In a few months, I will soon be a Father for the first time. One thing I want to do is record all the fun things he will do growing up...
It don't have to cook me breakfast or break the bank. I am not sure how much a decent video camera is worth or what brands to steer clear of. Thanks in advance. TH. |

I personally just use my phone. It'll always be ready and nearby, plus the latest from both Android and iOS camps do a pretty darn good job of HD.

I am not sure how much a decent video camera is worth or what brands to steer clear of. Thanks in advance. TH. Congrats. I have two little girls and I was there for both births and I have been shooting photos and video of them ever since. I started with the birth, then the first bath, first week, first smile, first laugh, first wave, first eye contact and it goes on and on. They seem to learn something majorly new every 3 months. Lots of small things on the way. I find I review the photos more than the video. The video zooms about the place, people talk over the top, the kid grabs the lens and more. I found the photos more pleasing. With Video, I found the best candid tool is a small HD video camera. One you can sneak about with. I would not be scared of cheap as you will likely drop the camera and it will get dirty. Kids do that. I ended up with a good video DSLR for the video I planned and a cheap video for the candid moments. Not really tips for you as far as brands, just what I expearianced. i use a Sony or Panasonic Video camera and a Canon DSLR. -------------------- Michael Jenkin (Mickyj)

I am thinking of getting a good video camera, with a hdd.
One thing my family is lacking is family pictures. When you walk into a home, you see family pics on display. My parents don't have that. |

Bought a HD camera about 18 months ago.
My criteria was that I didn't want it to have ANY storage. The reason being that family and I have had cameras in the past and the tape or disk mech is always the thing to die. I bought the Panasonic HDC-SD700. Good lens with 12x Optical zoom, reasonable features and shoots at 1920x1080(progressive). It takes a SDXC/SDHC/SD Memory Card. Depends how much you want to spend, I guess.
I just picked up a JVC Everio GZ-E10 for $288 (from JB, price matched Harveys) Full HD, takes SD cards, very lightweight and compact, straightforward interface. -------------------- KEN SENT ME
