Hi Guys
Just need some advice as to the best approach here. I have a Dell laptop that needs a repair install done on it - multiple damaged windows files. Unfortunately I can't read all the windows product key. The first part of the sticker is torn so the first three characters are missing. The next two are OK as are the remaining sets of characters. What's my best approach here? Should I try ringing Microsoft or should I ring Dell? BedeM -------------------- BedeM

If Windows came pre-installed on your computer you should contact the manufacturer to get a replacement key.

As said above, there are plenty of windows key finders available. Jelly beans are yummy!

Thanks for the responses.
I know about Jelly bean and would have used it have used it if I could get into Windows. It all seems to be rendered moot now as the laptop has decided not to responds at all. Lights just flash, no bios even. BedeM -------------------- BedeM

I'm pretty sure Dell installs don't ask for CD keys.

If you still want to grab the install key then slave the lappy HDD to another PC run MagicJellybean as administrator and go to tools > load hive and point it to the x:\windows folder (x being the drive letter of the slaved lappy drive). Boom Windows CD key and Office keys.

Was about to suggest this myself - http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html will do it as well I usually copy the system32\config folder to a thumbdrive though This post has been edited by Khirareq: Jan 29 2012, 10:27 AM -------------------- "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind" - Dr. Seuss

UBCD4Win is an easy way to check the key using MagicJellyBean (pre-loaded to UBCD4Win) if you don't have a second PC to put the HDD in.
Although you need a working second PC to create the UBCD4Win disc :P -------------------- "Unless I call you a stupid goddamn liar to your face, I'm being light hearted." - tantryl, to all you evil fucks

I have come across a Dell Alienware PC that didn't require entry of the Product Key.
