Free. There's no other word which conveys the feeling of being disengaged from corporate constraint, and the constant wails of wilting wallets. Fortunately for us, freeware and open source software is in abundance, contained amongst the vast tubes of the Internet. Along with this great collection of applications and games is a question most enthusiasts keep on the tips of their tongues. What software is best for my situation? This is where this thread comes into play.
Below are several sections containing links to pieces of software as recommended by the Atomic community. Please report any broken links you may encounter. For VMs:
Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 is still free. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en As is VMware Player. http://www.vmware.com/products/player/ Both free but proprietary. CD ripping: There's Exact Audio Copy ( http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/ free, proprietary) and CDex ( http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/ free, open source) -------------------- KEN SENT ME

We had a list like this on the old site and it was well received, here are my recommendations :)
Ashampoo burning studio free An easy to use burning program that also rips cd does backups ect. Malwarebytes Great malware/spyware removal program. Auslogics disk defrag great and very fast defrag tool. Ares P2P good solid program. Free antivirus Avast BitDefender Comodo Avg PC-Tools Weatherzone A handy little weather station right on your desktop works way better than the Vista one ! And also works by your postcode linking to the nearest weather station. Mail Washer free for one mail account does what it says filters your email, very easy to setup. Frameworkx A little app that removes the GIANT shortcut arrow in vista and windows 7. That will do me for now lol more will occur to me in time I am sure. All these programs work fine in vista. EDIT: Don't forget to RTM and vote for this to be a sticky :) This post has been edited by bowiee: Jun 23 2009, 12:14 PM |

Zoom Player is a decent media player
Smplayer, an alternative to Kmplayer Utorrent, a fully featured bittorrent client. The free System Internals tools for diagnosing and repairing Golden FTP Server, a free FTP server for Windows. IrfanView, free image manipulating and managing tool Auto Gordian Knot - tool to convert DVD's to xvid files. Should only be used for Legal DVD's. As a sidenote, avoid AVG at all costs. It is inefficient, unreliable, and untrustworthy. Use Avira or Avast instead. edit:removed mIRC. There is also the classic Mirc IRC client Zoom Player is a decent media player Smplayer, an alternative to Kmplayer Utorrent, a fully featured bittorrent client. The free System Internals tools for diagnosing and repairing As a sidenote, avoid AVG at all costs. It is inefficient, unreliable, and untrustworthy. Use Avira or Avast instead. As a side note Avg is free and belongs on this list people will use it or not at their discretion. This is not a thread about your personal likes or dislikes so pull your head in. End hijack. |

As a side note Avg is free and belongs on this list people will use it or not at their discretion. This is not a thread about your personal likes or dislikes so pull your head in. End hijack. I was just letting people know that regardless of AVG being free, it is inefficient and unreliable due to not detecting an awful lot of stuff and having false positives, affecting performance. People can use what they like, but they should have information to make an informed choice where possible. mIRC isn't free. It is now?...it no longer requires registration or payment. That's what it stated when I installed it recently.. Well done... As I said, it stated it was not necessary to register when I installed it recently. I'll be happy to remove the link if people think it doesn't belong however. -------------------- The most difficult subjects can be explained to the most slow-witted man if he has not formed any idea of them already; but the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man if he is firmly persuaded that he knows already, without a shadow of doubt, what is laid before him. - Tolstoy

You seem to want to turn every thread into your own personal troll fest. Now you will try to justify to all that you can make comments like this here, knock your self out. |

What? I included it because I had thought it was free, based on recently installing it.
edit: it's not free, so I'll remove it..no problem.....
