My mate Matt scored himself a new lens recently. You just gotta see it!

He says its a Sigma 300-800 f/5.6 zoom, and weighs 6 kg.


I am calling it the Hubble. 8-)


I can't laugh though, it takes awesome shots like this...

I'm pretty sure they sell one with an ef mount. I saw it in KL. And even if they don't you can mount any Nikon lenses or lenses with nikon mounts onto a canon with an adapter (So I've heard) ;)

There are two versions of this lens. One is about $5300 AUD and the other about $13,800.
- Sigma 300-800mm f/5.6 EX DG HSM APO IF Ultra Telephoto
- Sigma 300-800mm f/5.6 EX DG APO IF HSM Autofocus Lens

It's nice to see someone actually buy and use these lenses. Way out of my reach.

I will admit to drolling over the Sigma 200-500 at 2.8

Nice MJ...I haven't done any research on this particular lens, or asked him how much it cost. I would guess the lesser priced one.

He had a look at the 200-500mm zoom in f/2.8 that weighed 16kg....thought it was a bit big to carry through the bush.

However, when it comes to this sort of thing, lugging about 16kg around just for the hell of capturing something in the bush from far off then its a bit much. Thats about as heavy as a standard milk crate with bottles full of milk.

Yeah, my Tamron 200-500 is heavy enough. A few times I was asked if it was a rocket launcher. I have started leaving it at home as it is heavy and bulky, only to find I could have really used it on that specific trip :(

I've been watching a fair bit of video on portrait photography by Peter Hurley...very interesting stuff.

Yeah, I am normally 60 hours + a week but then again, that is expected as it is my business. I don't get overtime though :(

I was having a look through the FB page of one of my son's girlfriends (with my son's permission), and was blown away by how good a couple of her portrait shots were. I am always looking at other people's work for reference and inspiration, so I hope this isn't seen as too creepy or suss, but I just wanted to share them. I think these 2 shots are great. Portrait photography is one area I definitely want to get into...hence my plan for buying that Tokina 11-16mm lens I mentioned in my other thread.

hey Antraman, if you want to get into portraiture i would buy a 50mm, 85mm, or 70-200 first, while tokina 11-16 can be used for portraiture it's not ideal, more of a "certain effect" type lens if you want it for portraiture
