I'm trying out the Nexus so I figure this is a good chance to start a thread on some cool apps.
You have the usual;
But what else have people found? I like; Layar This is the Android AR app, with it you can implement layers, essentially 3rd party sub-apps with info. So you can have the AusWiki layer which trawls Wikipedia for local (to you) sites and displays the appropriate wiki page. Or Food and Drink which shows you the closet places to get, wait for it, food or drink! What's cool about this is you can then get directions on how to get there via Google maps with a few touches. Handcent SMS Leckie put me on to this Messages replacement and it seems pretty good so far. Very customisable with lots of options. Any other takers? ==================================== Here are ones that have been mentioned in the thread. Market Alternatives http://www.androlib.com/ http://apps.doubletwist.com/ Apps Astrid - task manager (able to sync with Remember the Milk which in turn can be synced with Gmail) Evernote - create text, image, audio notes Delicious - bookmarks Barcode scanner - quick access to apps Astro - file manager Shazam - music recognition Weatherbug - weather w/ widget Wifi toggle - widget Gmail unread count - widget Cardiotrainer - exercise stuff with gps/maps integration Advanced Task Killer - kills apps freeing up memory Stop 3 Data Roaming - Essential if you're with 3. This app stops you from piggybacking on Telstra's network and getting charged for data. Ringdroid - Lets you create a ringtone with any sound file on your phone. SMS Popup - Greatly expands the options available for SMS notifications. You can set it to remind you, change the notification vibration and heaps more. Smooth Calendar - Great agenda widget that can show next 3 items on the calendar. Listen - Pretty good for Audio Podcasts. Buggy at times with manual refreshes. dPod - I use this for Video Podcasts (Revision3 mainly). KeePassDroid - Password Manager. Temporarly puts username and password in clipboard from Notifications. Same password file can be shared with KeePassX in Linux. Barcode Scanner - Timesaver when spotting useful apps on androlib.com - just scan the QCode and you're on the app's market page. 2G3G - Widget shortcut to 2G-only setting. APNDroid - Widget to turn on/off data by renaming APNs. 3G Watchdog - As the name suggests, keep an eye on data usage over 3G. XE Currency - Basic FX app. Seesmic - Twitter client. Not sure what's it's like if you're a poster, but fine for twitter lurkers. Wifi Analyzer - Decent Wifi Scanner. Has list & chart views. TaskPanel - For killing apps in memory. Using this less now to be honest. London Tube - good for users of the Tube. Pkt Auction for Ebay EasyTether - For tethering Dolphin Browser HD 3G Watchdog - monitors how much of your mobile data quota you use. Will give warnings when you near your quota. Can set the quota, time period etc. A must with the shitty data packages available. LED Light - I hate to admit it, I've been using this a lot when I turn off the lights in the house Go! Sydney - Cityrail time table app. I'm not in Sydney yet, but I've already got it Juiceplotter - lets me know about my battery. The longer I've used it, the more accurate the reading is. Shazam - I like my music and I hate not being able to identify it. Great app that I've been using since my iMate 9502 NavDroyd http://foursquare.com/android/ http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/nexus-one/download/ Vibrate Mode by Force - http://www.androlib.com/android.applicatio...ondou-qzpC.aspx Homescreen widget that toggles normal/vibrate/silent when you press it. - http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applica...widget_yme.html Google Goggles - http://www.google.com/mobile/goggles/#landmark c:geo - http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applica.../cgeo_eore.html SMS Backup - http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applica...backup_zxn.html Timed Profiles - http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applica...ofiles_sal.html Swype keyboard - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=622144 Opera - http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2010/03/opera...ily-on-android/ http://code.google.com/p/gpspeedo/ A bit of a list of things - http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2010/02/top-1...cker+Australia) Another list - http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2009/12/gizmodos...l-android-apps/ http://www.doubletwist.com/ - iTunes for the Android (can't think of a better description :p) Games Barcode Beasties - http://www.androidzoom.com/android_games/c...asties_lil.html Trap Light Racer 3D Milky Milky Tricorder Bonsai Blast Barrage Lite This post has been edited by iamthemaxx: Jul 15 2010, 08:27 PM |

I've been meaning to play with Layar. Thanks for the reminder!
Here are some I mentioned in another thread: Astrid - task manager (able to sync with Remember the Milk which in turn can be synced with Gmail) Evernote - create text, image, audio notes Delicious - bookmarks Barcode scanner - quick access to apps Astro - file manager Shazam - music recognition Weatherbug - weather w/ widget Wifi toggle - widget Plus: Gmail unread count - widget Cardiotrainer - exercise stuff with gps/maps integration Advanced Task Killer - kills apps freeing up memory Stop 3 Data Roaming - Essential if you're with 3. This app stops you from piggybacking on Telstra's network and getting charged for data. Check out Android Zoom for info on all the apps and, if you have the barcode scanner app, you can get quick access to download via Android Market. I copied videos from my iTunes library that are in supported .mp4 format, 1 in 5 plays correctly. I'll re convert with this app to see if things improve. -------------------- Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

Vibrate Mode by Force
http://www.androlib.com/android.applicatio...ondou-qzpC.aspx Let's you set it to vibrate even when silent (cause it's too hard to do through the settings, which is bollocks). |

Swype keyboard
This is freakin' awesome. I'm typing a lot faster with this. Installation intructions 1. Download from here. 2. Transfer the file (.apk) to your SD card 3. Browse to the file on your device via a file manager app and install (Astro, Linda) 4. Navigate to Settings > Locale and Text (Check 'Swype') > Swype settings > Check 'Disable Audio Warnings' (currently sounds cause a force close) 5. You can also view a tutorial from Swype settings 6. Long press on a text input box > Select input method > Swype This post has been edited by Leckie: Feb 9 2010, 03:40 PM -------------------- A family walks into a talent agency. I just used Google Goggles properly instead of just for happy play fun!
My cousin is on MSN asking me why her webcam didn't work. Turns out she has no drivers for it. So I'm trying to help her out, but she can't find model numbers on it. So I asked her to send me a pic. Which she did, then I took a pic of the pic with the N1 and bingo! Model found, which lead me to the drivers.... Google Goggles, awesome app :) -------------------- This aint no fuckin' bible study.
I didn't come here to save whales. I came here to shake my dick and have a great time. |
