It's probably been mentioned here, but would I benifit from the AX over the HX if I'm just running 1 card and not overclocking anything?

What are the major advantages for the AX?

uses a bit less power and the fan stops under low load to make it silent
other than that your not likely to notice the other improvements
hx750\850 have much better efficency than hx 650
if your only using a single gpu and not overclock you probably only need a 400w psu max
corsair ax are much the same psu as seasonic x

Hey guys, is there any reason the Corsair HX650 is not in the recommended list?
Other similar corsairs are and I've noticed quite a few forum members have them, but they are missing from the list.
I figured it would have been mentioned somwhere but I've not been able to find anything directly discussing it.

Assuming there is a reason, could you suggest the best alternative?
I'm looking for a good, modular, PSU at least 550W under $150.

hx 650 is a good psu with a 7 year warranty but its efficiency isnt as good as some newer psu like this one

im guessing the 550w will use the same cables setup as the 650w

there is plenty of reviews of the slightly larger models around and the psu often gets slammed in the reviews as at the time its reported price put it in competition with seasonic x but now the fsp price has dropped a lot and by comparison to other psu in its current price range its not bad

I just had my motherboard and CPU die. When the XFX 750 Black editions system protection kicked in I actually thought the PSU had died. So I swapped it out for my Corsair HX 650 This lead to a puff of smoke being emitted from my motherboard when I hit the power. both PSU have the same system protection (both Seasonic based PSU's). this all happened while the machine was running at stock speeds and voltage.

So i'll give a + to the XFX 750 Black edition and a - the the Corsair HX650

Rather pissed at the Corsair PSU as it fried a very nice CPU 4.4 at 1.22v

I have a very low opinion of Corsair Power supplies. An ax 850 took out my motherboard and an ssd. Corsair replaced the AX 850 with a new one and an 'apology'. I have sought a replacemnt OCZ ssd and am still trying for a new motherboard from ASUS. Not sure if I want to use the new ax 850 again. Its main benefit was that it was silent at low loads. But so are the equivalent Seasonics which have had little to no issues. Strange as the AX series are based on the Seasonics. Except for the ax 850.

Still recommened unequivocally Antec PSU's.

And Seasonic.

Thanks Dasa. My original interpretation was that the ax850 while based on aspects of the Seasonic models was modified somewhat. From what I can gather my issue was related to its voltage regualtion. Something screwed up big time. My concern is that the design is prone to this.

Please dont let this thread go. Im pretty sure this thread has steered people in the right direction for PSU's as their not really a thing you'd be messing around with. Just like our hearts. I think the community should contribute recommendations and rebuild this thread with it.

Anyways, I'm looking into buying a new efficient PSU that wont blow my bank and wondering if an Antec Earthwatts Platinum 650w will power 2 GTX 560 OCed, i5 2500k or 3570k OCed to 4Ghz, a HDD and SSD and 6 case fans with platinum rating efficiency. Its got only 2 PCI-e (6+2) cables but Ive got some 4 pin to PCI-e connectors. Maybe the Corsair AX650 Gold is the last resort if I cant find anything cheaper with high efficiency. Cheers.

found an interesting new budget psu fsp raider lowest price in au is 550\650w $53.9 450w $60
it peaks at ~90% efficient and its low load efficiency on 240v is better than antec ea platinum also made by fsp so it isnt bad considering its a cheaper version of it
but it does have some down sides the 650w model gets a little lose with vreg ect once you get around 500-650w but still within spec so its not terible for the price and anyone that has a pc that uses 500-650w should be spending more on the psu anyway
