Free Statistics 101 Class, From Udacity

A free intro to statistics course through Udacity, an online uni-level education initiative, just started up today. I think some of the founders are from Google (I'm sure it's on the About page if you want to look it up).

It just started and I believe it's on some kind of timeline so you can't just do it whenever you want. I think you pretty much have to start now. I could be wrong on that though.

I decided to do it because I've nigh-on completely forgotten what little statistics I learned 12+ years ago and thought it'd be useful.

Looks like a great website, worth noting there are actually other courses available, not just Statistics.
I quite like the look of intro physics/intro comp sci. It also appears you can follow up with an intermediate or advanced course too.

Doesn't seem to follow a timeline either, like you thought. I just found this little snippet on the courses link above:
"Below is a list of our current course offerings. All of our courses are open enrollment, which means you can sign up any time and complete the course at your own pace without homework or quiz deadlines."

I'm actually quite keen to give this a go.

Statistics show that people who have completely forgotten what little statistics they learned 12+ years ago will sign up for internet statistics courses. :)

Just the other day I saw an article about an advertisement for a recent job opening at a McDonald's in Massachusetts that required applicants to have "one to two years experience and a bachelor's degree".

80% of statistics are made up on the spot, 60% of people know that, Director.

I think some game companies have been sending people to this couse, eroniously.

Kind of sounds like we are all a "Statistic" in one way or another.

The nice thing about this over Khan is that it makes sure you're following what's going on as you go and you can ask questions and interact with other students, whereas Khan is sort of like a video textbook - useful, but completely self monitored and corrected.

Statistics go ffarr beyond what you learn in high school.

Heck, I had a very maths-heavy high school career, yet covered very little of what that Udacity course would teach.

I was talking about early uni 12+ years ago. Although the stuff up for this course is pretty much refreshers on grade 5-9 concepts.

My mistake, I totally misread what Director was saying.

My post is best ignored entirely.

I finished the first units of both intro physics and intro computer science today. I found them really easy to follow, and the information laid out well. I never did any physics in school but have done a lot of programming previously, not with python though. I still learned a lot in both courses, I can see myself completing these over the next few weeks and maybe doing more.

Thanks for the link Tantryl.

Gonna ask here on the off chance anyone knows, what kind of weight would these sort of certifications carry in the professional world? I don't think they have any official recognition but may gain some credibility over the next few years.

Cheers

I would assume next to no recognition.

While it may be gained in the future, it wouldn't be something you'd assume or count on. I'd suggest you only do a course if you want to learn about the subject for learning's sake.

That's pretty much what I assumed, thanks tantryl. Have been actually enjoying what I've done so far.

I'm about to start the intro programming. I've been wanting to learn python for ages but hearing about this got me interested enough to do something. I'm going to try and treat it like a uni course and do it week for week as they recommend so I don't just slack off on it.
