In Topic: What's on your mind?

Personally whilst I quite like Win10 I think it was rushed to market to counter all the criticisms of 8 and in a way they are still writing it :)

Rushed? There was 3 years between 7 and 8 and 3 years between 8 and 10. Both had an update during that time.

Sounds like they're running better than the Japanese rail network to me.

No doubt there was probably things they wanted to add to the original release. But given the bi-annual updates they're doing now, if something misses a cut-off then it generally makes it to the next release.

Think of it like buying a suit that you will wear everyday.

Say you're a 42long, but the 40 "uncomfortably fits" but is 10% the cost.
You'd still opt to pay the 1000% more, and buy a suit that fits, over the one that doesn't.
Because, you'd like to sit down at some point.... even if you're not tired now.

Lovely analogy!

all owned in perpetuity by a government not-for-profit entity.

This should have been the case with whatever plan came to be. Having it turn into what it is now means it goes from a infrastructure project to a money making one, more than likely leading to stupid decisions to save few dollars to look better on their balance sheet at the end of the quarter.

As far as people only buying lower speed plans. That's in part their fault, is it not? 12mb was only supposed to be available for a phone only service, at least what I recall reading at some stage. Yet all the budget providers offer this as their entry level plan at super cheap prices on an overly congested network. Half the providers don't even offer a 50mb plan, and as i stated above, no one in their right mind is going to pay for a 100mb plan when they can't get anywhere near that speed.

Just because of those two things you're essentially forcing the user onto lower speed plans. Then you wonder why no one takes up the 100mb option or why almost no one is on a 50mb plan?

Are you really, truly telling me that shortened copper cables sync at slower line rates than their original length? Really dude?

No, he's saying that FTTN was a crap solution given that many people have lines that are still too long to get a 100mb service. I'm on a 50mb plan and thankfully i get pretty much bang on 50mb sync.

Congestion may be a big issue which is something that can be solved so long as they companies buy and provide the bandwidth required. A line that maxes out at 50mb can't be fixed, at least not in the short term. And definitely not without throwing even more money at it.

If anything, isn't the ACCC stepping in there because of the poor business practice of selling a customer a plan of x speed, and when it doesn't get that speed, leaving them on it rather than moving them - or at least offering - to a cheaper plan that they can hit the sync speed?

And so they should. Given that sync rate is dependent on a number of factors on FTTN, they should have given the opportunity to drop to the most appropriate speed at no charge if the user wants. So for me, if 100mb wasn't happening, give me a 50mb plan if offered. Otherwise give me the choice of paying more for 50mb shy of my theoretical peak, or pay less and lose 25mb on the lower speed plan.

It's ridiculous when you read stories of people paying for 100mb plans but barely hitting 25mb, and there's nothing they can do about it. Or worse still paying for a 25mb plan, getting under that, then being told if they pay for a "speed boost" they'd get better speeds.

In Topic: Same-sex postal survey is a go

Same can be said about the $120mill the govt spent on the postal vote, and given that it's non binding makes the whole thing a farce.

Would have been nice if it was to be a final decision so it doesn't have to be dragged on for however much longer. Otherwise it's a huge bill for no outcome that could've been spent on something much more useful.

The Horizon one though on a quick skip through looks very similar.

Credits shows the Horizon logo and "produced for BBC and ABC"

So i'd say it's the same ep, just that they've added on the little bits at the start and end about how Australia was involved.
