So I'm helping a mate out.

He's been renting PC's because he's been unable to buy for a long time.

He suddenly came across about $700 spare cash, so I said, lets smash a PC out.

Cool thing? MSY are offering 15% off the total cost, if you build a whole system with them this weekend.

So, lets do it!!!!!

Which comes down to a few cents below $715

I chose these after a fair bit of thought.

First of all, I chose Ryzen, since it has a nice new socket, and will provide some real upgrade paths in the future.

I chose the single stick of 8GB of ram, because as another $90 becomes available, some Dual Channel 16GB action can come into play.

I chose the cheapest B350 motherboard, and I personally just like Asrock.

Unfortunately, a 1050Ti is the best card that will fit in the budget. I managed to find a 4GB card, at least, that will fit in, I'd have loved a 3GB 1060 instead, but a 1050Ti isn't a 'bad' card. We're only aiming at 1080p.

Cheapest 240GB SSD; because...... it's an SSD.... I'm still of the opinion that people who are using an SSD, can't feel the difference in the real world without synthetic benchmarks. SSD, is SSD.

Aaaand the cheapest Antec case, with a 500W PSU, so I know the PSU is at least not going to catch fire on me, and plan Antec cases are cheap.

So, opinions?

Would anyone tweak anything?

We could go up to $750 at MAX, so, not a lot of wiggle room.

Thanks guys!

EDIT:

Sort of considering going up a PSU\case rating...

Something like this:

thermaltake-versa-n25-ca-3g2-60m1wa-00-u

Thermaltake Versa N25 (CA-3G2-60M1WA-00) USB3.0 Black Mid Tower Case with 80 PLUS 600W PSU

$115.00

Which would make it $747

Better case.  850 Evo as the SSD for an extra $25 or so.

Does the mobo have integrated graphics?  In that case you could BYO used graphics card into the situation, ie cheap GTX 960, 1050 or 1060.

Are any of the features on the pro4 board worth the few dollars extra?

Don't the x models come with no HSF?  Ah, nvm, that's apaprently true for the 1600x but not the 1500x.

If we don't buy a GPU, then we don't get the 15% off the total.

I suppose we could buy a $20 workstation card :P

That said a 1050Ti will game quite well at 1080p.

Not much it won't handle, if we accept that 'Medium' is the default settings.

It should play 'Medium' for well over a year.

I really want a 1060 in there, but it's USELESS trying to budget it.

I might loan him some cash and jump up.....

Why the better case?

The cheap antec one actually comes with a rather nice PSU:

"PSU500W Active PFC PSU (1 x 6 Pin PCI-E, 5 x SATA,
2 x Molex, 1 x Floppy, 24 Pin x 1, 8 Pin 4+4 EPS 12V),
Dual +12V Rails (24A - 12V1, 21A - 12V2)"

SSD?

No :(

The Evo SSD breaks the budget, unfortunately.

Nothing wrong with Transcend gear, I have one in my laptop.

Motherboard? I don't think so.

But I do like the 'double thickness copper' they do.... so I might upgrade it for the couple of dollars it costs.

And, I thought that was the case with the X too, but apparently not.

But I'm sure DASA will pop by eventually and have an opinion :P

Which I actually appreciate :)

one option is to skimp on the cpu to squeeze in the gpu but the 1200 is in bad need of a oc vs the 1500x that's ok at stock

AMD YD1200BBAEBOX Ryzen 3 1200 3.4Ghz/4 Core $148

Galax (60NNH7DSL9C3) 3G GTX 1060 $325
$726

the pro4 has 4 ram slots vs 2, vrm hs to help with overclocking or a cpu upgrade in the future and usb c which may well be worth the $5 extra

if his not going to oc then stick with the 1500x and maybe drop the mb to

ASRock A320M-HDV $85

as you don't really lose much other than the ability to oc the cpu

put the cash saved there into the bigger 275g crucial mx300 ssd $139

4.0GHz overclock on Ryzen seems to be pretty standard

So, I lent him $100 more and got a 3Gb 1060 OC (by Galax).

What a nice card!!!!!

Other than that we changed the motherboard to a Pro4 for the extra $5 or so, and away we went!

Came in at $816, and performs like a bloody beast!!!

What is Galax like, as a brand?  I'd never heard of them until a week ago, looking at a similar-ish build for a friend, and pondering just where to cut corners.

What CPU did you end up going with?

1500x, for the double sized L3 cache, and the fact that it came with the higher end Wraith Spire cooler.

I liked it.

They didn't try to hide the cut corners, and they didnt try to bullshit specs.

You can see they cut corners by going down on ports from the reference (came with one DVI, one HDMI, one Display port); but their packaging was all shape-cut foam and thick play cardboard, felt very high end.

I'd personally buy one for myself.

I liked their cooler design as well!

It's almost a 'semi blower' style; there are blower ports at the rear of the card, and a shroud that looks purposefully restrictive to 'releasing air'.

1060OCwebG_01.jpg.

You'll notice the heatsink fins are all facing one direction, toward the 'blower port'. However the shroud is not sealed, so there will be SOME ambient leakage, but the majority will be directed out the port, I'd imagine.

I'm expecting this means you'll get the advantage of the open blower cards (more air flow in from the sides) with the majority of the HOT air being forced out the rear....

So long as your needs match the port availability, I'd buy one for myself :)
