I have a friend moving to Australia from the US soon, and they're umming and ahhing about whether to pay out their contract with Verizon and bring their iphone 4 (non-S), or leave it there for someone in their family to use.

From what I can work out, a Verizon iphone 4 is either UMTS or CDMA, not both (unlike the 4S), but I'm still a little sure on this.

Can anyone confirm if their phone would actually work in Australia, let alone with decent reception and etc?

Thanks.

If it's CDMA, then you are out of luck. IIRC, the CDMA network was taken down in the early 00s.

If it's UMTS

Then it should work, as it supports the same bands as in Australia.

Thanks. I think it's definitely a CDMA handset, waiting to hear back from Verizon to confirm it's CDMA only :\

Have they tried calling Apple either in the US or here surely they would know?

If Verizon falls through, call Apple Australia or US, and give them the IMIE/serial of the phone. They'll know the model.

I imagine it is CDMA, either way, if they are moving here for longer than 2 years, they may as well get a new one on arrival...

Pretty sure they were holding off on a new phone for the next iPhone release. Getting a new phone now means they'll be on a barely upgrade for however long. And it's not guaranteed to be longer than 6 months ATM, let alone a full 2 year contract.

Good price for a phone if it's just for 6 months.

From my experience, all Androids are half decent.

They're pretty enamoured with apple now. I'd just give them my 3GS and use it as an excuse to get a new and discounted 'droid, but my phone can't do FaceTime (and I know first hand how awful Skype is), which will probably make it more difficult to keep in touch with their family and friends.
