cool, wouldn't mind seeing one in a mini ITX PC.

why dont you buy a bigger desk, then you wouldnt have to build all these heatboxes

I think the desk is big enough

I dunno I just have this love affair with ITX systems.

All the PC you need, put simply ITX is

Most people here, me included, don't need a whopping big system. You could easily get more power into a much small system than mine...

Looks kinda like a MX 518 mouse you have? I have a MX 518 for my desktop and had to buy a similar mouse G400 for my laptop bc I couldnt stand the small wireless mouse I had. Cant game with anything else!

Man that case is crazy small, looks like a small sub woofer!

I did another build around september last year that one above was a S1156 build with i5 750 and HD5850 the second was S1155 2500k@ 4.2ghz with a GTX580 in SG06 which physically about 300x310x250mm to give you an idea of size.

Not my point, I know AMD sold the 7970 as 925MHz reference. My point is it has a good 20% more to give, it's easy for them to release a new "refresh" model with a higher clock and a new BIOS if they really felt the need to. I don't think they will as it will likely cost more money in advertising and sending out 10,000 media samples than they would make back in profit from sales. I was just saying it's possible for AMD to compete with the GK110 with their current card if they really needed to do it.

I've picked my cards this generation, I should be draining my system when I have time and putting in my two 7970's. Not sure what is better at 1920x1080, but I don't care as I run 2560x1440. The 7970's 3GB RAM and faster memory bus helps with AA, AF and resolution demands, so it is a winner for me.

So some of you may remember me talking about this earlier on in the thread, saying that AMD could easily launch an "overclcoked" (BIOS updated) version of the 7970 to compete with the GTX 680 for fastest reference card. Well, who would have guessed, they are doing it. AMD are going to start shipping factory clocked cards at 1GHz, which should come bloody close to beating the GTX 680 in the majority of tests, and if it doesn't they will be neck and neck.

Apparently AMD have also given permission for vendors to launch higher overclocked models, as in 1150MHz+, and if my cards are anything to go off, that should turn some heads. When running clock for clock against the GTX 680, the 7970 is faster from my testing, so this could be an interesting development, now that both vendors will have a 1GHz stock clock.

that sounds very cool unco_tomato. i hope i'll be able to replace the bios on my reference card, and maybe get some extra voltage unlocked? 1.3v runs at 40C i need more power.

i run mine at 1000/1500 stock volts anyway.

While I dont really care for clock to clock comparisons here is a review of one, it is still interesting:

The 690 has hit the shelves here at a staggering $1350.90 AUD. I've never seen a card priced that high since moving to Norway, fucking insane. The top end card almost always appeares for around $750.

I hope the prices settle down when more get stock, that's insane pricing!

Yeah, it is pretty expensive. Would have to sell my PC 3 or 4 times to buy it :-/

Just starting to read some reviews now

You think that will happen lol, someone will say well if they add this game or that, then this would be better than that haha! Like Civ5 and Heaven, Ill start the controversy!

No, but really, Im betting that the HD 7970 at GTX 680 speed with high res is nearly identical probably bc of 3gb of ram. Lower res it looks like the GTX wins in the clock to clock comparison by 3-10%. I bet 50mhz more on the HD 7970 would make a tie at low res and meet or beat at high res.

at the same clock they are very close and the gtx680 may be a bit more powerful gpu thanks to its boost clock which is rather cleaver but the 7970 extra memory bandwidth does give it an advantage at res over 1920 and most reviews do show it lead at 2560
but really its so close it doesnt matter

I think they set the HD 7970 at 1058mhz, but yeah its dam close!! Seems like most all the HD 7970 are good overclockers too. Not really sure how well the GTX on avg does for OC but I think it throttles down once it starts to get hot.

I read on anandtech they locked out voltage control on the GTX680's I think so overclocking can be hit and miss?

personally I don't think GPU's really need overclocking, the gains are so small its not worth risking your cards whereas CPU's are cheap by comparison like if you killed a 2500k its only $220.

You can't set a specific voltage on the GTX 680, only a voltage range. Overclocking becomes very unstable once you go above and beyond 15%. This is why the only records on the GTX 680 are taken with a custom VRM board soldered onto the card. All 7970 records are taken on largely unmodified PCB.

Good point about cost, but overclocking is just too fun!!!!!! I like fighting for every last drop of free performance!

Interesting about the custom VRM, while I dont think Ill ever try it on my own. Hopefully Ill be able to get up around 1300mhz with boost when mine comes in... All my previous AMD/Ati card have been great overclockers. Both my HD 5850's and HD 4850's did great, thats what I loved about them! Ive been on camp red for a long time with both cpu's and gpu's, thought Id try the others for awhile and jump camp again Im sure in the future!

I can't say I agree with this, it should really be the other way around. Overclocking a GPU actually has very significant gains. I've managed to improve performance of my 7970 by around 30% without any risk of killing it or damaging it, if I had two of them, that would be like getting a third for free. Overclocking a CPU is no more difficult, but will not improve performance anywhere near as much, as we just don't need 5.0ghz CPUs but we do need all the GPU power we can get.

Looks like a decent card, and a significant improvement over the 590. Interesting to hear about their binning technique for the dual gpu card.
Also makes me wonder where is the 7990?

The HD 7990 will come out after AMD knows exactly what the GTX 690 can do, so they can clock accordingly lol.

And by then they'll have enough chips, so it'll actually be purchasable, not just some mythical card :-P
