I'm interested in a microphone for music recording. I'm thinking USB so it can be used with a laptop computer. I don't know anything about this topic. Suggestions?

This is kind of an open ended question! What kind of music are you wanting to record, in my studio we have lots of different mics for different situations/instruments.

Also what kind of budget do you have in mind? I would suggest getting a simple external interface rather than a USB mic. The m-audio fast track interfaces are very good in this regard, can provide 48V phantom power for mics that require it and can also take a high Z (ie direct input from a guitar) input.

Thanks for the reply. It will be mainly piano, but I don't know why that would make a difference. Not really sure about budget, maybe a maximum of ~$400. What is 'a simple external interface'?

Are you going to record an actual piano or a synth keyboard? For a keyboard just go straight into an interface. For an actual piano this is where things start getting a lot more complex. As I have not had any experience recording a piano I would suggest reading the following articles:
http://homerecording.about.com/od/recordin...o_recording.htm
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan08/arti...ording_0108.htm
http://innig.net/music/recordings/method/

As you can see it can get quite involved. Another option that I've seen recommended is use a Zoom H4n (can be picked up for between $300-$400) if you just want a good recording for a demo or just so you can listen back it would suit the bill.
