Hey guys.

I'll keep it short.

In about 2011 I bought a 27" ASUS monitor for about $1000.

By my standards today, its 'grey' washed out and just unpleasant.

I was looking at modern monitors and have a budget of below $300 (since i'll be buying 3).

Most fo the affordable monitors are VA panels these days, are IPS the go-to for gaming these days?

I've noticed TN are a lot faster, but with my eyes and natural blur induced (I call it built in AA :P), I need the enhanced colour, blacks, and angles. TN just wont do.

Anyone up to date with what's good?

I was tempted by the BenQ on sale at MSY at the moment, but then noticed this article

http://www.tftcentra...nq_gw2760hs.htm

and there is apparently severe ghosting.

anyone up to date with 25"+ monitors and what's good?

So my home monitor is 21" TN at the moment, I thought it was 24".

So I'd be happy with a 24\25 (bigger is better obviously).

The middle monitor will be gaming

left is Movies\TV\Twitch\etc.

Right is Monitoring (Tail, pings, IRC, etc)

I'm thinking a VA panel for the two side ones, and an IPS for the middle.

I'm no kind of monitor expert, but I can read the reviews and the "what is" pages: sounds like a Plan to me.  The tasks you specified for your side panel are not hugely affected by ghosting anyway.

My main is 24" Benq GL2450.  Supposedly it's VA.  There's reviews out there that don't list the specs properly, I would guess that it has evolved over time as mine has HDMI where some say it doesn't.
Black is represented nicely and the viewing angle is good with little change in colour perception.

My second is 22" Benq GW2265.  Much the same.  Though mine has no HDMI, there are variants that have that and other features.

Pricing seems to vary, I got my 24" 2nd-hand.  The 22" was new at a time when on special.  Looks like many are on an upward cycle ATM but the MSY part list has a 27" 6ms IPS Acer G277HL listed @ $289

I'm looking into these:

http://www.reboot-it...1200-cheap.html

$300 for 3 (plus post)

16:10 which is rare, 24" which is acceptable, and PLS, which i'm reading is IPS re-buzz-worded by samsung.

Its from 2014. No HDMI, but it does have DVI, and HDMI-DVI cables are about $5 at msy.

THen you see things like this:

http://www.officewor...nitor-in3158115

3 of those would be VERY cool. I might be able to sit further  back than 15cm from the screen. A propper 30cm or so would be very pleasant.

Wild idea, try to get an Early 2011 27" iMac. This is the latest model that can be used in Target Display Mode with normal Displayport signals (later iMacs require Thunderbolt), and contains an absolutely brilliant 27" 1440p panel.

I like it......

any idea what level of 'working' is required for this to.... work?

Is it part of the display board only?

So things like this:

http://www.ebay.com....csAAOSwHQ9WV5CS

which wont boot (faulty motherboard?) can still be forced into target? (generally speaking)

Unfortunately not, the OS needs to be up and running.

ohhh, that kills the bargain. Forget that.

Depending how that 32" one i linked above looks in person, the next likely candidate is:

Mine was a free roadside find. ;)

I don't know how much they go for used, but perhaps for the price of a new monitor, you get a really good monitor that's also a computer?

Edit: Found this: https://www.ifixit.c...xternal monitor

If you can find out the make+model of the LCD panel, you could fish up a suitable driver board and repurpose it into a monitor.

Would be an interesting project, iMacs have damn fine screens in em.

So, I went and tried the 31" monitor last night.

Its actually VERY good. But even my blurry excuses for eyes can see the pixels. (I, however, can only sit a forearm away from the screen, 50~70cm??).

For someone sitting back a bit (80cm+), its a steal!

I also went home and plugged in my old 27" TN panel.

I then proceeded to watch about an porn on it..... The color reproduction is horrible, bad, bad TN panel.

Once I was that was done, I loaded up the only game that really matters to me (DOTA2) and played a few games.

It's actually too big at my focal distance; I remember now, that's why I changed to the 21" (which is too small).

So, the 25" IPS screens are actually the winner after all.

Only catch is:

http://www.msy.com.a...cd-monitor.html

The cheap ones, with generally good reviews, can only be pushed to 66hz.

I'd love to be able to push to at least 75hz; but I suppose its not a deal breaker, just a preference when the DOTA action gets fast (rarely, but when it does, is when you need the clarity)

I wont be forking out the extra for a 120hz monitor, no chance, but overclocking them, I'm all in!

Curiously, does anyone know if there is a processing chip in the monitor that would benefit from heatsinking (RAM sink) when you're pushing higher than designed refresh rates?

Every chance a monitor could buffer a video frame or two on the same chip it streams the incoming video from.  2 frames of 1980x1200 only comes to a bit under 14 Meg.

I should think if any ICs on the logic board need heatsinking they'd get it.  Can't say I've heard of an LCD throwing pixel artifacts because of heat.

Those acer monitors are down to $179 each thanks to the ebay CLICK20 promotion..... bloody tempting!

I've also learnt specifically the 25" IPS screens are the newest technology. Only LG are providing them at the moment.

They have the least black-glow of any IPS panel!

and they dropped to $171 in the last few days of the sale :D

Got 3.

I've also had it confirmed that they overclock to 75hz almost without exception (I have 3 to choose from regardless :P)

pretty excited!

Now I just need an Nvidia 1070 to come out, and i'm set!

I went IPS in 2008 and haven't gone back, I've still got my Dell 2408WFP ultrasharp 1200P 24", it'll last perfectly until I find a good 120+hz ips 27" for a good price one day.

I'd settle for an affordable 75hz IPS screen. They're just not out there.

If there was a local distributor I'd risk 'south korean' screens any day!

Grrrrr my much loved U2412m IPS 16:10 died a little while ago and I couldn't afford another one.

Paid only $279.00 for it back in 2012 so about a year out of warranty (bugger). Current price is sitting at $429.00

Had to settle for a 25" AOC I2579VM for $300.00 inc shipping.

Only 16:9 and no height adjustable stand but at least it's an IPS panel.

Of course you are my bright little star,

I've miles and miles of files pretty files of your forefather's fruit,
