If you're not looking to overclock, go with the Ryzen 1700, that way you get an awesome CPU cooler with it as well :) no need for the X series

I could recommend pairing it with our Gigabyte AX370

As a matter of fact, Mwave has a bundle offer here:

https://www.mwave.co...700-cpu-ac03485

And if you wait JUST a little bit longer, you may find some aftermarket Vega cards :)

And RAM, I personally love the Corsair vengeance series

(Edited mention of budget)

There seems to be 3 variants of that suggested board (K3, 5, K7) with a price spread of $90.  Would be worth looking into the differences.  Also that so-called special price isn't - MSY comes in @ $289/$399 vs $409/$419 minus the $10 discount.

But my main WTF is why anyone would want to stay in Bali for 3 months.

My Bro has been suffering from a Supa Bug that he apparently contracted when he had a car accident in Brazil in 2000 ,17 years hes been in pain and fighting this mongrel infection it wasnt bad enough that he was made a paraplegic from the accident

But only 6 months ago they removed part of his lung because this bug had been slowly eating away at his organs  .He recently gave up the fight and he passed away on the 9/10/2017 2 days before my birthday. This is the main reason im going to bali mate to spread his ashes around Bali as im answering his wish RIP Bro

for gaming i wouldn't both with the 8 core the extras don't really help games yet

go with the 1600x its cheaper and a fraction faster in todays games thanks to the higher clock speed

for mb i like this one having alc1120 audio it seems like decent value

Gigabyte AB350-GAMING 3 $155

2x8g ram

if you dont want to oc at all then 2400 is the go but if xmp 3200 proved stable it would provide a nice boost to cpu performance

For gaming, despite being a huge Ryzen fan, I don't think I'd go AMD.

You've already said you won't be using the two main features of Ryzen!

1. You won't be overclocking.

2. You're not doing anything that benefits from Ryzens fabric\"real" multiple cores.

Games prefer Intels approach to cache management.

Ryzen is only the smarter choice when you can overclock a $150 CPU to beat a $300 CPU (which is kinda the whole selling point, IMO).

Or if you were doing Video Encoding to make use of the extra cores and cache.

very true the i5 8400 can be ~30% quicker than the 1600 in cpu bound games that use 6 threads or less

Which, for the foreseeable future, is all of them.

Plenty of games come out "Multi core aware" but I don't think I've seen any that actually EVENLY stress cores yet.

Have you? (genuine question).

I normally see cores 1 & 2 loaded to max, and occasional 3 & 4 being thrown workload spikes.

Any other cores might get a 'blip' of activity, but I'm yet to see it heavily tax anything past 4 cores (well, threads).

civ6 seems to benefit from the extra cores\threads on amd cpu as the 1700 is faster than the 1600 when in most games the 1600 is faster due to its clock speed advantage

https://www.techspot...8400/page3.html

but the intel cpu dont seem to be benefiting with the 7700k and 8700k performing similar

ryzen also seems to be performing better when paired with vega than the 1080ti so perhaps the amd drivers are somehow better optimized for multi threading now

That is interesting..... As you said, looks more to be architecture dependent more than just 'raw cores'.

Also, on topic, well above $2k systems :P lol

If you want to save some cash, look at the second hand market for an NVIDIA 1080. It'll laugh at anything you throw at it.

If you intend to do VR and are determined to spend a shit load of cash, 1080ti

If you just want to play current games at absolute max settings for the next couple of years, a 6GB 1060 or a 1070 will do.

VEGA is cool, but regardless of RRP, the "new tech price drop" will be a few months away!
