I'm not a Linux nut by any stretch, but I saw this come up and thought it might be worthwhile attending, especially if we could get a number of Atomicans along.
I'll probably take my laptop, and a spare HDD to install on. http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/ubuntu-au/1410/detail/ QUOTE Ubuntu Installation Festival Upgrade your computer to the Free operating system everyone is talking about. Ubuntu 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot" is available now and the Local Australian Ubuntu Community Team is holding an installation festival in Brisbane this school holidays. Bring a computer you don't mind wiping (or have enough space to install another operating system) and be prepared to learn and be impressed in a supportive and fun environment. If you don't want to bring in a computer but still want to learn there will be a schedule of introductory talks throughout the day with plenty of Q&A time. There will also be light refreshments provided. Free CDs, giveaways and everyone who installs Ubuntu on the day goes into the draw to win a Ubuntu Prize Pack! I might also go see a movie afterwards. When: Sat, 07 Jan. 2012 10:00 - 15:00 GMT+10 Where: Brisbane City Council - Brisbane Square Library in Brisbane -------------------- Put your monkey where your mouth is.

I'm not sure where the attraction is in this. It's just putting a CD into a machine and mashing install butan-u. Ubuntu's installer is brainless/doesn't require rocket surgery these days. If you've never done it before, it might be a good experience, but I don't really see the value in it if they aren't TEACHING you stuff at the same time... z -------------------- Run, Rabbit run,

I think it's a great idea. I'd be keen if there were one on in Adelaide, but since there isn't... :) -------------------- Free Games for intelligent readers / gamers / puzzle hounds.

yeah, looks like I'm gonna have to pike from my own event, as I'll now be moving on that weekend, and have no time or money. :(

I'm surprised that there are any install fests anymore, there aren't even any at the local Linux user group.
Slight difference between install Ubuntu now to installing Debian early 2000's :) -------------------- 如诸佛尽寿不杀生, 我亦尽寿不杀生

for the record, I've installed a lot of linux's over the years, but none really ever last longer than 24 hrs.
my first linux install was at TAFE, Slackware, we had to make our own boot and root floppies. -------------------- Put your monkey where your mouth is.
