If the recovery works, you had a borked OTA update from Apple ...

well now i'm getting error 21, man I really love the effort they're making me go to

Try this

 

  1. Connect your iDevice to your PC or Mac via USB cable and launch iTunes.
  2. Hold down the Home+Power button for 10 seconds.
  3. After 10 seconds, release the Power button but keep holding the Home button until iTunes detect your iPhone in recovery mode.
  4. Once your iDevice is in DFU mode, you should see nothing on its screen. It should be completely blank.

it's not going blank, it's having the iTunes logo with the 30 pin cable going into it on the screen, does this do the same thing?

Err try this

 

  1. Plug your device into your computer with a USB cable.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Hold the Power button for 3 seconds.
  4. Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds.
  5. Release the Power button but keep holding the Home button.

ok so it goes into recovery mode, I start the reset, then when it gets to "waiting for iPhone" my phone reboots and goes back to the screen with the iTunes logo

Did you completely turn off your anti-virus (yes it can interfere with the process)?

turned off avg and tried again and still got the same result

OK run out of ideas!

 

Seems to indicate a hardware issue with the phone!

 

I tried to fix a Samung Tablet with the same issue, the battery was faulty and leaking everywhere

perhaps, i'll keep troubleshooting here, not like I really have much else to do
