Hey everyone,
Maybe atomic might like to do a story on a guy here in Brisbane doing a 109+hr marathon of gaming (for a world record) on diablo 3's release (15th May). He is doing it to raise money against bullying etc for the Sophie Lancaster Foundation. Other members might like to watch his stream or support this cause. More info in the links below Thanks, -Hitman http://www.diabloworldrecord.com/ http://www.facebook.com/Hzrd919 http://www.justgiving.com/hzrd http://www.sophielancasterfoundation.com/ This post has been edited by Hitm4n: May 13 2012, 12:00 AM |

If Atomic actually wants to do a story, or if anyone wants more info in general, I can get you in contact with Hzrd. I coded http://www.diabloworldrecord.com, and know Hzrd IRL. He has just scored a sponsorship with Thermaltake eSports, and has over $1500 in prizes to give away during the 109+ hour on the live stream.

So, according to the rules, he gets 5 minutes of break time per hour, which he can accumulate into 2 hours per day.
That is not enough to survive 5 days on, given he also needs to eat and crap during that 2 hours. I genuinely hope he falls asleep before he does himself physical or psychological damage. And I'm sure we'll all contribute to the charity no matter how many hours he clocks up. -------------------- Proud to have been last to let go of the dream.

I would be concerned about any duty of care implications that sponsors may face, if he does indeed go for the full 109 hours and suffers adverse health risks.

Well in answer to a few questions.
@Virtuoso: REM sleep is the hard part really. He thinks he is getting it for 20-30 mins when he does sleep and has tested it with a number of trials over 50hours at a time and felt fine. The record for anyone using this method to stay awake was 11 days - but yes they had side effects during this such as hallucinations, being quick to anger, and lack of concentration. He plans to play 6 hours - then 30 min sleep etc. @nesquick: Diablo 3 will never be shit :P @Nich: Yeh - im not sure of how this would go - but he has completed the necessary forms to make this an official world record attempt, so i'm thinking that no-one will be liable for anything since this was his own decision. I'm not sure if he can or can't actually do it - but for the cause itself im happy to throw a few $$ his way. If nothing else it will be interesting to see how he manages it. |

If he makes sure he gets a lot of sleep beforehand, and eats properly and etc, then he may be ok for 5 days using powernaps/microsleeps. Diablo is not so challenging that he can't drink while playing, but I expect the eating may be more of an issue. It also will depend on how rigid/strict he is with his gaming/rest cycle.
That being said, 30 minute powernaps every 6 hours are going to be rough on him by about day 2-3, especially if he'll be cutting into it to pee and poop, even if he doesn't make himself sick. (At one point, a couple of years ago, before getting a diagnosis of sleep apnoea and insomnia, I was averaging about 4 hours of sleep per day - 2 hours every 10-12 hour cycle - for a few months before I truly burnt out. But I build up to it gradually, as it were) That being said, GL to him! -------------------- "I think it is a sad reflection on our civilization that while we can and do measure the temperature in the atmosphere of Venus we do not know what goes on inside our soufflés" -- Nicholas Kurti

Stream says its postponed because he's sick :s Yeh i was watching his stream then got some dinner and played some d3 myself. When i returned i saw the same msg. I asked about it to the people in the channel and apparently he was throwing up or something. I guess its smart to postpone it to a later time when his body is fit for it. I hope he attempts it again when hes feeling better - i still have a small amount of cash to throw at a good cause! :D |

Wont this require the servers to be running for 109 hours?
