With the release of new models of Mobile Phones out soon, Do you need or want a new phone ?

I have a Samsung Note 3, Works fine but the microphone and speaker is shot.

Currently looking at a Samsung S8.

What do you think of the current generation of phones with the water proof rating ?

I think the s8 would be the best with waterproofing if it's like the s7. The iPhone 7 is pretty good. The new HTC models and google pixel not so good.

Seems I got the last of the old then.

What gets me about some modern phones - why the insistence on just being thin?  Thin usually = flimsy which means you want a case for it anyway.  And if the screen is over 4.5" then 7mm or 9mm wide makes SFA difference in the pocket.

And power buttons, why can't we just have it on top where it's less convenient by a little bit but way less prone to inadvertant activation than on the side or back?

I would love to have a new SGS-VIII, but I don't actually need one and can't justify buying it.  My old S-V is still working just fine.  (Come to that, the S-III that I gifted to Mum when I bought the S-V is still going strong, too - and on its original battery!)

YES!

Blackberry KEYone

BlackBerry-KEYone-17-840x561.jpg

I don't game, and I message and multitask a lot.

So, even ignoring the other features like good specs, expandable memory, huge battery and impressive price point (considering the USUAL 'Australia tax')

The Physical Keyboard wins it!

I don't watch movies on my phone, and I don't game. So really this adds worlds for me, and loses.... nothing.

Android ecosystem, 3500mah battery, and 4.5" screen.....

Fucking pumped! I actually have a thread on it :P

It's funny, people love to "rate" waterproofing, but I've not actually met anyone IRL who's drowned a phone (or at least, if I have, never more than once).

And when I got stuck in the 2011 floods and had to walk through them, a quick wash with Isopro and my phone was fine again.

Basically; waterproofing doesnt excite me, I don't intend to swim with it.

I know a phone repairer, the number of times a customer has dropped a phone into puddle of water he's lost count.

And I'm in Darwin and at the moment it's wet season meaning everything is just soggy, and water is everywhere for phones to fall into.

I don't think I'll be upgrading for a fair few years... My S7 Edge is just right for me.

I when I picked it up from Telsta, i quipped that it is "Australia resistant." unlike the previous generation S phones.

I once split coffee on it, and washed the Edge off under the tap

I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes... or should I?

A few weeks later, what do you recommend?

my Samsung Galaxy nexus is getting old (just looked, 5 years)

Need a new phone, solid and reliable,
big screen is a must
no need for all the bells and whistles

under $600

I got the unlocked LG K10 16 Gig from Officeworks, currently $222.  https://www.officewo...phone-imlgk10bk

Good points - recent Android edition, big screen.  4G on the main SIM.

- since unlocked, also relatively free of pointless bloatware.

Bad points - it's stupidly thin.  I have NFI why they insist on making phones that are skinny.  For me I'd prefer a fatter phone with more battery life and screen that occupies a high percentage of the possible area.

- the "16 Gig" part is a bit of a joke, more like 11 Gig and by default it makes no use of the SD card to store apps.  But a bit of research, and an ADB command later, no root required, I extended the volume to occupy half the SD card so in effect have about 45 Gig of slightly slower app storage.

- the power button is on the back so even easier to inadvertantly power up when you're putting it away.

- battery life should be better though supposedly the next iteration has a larger battery.

- the dual SIM is next to useless as the second one is supposedly only 2G capable.

Aside from that, there's some cheap big screen phones from Huawei.  But the problem I had with 2 phones from them is, the updates are thin on the ground and seem restricted to their rubbish "EmotionUI" launcher interface - and worse their phones seem a bit buggy.  The one I recently upgraded from spontaneously rebooted about once every 2-3 months, usually during a phone call.

Most dual sim are 2G for the 2nd slot, which is rather useless here.

Late suggestion, but for cheap phones I like the Motorola range. I'm not up to speed on what is happening with the latest gen of E and G models, tho'.

For real cheap, I like the carrier branded phones.

They're either ZTE or Alcatel at the moment, and both are VERY good brands i've used extensively.

It'll never be a phone you show off, but its certainly a phone that does what you ask of it.

Cheap cheap phones can work, but will basically never get any upgrades, security or feature releases.

For the price you're paying tho', you just upgrade a lot sooner for that.

Sony might be another option but no one cares about what they sell these days.
The new nokias might not hsve any waterproofing like mine.

The XZ Premium is very underrated. It's a top performing flagship and worth every consideration.

Still lacking Physical QWERTY, doesn't meet my one single 'essential' feature. :P
