QUOTE A British nonprofit has a novel idea for getting kids interested in computer programming--a computer that fits in a pocket and costs less than the latest video game. ![]() It's called Raspberry Pi, and the prototype isn't pretty--it looks like a leftover scrap from electronics recycling day. But it's a working computer that game developer David Braben and his Cambridge-connected colleagues expect to make available for only $25 for a fully configured system. 700MHz ARM11 128MB of SDRAM OpenGL ES 2.0 1080p30 H.264 high-profile decode Composite and HDMI video output USB 2.0 SD/MMC/SDIO memory card slot General-purpose I/O Open software (Ubuntu, Iceweasel, KOffice, Python) Could be a very cheap way to setup virtual machines around an office. I'd make millions! |

You could run some low volume servers on them, postfix, ngix etc.
A little more RAM and you could run a DB! |

I think it needs a $5 case to cover it. Like that, it's asking to be damaged.

Whats the point of something that can fit into your pocket if it needs to be out of your pocket to plug in? :P

Whats the point of something that can fit into your pocket if it needs to be out of your pocket to plug in? :P Well, in it's intended market (education) it's a very useful feature. Students could plug the machine in at school, do some work with it in class and then unplug it and take it home to do homework. If you have screens and peripherals at both home and school, you may as well take as little of the PC when you are going between them. My only concern is WRT the power supply. It seems to use the HDMI 5V pin for power, yet HDMI is the rarest of all the connections available, coming only in high-end monitors and HDTVs. They'll have to build a HDMI-based power brick for it as well. At least it has composite out as well. -------------------- You can lead a man to knowledge but you cannot make him think.

If it's going to be used in the 3rd world, it will need an external power supply. Unless it's being aimed solely at equalising first-world computer access, which I hope it isn't. It's still a fundamentally good idea - learning to use a CLI and scripting always is. -------------------- You can lead a man to knowledge but you cannot make him think.

Lancer: Odds are, they could couple this with the One Laptop tech, and have a portable hand-cranked dynamo.
I would expect it would be pretty trivial to re-wire it to use a standard barrel connector from another power source. -------------------- Romans 10:3

Although the choice of HDMI for output means they have go get a HDMI monitor, which aren't cheap especially for people who have no spare money. Why Braben is making this and not the next elite/x3 killer, I'll never know. David Braben... *eyes gloss over for a minute of nostalgia* TBH, as much as I want Elite 4, I can understand why he'd concentrate elsewhere. Ya gotta make a living, and anything Elite-like would be in direct competition with EvE. A tough call, IMHO. Having said that, I reckon an updated and made-pretty version of Frontier would run beautifully on modern mobile handsets and tablets... -------------------- "Be Excellent to each other." - Bill and Ted

Odds are that was so they could output audio on the one plug. True, HDMI isn't cheap. But then again, it's becoming more ubiquitous, and odds are they could simply set it up with a different connector. This is effectively the prototype. -------------------- Romans 10:3

Perhaps if they had an adapter that ran composite, 3.5mm audio and barrel power connector off the HDMI socket they could get it to work that way. Solves a lot of problems neatly.
