Diablo 2, Yes 2, not 3

So in anticipation for diablo 3 coming out I decided to load up diablo 2 for a bit. This was the best game in the world at that time imo, I spent countless hours on it summoning skeletons and watching them fall apart like card houses.

But looking at it these days is like rubbing sand in your eyes, I literally couldn’t play it for more then 2 minutes before I had to go have a shower to wash off the filth.
Unlike wine, games don’t get better with age.

Has anyone else fired up a game only to have your childhood memories ruined by crude resolution?

Yeah - Did the same thing recently myself with Diablo II - Could not get LoD downloaded fast enough to get 800x600 (My CD doesn't seem to work any more and I can't find the other 4)

Played the first Diablo for a bit the other week, graphics didn't bother me, gameplay did though.

Personally only played D2 for a few hours when it came out, back then I wasn't into that sort of game play style.

But yes I have fired up a few old games fairly recently, graphics don't really bother me, as Nuke said above it's game play that I can't stand. The way a game plays has definitely been improved upon, it's really hard to fire up an old FPS and get the same enjoyment out of it that you do most modern day FPS games, same goes for RTS, or any other genre (imo).

Some people can still fire up old games and get enjoyment out of them though, props to them I guess... I struggle with it.

I would lose myself hours upon hours on grinding with weaker bosses before facing up to Baal or something.

Loved the unique feel of Diablo.

Whilst I had fun with Diablo II, I had just as much with Sacred and Sacred II.

Speaking of which, Sacred III is supposedly in the works as well.

Some games, your comments stand true.

But try to find a game like Fallout 1/2, Arcanum or similar these days.

Near impossible.

Diablo 2 I still enjoy occasionally when I don't want to have to think and want a button masher.

First Diablo totally put me off.

Everything was just too clunky.

Fallout 3 is painful. Graphically pretty (With mods).

Fallout story is massive and awesome. Fallout 3 it is obvious that it's an attempt at a cashcow from a popular series.

I admit I did like being able to wander around the countryside. That and the period radio broadcasts - though they got repetitive quickly.

What I didn't like is a bit more extensive a list:
- the absence of the humour that Fallout 2 and Tactics had.
- the timescales were WAY off. (Zero regeneration after 3 centuries? Explain Pripyat or Hiroshima to me. The subway steam pipes still hissing, transformers and computers still had power but the streetlights that still stood didn't work? Bah!)
- the storyline ending (particularly) was incredibly unsatisfying.

Not to mention the bugs. Even after all the official patches.

Of course, I played shit out of it anyway. ;P Especially once I threw some mods at it. (Weather, dark nights, green plants, more radio stuff being amongst the primary ones.)

Speakin about fallout and how they dont do story lines like that anymore, I found that Star wars: the old republic has quite a bit of shock factor in the quest options like fallout.
On the Sith warrior you get one quests to kill this chicks husband for money, after killing him you can tell the now widow that you dont want money and you just wanna root her. Her son and your republic slave in the room object and think its horrible, so you can electrocute the slave then force the son and the slave both watch you hook up with the mum lol

After that later on in the game the kid sends bounty hunters after you to kill you, but the mum sends you love letters with money in it haha.

Dont see quests roll out like that very much any more
