No telling if the liquid cooled can match the 1080 Ti... but it's very unlikely.

The mainstream products won't come until 2018. My thoughts are that people who want Vega wanted the high end ones anyway?

I saw a link to this in your link... I wonder how true it is?

Yes but those people are going to be such a small market. Those are probably going to be same people buying AMD threadrippers as well.

It also means people will hang onto their nVidias until the new Vegas come and kill off any sales for the current ancient non-Vega GPUs.

Well... seeing as Intel hasn't really innovated much at all while leading the performance in the market, people are only seeing a need to upgrade their GPU's... even while still on Sandy Bridge. The very thread I see you've commented on in BTM. :D

AMD will be following their CPU rollout by the looks, launching high and then slowly rounding down. It makes sense as that is going to clear RX400-500 stock that vendors will want to get rid of as AMD ramps up their Vega mid range. And we don't know yet if these mid range parts will be much better than the current ones too. So I think it's a sensible way to launch. Do my thoughts make sense?

Also... when thinking of mid range GPU parts... think the Ryzen APUs... ooooh.. exciting.

So buying a vega gpu might become impossible if bitoin miners take all the stock

Possibly yes. Some retailers, like the one in the article, are taking steps to limit sales.

:'(

This certainly throws a cat amongst the pigeons

"Asus’ Crazy Liquid Cooled Dual GPU AMD Radeon RX Vega X2 Card – Set To Be The Most Powerful & Power Hungry Card Ever

A couple of weeks ago we heard that AMD has given its AIB partners the greenlight to take whatever freedoms they wish to design custom graphics cards based on the company’s brand new Vega 10 GPUs, including Vega 10 XT (64 compute chip) and Vega 10 XL (56 compute unit chip). If what we’re hearing is true, Asus will take those design liberties offered by AMD to the absolute max to make an absolute monster of a card featuring two full Vega 10 XT GPUs. With over 50 teraflops of FP16 compute, 25 teraflops of FP32 compute and nearing on 600W this card is set to be the world’s most powerful and most power hungry. At this juncture liquid cooling is no longer a luxury but an absolute necessity."

I was kinda hoping that this would happen, and I think that even AMD might have had this is mind too. It's going to suck a lot of juice... but for the cashed up enthusiast, money is no object... having the best is!

Scales well with overclocking... but chews much more power too:

Impressive from Vega but it's power consumption is a tad high.

Yeah it doesn't seem like an efficient architecture. AMD still on the back foot here. If I were on the executive team.. I'd be sending it for tape out of 7nm pronto.

less memory bandwidth than fury x

20% higher clock speed with same number of shader units for roughly a 20% performance increase

similar performance per watt

two years on and all they manage is a overclocked fury x thanks to a die shrink and a few minor optimizations?

fury x is holding up fairly well just a shame it only ever came with 4g vram when it has the memory bandwidth to handle high res

NVidia have the gtx2080 this year to announce, and given the 1080ti is still king. Vega 2 needs to be real good.

Well... when you put it like that... it's not great is it?

That said it seems to be a great card for professional tasks. I'm not sure if AMD chose that over gaming performance, or they tried to pull a Ryzen (one size fits all) and it didn't pan out.

Buy a threadripper, use nVidia GTX1080ti for gaming while bit coin mining using your vega 64 at the same time (yeah, might need a 1000w PSU)

PCG have Vegas BTW
