Installing SSD in AcerOne Netbook - boot issues

Hey guys,

Haven't been on here for ages! Lets see if its just as good as it used to be..

I've recently bought a SSD for my Acer Aspire One D255 netbook. When installing a SSD in my other laptop, I found I had to repair the boot sector using my Win 7 DVD, after ghosting the image across and voila, it works fine.

However.. with no optical drive on my netbook, I can't exactly do this...

I've tried making a bootable recovery USB as per this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHk6BNtwy5w but it won't boot from it.

By the way.. I've tried booting into the Acer recovery partition (which I also ghosted over) by pressing Alt+F10, but it doesn't seem to work with the SSD (works fine with the old hard drive).

Any pointers?

Did you set the netbook so it can boot from USB sources? My money is that you didn't do that hence it won't boot from that.

yeh, the option to boot from a USB device would be in your BIOS, probably in the section headed 'Boot' - being a Netbook, it's fairly recent, so, the option would undoubtedly be there.
it should be 'F2' to access the BIOS (I have an Acer lappy here to repair......) if it isn't 'F2', try 'Del', 'F1', or 'F10'
just reboot the machine whilst pressing F2
hope that helps
:)

I've got a D255 and have no issues booting from USB.
I'd suspect the formatting of the USB stick is not quite right if the BIOS is correctly set.
Also, try different USB ports - they are not always created equal.

That's a bit odd as it should just work. Try these instructions here straight from Microsoft.

Only the very latest version of ghost copies across the BCD from windows 7 (what used to be boot.ini)

Best method for you is probably to plug the SSD into your full laptop, and run the windows 7 recovery, so it rebuilds the BCD.
Otherwise you would need a usb cd drive or Bart PE (or something similar) running off a bootable USB stick.

Ok, so finally figured it out!

Use a different USB stick (duh!)

Tried two different types of SanDisk usb drives.. both didn't work.

Then tried a verbatim one, and it was able to boot from it :D
