DVD tray keeps ejecting?

OK this is weird. The machine is only 3 weeks old and today it developed this cute little problem whereby the dvd tray will eject at random times, without a disc in it. Pushing the button will close the tray but then after another random amount of time it will eject again.

i7, Windows 7 64 bit.

Any ideas?

OK that's weird. Does it eject the tray if there is DVD/CD?

Don't think so, I loaded up some drivers from a dvd and that worked ok.

Will try another drive if I have to but this one is only 3 weeks old.

Cheers

Is the drive hidden behind one of those hinged covers? If so then the drive has shifted a bit and the external button is just pressing on the actual drive eject button.

This sounds a heck of a lot like a 'joke' virus that went around not too long after CD players were made for computers. From memory it didn't do anything else but make the CD eject.

Your computer has exactly the same symptoms.

If it is, you don't really have anything to worry about, it's just *really* annoying, due to the fact that the drive will eject at random times.

I don't know how to solve it, a search on the interwebs is in order.

sub7 used to have that option with the cd drive, modern day virus scanners would easily able to identify it now though.
Check that the button on the drive is ok, ie. not half pushed in out of aligment.
No possibility of dirt/dust getting in the drive is there?

I had a little look around.

Apparently if the CD/DVD doesn't close properly, ie the 'lock' doesn't engage, it may eject of it's own accord.

I found that info here -->Tom's Hardware.

The post in question is about halfway down and it sounds like the most believable one to me.

I think you're all barking up the wrong tree, and its software related.

Windows 7 will spit the tray out if an application asks to access the CD drive, and it knows there is no disk in there.

Any new software that could be scanning the CD drive?

Like an over-aggressive virus scanner?

Yes.
Or any of those nero monitoring plugins.
a DVD player software

and so on.

EDIT: you could test this by unplugging the SATA cable and leaving the power plugged in.
If it still opens randomly its hardware. If not, its software.

Ahh you might be on the right track there, I know he's recently installed burning software (and God knows what else) including Nero HD, do you know which Nero plugin I should disable?

Cheers

check first.

unplug the sata cable on the drive, but leave it powered.
If its hardware it'll still keep opening as the button shorts or whatever.
If its software it'll stay closed all night.

Yeah looks like a SW prob. Yesterday i uninstalled all his creative software (to try and solve another issue) as well as download accelerator plus, and some thing called 'Hardware helper' (my main suspect) after that the problem went away...so far. ;)
