The 480 definitely has more room for improvement than the nVidia offering!

What sways me to the red team are: Vulkan is OS agnostic, dx12 is Windows; Freesynch is simpler and cheaper to implement than the nVidia thing; and WattMan looks to be a very comprehensive package compared to nVidia's offering.

Being considerably cheaper definitely doesn't hurt, either! Game hardware changes so fast and gets swapped out so often than cost is a significant factor. Admittedly, then 10?0 cards are quite a bit more capable in hard numbers, but AMD's offerings appear more than capable of handling the current and immediately upcoming crop for a LOT less.

Assuming they fix it's teething troubles.

gtx1060 6g is out $430-500 with reference gtx980 performance

~5-6w idle ~120w gaming

seems to be very limited stock

shame there is still no non reference rx 480 reviews for comparison

So I gave myself a hard date of the "19th" that I would buy a new card as Im without one (kids remember to keep what you got until you get something new!).... Wanted the custom 480 but even reference is limited and have not seen any yet beside pics... Plus, red team might have some better dx12/vulcan performance.  Then, I went to buy the gtx 1060 since they came out with custom version day one and many were sold out even though I was trying here and there throughout the day.  The ones I was seeing were high, as the msrp priced ones went quick.

I was able to find the most generic looking and the cheapest Ive seen of a 1070 for $389US, as the cooler looks not any better than the FE version, Asus Turbo GTX 1070.  I bought it since some of the 1060 were $300US and figured even if it dont OC it seemed like a good buy.  I dont even know the vrm or phase it has yet.  I just hope it is not too loud...

nice it wasnt available when i grabbed a evga 1070 ~$590au + post

international warranty thats transferable on sale has to be worth something though if i decide to replace it in 6 months

mine will go on water right away with any luck

i doubt its vrm will be any less than reference and all cards seem to hit ~2000mhz limit regardless of vrm

although due to a single 8 pin connector and 150w tdp limit on the cards our average boost clock may spend a bit more time below the max than one with two power connectors

the up side is the reference cards seem to use a fair bit less power than the likes of the msi for the tiny bit of higher average boost speed

Thx for the link.  It's been awhile since I've been this excited about new hardware and would have been just as excited for the 480 if I went that route.  New card from both camps seems great.  Might look into a universal block if this blower is loud, I like how I can control a 4 pin fan off the GPU though.   Probably do the side fan

Edit:  Looks like the turbo doesnt have the extra pwm... just the upper models...

nice feature it would be great for a fan over vrm with a universal block if it was controlled by gpu\vrm temp

my fan works fairly well using speed fan of gpu temp these days just have to make sure i dont swap displays to igp for some reason when the igp takes over the temp probe on the gpu stops working in speed fan till the program is restarted

evga was advertising they were using low wattage fans to increase performance as they counted towards the cards total tdp limit with gtx970\980 cards restricting boost clocks

im guessing asus has increased the tdp or separated the fans with there vrm on the 1070

Did a few quick tests, below is stacked or basically I added to from stock tiered down to test the core clock reactions:

Stock / Fan Curve 25-75%

1785-1810mhz

Power Limit 112% / Core Voltage +100

1835-1848mhz

Core Clock +100

1936 - 1974mhz

Core Clock +150

~2025mhz

Core Clock +175

~2050mhz

3dmark11:  26479 +150c / +500m (cpu @ 4.7 or 4.9 cant remember but can check later)

Time Spy:  6037 +185c / +400 (cpu @ 4.9ghz)

Firestrike:  http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/13617692  +150c / +500m (cpu @4.7)

When benching the above doesnt stay flat lined and was trying different setting while writing them down.  When running bf4 the clock at +150 stays at a near constant at 2025mhz... But that depends on the level.   Sometimes with say +150c in bf4 its at 2025 then others its kinda goes up or down even if I move it up to +200.  The core tops out at around 2076mhz it seems, but cant keep it there, it throttles down.  The memory is crazy though, so far I have not tried over +500 or what Afterburner shows 4498.  I like to use 3dmark11 for the memory tests and so far no snow in the water :)  The thing holding the core is the power limit it seems.  If I flashed to a bios that had a limit of 125% I think the core would flatten more. The vcore is another thing that isnt holding steady but it again seems like the power limit holding the vcore down since it hits that and throttles.

The blower is loud and can be heard over my fans after 55%.  I like to run it up to 75% to keep temps at 70c or lower when gaming with bf4 for example.  Really though when gaming with headphones it not a huge issue, plus the case sits to the left of me which helps.  Need to do some more gaming tests but it not even showing any problems with bf4 with vsync its constantly at 144 fps.  It just crazy how fast this thing is though for the price.  Looking at the benchmarks, the Firestrike score is nearly as high as when I had sli Titans (Graphics score 23281 vs 20439)

Ill be doing more test but wanted to give quick impression of the card.

Looks like you will get yours soon :)  Im betting yours will run quite cool out of the box compared to my blower fan.

All in all Im extremely happy with this card so far.  Even at all stock it runs around 1800mhz.  If I keep the fan at stock it gets up to around 79c but is quiet.  I can turn the side case fan up, but then it nearly the same difference as just turning the blower up.   I cannot hear any coil whine under full load.

I guess the biggest con is that the core clock seems to be limited by the power limit.  If it was set to 120-130%, it would open the card up more.  I might check for an bios editor.

there was talk of people flashing a asus bios to any 1070 cards that lifted the power limits

can you tell from the back of your pcb how many vrm you have?

this one has 4+1 phase rated for 150w max

the sc still has 4+1 but is rated for 170w

the ftw has 8+8 pin pci-e 10+2 phases & a 215w limit

but there still limited to 112% powertune so im not sure exactly how that works yet

considering it wasnt much extra maybe i should have spent the extra but maybe it would have just used more power and not overclocked any better

seems the ftw also has dual bios

looking at reviews on newegg the evga cards do run cool n quiet on stock cooling

may swap back to the evga gpu block as although it will mess up my loop order a little with it needing its inlet on the wrong side it should provide lower temps

I'm a bit surprised that the custom 480 are not out yet. 470 seems a bit high on cost considering the 4g 480.

pccg has some custom xfx rx 480 listed ~$430 there just out of stock eta for more is the 17th

price for the 470 does seem a bit high considering rx 480 4g was $319  its just there is no stock of them

pccg has rx 470 listed at $299 but again no stock till the 18th

all new cards seem to be low on stock at the moment

I think the stock problem is just the fact that we tend to get the short stick in terms of priority. Most of the time, majority goes to the US and Asia as the gaming market is much larger there. We tend to be grouped last as our market is too small to justify sending large amounts to. The last I remember in working at a distie, we had only 1 box of the latest cards which was probably enough for 1 week before another 3 month wait.
