Assume that's R7-370 with a Core i5-3570K ?

Bit of a mismatch.  I've recently gone to nVidia, AMD just seem to have fallen too far behind insofar as performance of equivalent cards in the range not to mention being somewhat more power hungry and hot running.

I just went a GTX 960 which should perform at a higher level than R7-370 though not by a big margin.

A lot depends on what you want to spend and if your PSU can feed the thing but something like a GTX 1060 at around $300 would give a worthwhile improvement.

Or maybe an RX-470 from AMD at around the same price.

2 Gig is becoming standard at mid-range and up, for single monitor 1080p probably more than enough but if you're doing multi-monitor and/or 4K res then more VRam would be a must.  Though of course don't fall into the trap of low-end cards with ludicrous amounts of memory.

You have that monitor?  I guess then may as well get a decent card to be able to throw out the frames and resolution to do the refresh rate justice.

rx 480 is no faster than the 290 unfortunately so its a bit of a side grade shame your current gpu died

at least its far more efficient than the 290 and competes fairly well with nvidias 1060

I would suggest a GTX1060 graphics card at this point.

It'll handle absolutely everything you need at 1080p, and even go into Ultra HD with no real issue as long as you don't need everything on ultra settings

You could look into after market cards like the GTX1060 G1 Gaming for a little extra juice

yes you do need a amd gpu to use freesync nvidia still refuses to support it pushing there more expensive gsync

you could just run adaptive vsync or fast sync if you have high fps but there not quite as good

extra vram only helps if you need it just like system ram having 128g is no faster than 8g if the games only using 5g

rx 480 on average is faster than the gtx 1060 at high res and in dx12 games

gtx 1060 is stronger in dx11 games at 1080p

the 3g gtx 1060 is crippled a bit so it is actually a bit slower than the 6g model

fairly sure the rx 480 4g is the same speed as the 8g but at 2560x1440 current games will be getting close to the max and it may not be long till that starts holding you back

mind you since the rx480 is no faster than your current card your probably finding the gpu itself is lacking in power with some games already so future plans probably dont really matter other than you may want a new one before long

$400 bucks won't get you in the ground floor on a GTX 1070, seems they start around $570.  You'd get a 3 Gig or even 6 Gig 1060 with change to spare though.

Earlier on there wasn't much indication of your budget.  Really it's up to you, the bottom line is eventually the card will be "too slow" so it comes down to capacity planning on your own part.

what model 290 was it? some have 3y warranty

if you need a replacement and your happy to get one with the same performance level as the old gpu

XFX Radeon RX 480 GTR OC 8GB $379

gtx 1070 was mentioned as its a large performance jump and a decent upgrade from your old gpu its just a shame that it doesnt have free sync and is out of your price range

well the witcher 3 would go from ~40fps to ~60fps but freesync apparently helps make things feel smoother so how much of a trade off that is i dont know

the other option i guess is another secondhand 290 there going for ~$150

up side half the price for much the same performance as a 480\1060

down side twice the power use and no warranty

may tide you over till amds next gpu becomes affordable

If you really want to go with AMD, you could just wait til early next year.

Rumors are coming out about the new cards, AMD wants to come back hard.

And if it doesn't, the other cards you're looking at now will probably be cheaper!

I'd suggest a 470 as a possible option, amazing bang for buck

I'd recommend a switch to Nvidia since AMD cards have kind of just been underperforming relative to Nvidia for a little while now.

If you can afford the 1060 that'd be best, but if not the 900 series cards are also solid!
