I just started to research on Blu Ray players since we are planning on getting a new tv soon. The laptop I have is G50vt-X1 basically and I was thinking of getting an external Blu Ray player. External so I can use it at times for my desktop too. Im a bit ignorant when it come to Blu Ray and software I have to admit.

My laptop has a HDMI port on the side and if I get a external drive that plugs into the USB, will this laptop be able to play Blu Ray without stuttering? Does Media Player support Blu Ray or will I need software too? If software needed, any good free programs anyone know of? Im on Vista too since it came with it and I dont use the laptop that much!

I can OC my cpu to about 2.8ghz but the video card will not OC much at all. Just hoping I can do Blu Ray and Netflix for streaming from my laptop to tv. I can spend all day looking this up, which I will continue to do, but I know some of you guys already know this and can answer faster than I could search! Thx!

You will need playback software. Dont know of any free blu ray playback software, but I use Cyberlink Power DVD Ultra version 11 at the moment. Pretty much one of the better suites for blu ray playback.

Note external blu ray drives are pretty expensive (around $165 on pccasegear). You would be better getting a basic stand alone model for your big tv in the lounge room which you can get from the $100 - $150 mark. I have seen them as low as $85.

You could also just buy an internal blu ray player/dvd writer for your desk top. Note you dont need the more expensive blu ray writer models. You only need the blu ray player models which can still be used to burn normal cd's/dvd's (around $55 for an LG model on PC Case Gear)

The graphics card should be fine. No need to OC the cpu.

Im assuming it wont stutter or anything. It will depend a lot on the actual player.

Kool, thanks!

I ordered a Lite-On eHBU212-08 external Blu-Ray burner. I wanted this so that I can use it everywhere. Looks like it comes bundled with Cyberlink Blu-ray Suite, not sure of the version. Hope if plays well when it gets here.
