Well you could get a brand new 6950/6970 for around that much., or you could probably get one second hand for less.
Other second hand cards to look out for GTX480 & GTX570. Any of the above should serve you well as a start. -------------------- i7 2600k | Z68A-GD80 | 8GB RAM | HD7970 | 120GB SSD | 1kW PSU | Butchered Case | Water Cooling | U2713H
HP N40L | 16GB RAM | 6x WD 2TB | Ubuntu | ZFS |

Any of the above should serve you well as a start. Hard to argue with this very good advice. Basically if you will only buy new you will be looking at AMD's previous gen 6950/6970 which are decent performers and will give you all the performance you need, otherwise brand new Nvidia cards are currently overpriced imo, but good second hand cards are popping up at reasonable prices (you might even be able to snag a GTX580 for ~300). -------------------- Q6600@3.00Ghz/Prolimatech Megahalems w/ Coolermaster 2000RPM 19Dba FAN/Corsair 4x2GB 800Mhz DDR2/Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P/Inno3D GTX580 1.5Gb/OCZ Agility 3 240Gb/Corsair TX-750/Antec 900

AMD usually have the best price to performance ratio but if I had to have a crack at it, I say go for the new 7850 you can pick them up for about $250 (from msy last time I checked) and it gives performance thats similar to the 6970 and the gtx 570 with much lower power consumption. Either way a 6970 is a great card if you can find it at that price with great performance which will run any game 1920 x 1080 on the higher settings but with the newer 7850 giving the same performance with the advantage of lower energy consumption, you cant go wrong. In the end its up to you! Either way these days the mid range cards are looking better than the enthusiast ones haha! If you want to wait for the nvidia mid range cards you're more welcome to do so but you might be waiting awhile.
