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card at a $100 premium over the SKU's MSRP of $599, is beginning develop cracks, with early adopters complaining of erratic default fan behavior. The GTX 1080 Founders Edition graphics card features NVIDIA's reference lateral-blower-type cooler, which didn't exactly blow us away, in our review of the card. Customers across the forumscape, including on NVIDIA's own GeForce Forums, are complaining of an issue where the fan of the cooler has a mind of its own, and revs up from 2,000 RPM to 3,000 RPM intermittently, and drops back to its idle speed. This, users complain, is particularly annoying if you're not gaming.

The users observe that these sudden and unpredictable spikes in fan-speed are not in response to rising GPU temperatures or clock speeds. Sudden variations in fan-speed are worse than gradual variations in response to legitimate triggers, as it also means sudden changes in noise, which is distracting. Users also observe that you can't even use third-party software (eg: EVGA Precision) to stabilize or override the fan-behavior, as the speed-spikes don't respect custom settings.

GeForce GTX "Pascal" Faces High DVI Pixel Clock Booting Problems
The second design flaw to hit the GeForce GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 after the fan revving bug, isn't confined to the reference "Founders Edition" cards, but affects all GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 cards. Users of monitors with dual-link DVI connectors are noticing problems in booting to Windows with pixel clocks set higher than 330 MHz. You can boot to windows at default pixel clocks, and when booted, set the refresh-rates (and conversely pixel clocks) higher than 330 MHz, and the display works fine, it's just that you can't boot with those settings, and will have to revert to default settings each time you shut down or restart your machine.

A user of a custom-design GTX 1070 notes that if the refresh rate of their 1440p monitor is set higher than 81 Hz (the highest refresh rate you can achieve with pixel clock staying under 330 MHz) and the resolution at 2560 x 1440, the machine doesn't correctly boot into Windows. The splash screen is replaced with flash color screens, and nothing beyond. The system BIOS screen appears correctly (because it runs at low resolutions). The problem is also said to be observed on a custom-design GTX 1080, and has been replicated by other users on the GeForce Forums.

Nvidia GTX 1080 and 1070 Display Ports don't work with HTC Vive
In another tale of hardware not quite working as expected, there are reports that the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 and 1070 Display Port doesn't work with the HTC Vive virtual reality headset. Nvidia markets both the GTX 1080 and 1070 as offering "innovative new gaming technologies and breakthrough VR experiences," so to have this compatibility problem exist, with the best selling PC HMD, seems like a bit of a blunder.

The GeForce GTX 1060 will sport 1280 CUDA cores with a GPU Boost clock speed rated at 1.7 GHz. Though the card will be available in only 6GB varieties, the reference / Founders Edition will ship with 6GB of GDDR5 memory running at 8.0 GHz / 8 Gbps. With 1280 CUDA cores, the GP106 GPU is essentially one half of a GP104 in terms of compute capability. NVIDIA decided not to cut the memory interface in half though, instead going with a 192-bit design compared to the GP104 and its 256-bit option.

Nearly bought the 1070 today but I could not really use that much of a card with my res and the price is still higher than it should.  If price were where it should be then I would have got one... Then I was like I'll get the reference 480 with 4gb to try the flash lottery and get 4gb for free, but there's no stock or super expensive.  The 480 is a side grade really for the fun...  The 1060 seems like the right in between (so far) but the release date feels so far out, FE prices and availability when 1st released might be hard to get one.

Basically I should have kept my card and waited even if I got a crap price for my is used later on

bit bigger than the r9 nano looks more like the gtx970 mini

15.5 cm x 11.0 cm nano

17 cm x 12.19 cm mini

but then i havent really seen any cases small enough to make good use of ether most of the smallest cases still have room for long gpu

looks like reference rx 480 is capable of ~1.5ghz on water

https://youtu.be/Jq47qmwcus8

so while non reference models should oc well it does seem the gpu has a bit of leakage at higher v increasing power use significantly

rx 480 non reference have started popping up with huge pcb and hsf suggesting there power use will be a bit higher

so far they seem to be going with a single 8 pin pci-e

Do you think AMD will have better dx12 and vulkan performance vs Nvidia?  Sticking it out till the 1060 release and some custom 480,  but wondering if the 480 would be more future proof and 1060 for better dx11 with fair dx12 / vulkan?
