power use isnt so different some tests show 7970 using less power than gtx680 depending on the game which is a good effort considering it has much higher memory bandwidth with half as much memory again and im betting that the 7970 ghz will use less power than the 925mhz model if rumors about vdrop are true and my experience is anything to go by
system power use at the wall idle 92w 7970 fur load 305-314w 925mhz 1175v 260w 925mhz 1025v 295-300w 1100mhz 1137v 295-300w 925mhz 1137v 310w 1100mhz 1137v 7500mhz mem as for drivers imo both nvidia and amd are about the same and a fair way short of perfect but a lot less trouble than steam and this oo amd have bad drivers is blown way out of proportion yes 2900xt are worth about as much as fx 5000 cards were a few years ago... the 8800 were great cards and the gtx480 are still absaloot bargains as far as performance per $ for secondhand cards but they are cheap as they are a very power hungry loud card more heat? no not really but more noise yes although not by much its about 43db vs 46db -------------------- 2600k@4.8GHz 1.38v - Z77-GENE - 2x4g 1600 8-9-8 - 7970 1150\7000MHz 1.15v - OCZ Synapse 120g Seagate 2tb - Seasonic XP1000 - Dell U2711 - Pioneer Todoroki 5.1

QUOTE My comments would probably make more sense if I said that yes I am biased towards Nvidia, the resale value thing was just a personal experience (bought and sold so much shit over the last few years), an example would be a 8800gtx which is still worth a fair bit compare that to a 2900xt which you couldn't give away and you can maybe see where I am coming from. I do see your point, im the type of guy that usually leans towards AMD but im up for really anything thats good and saves me some $$$, right now i have an old 9800gt currently in the process of building a monster pc but waiting until the ghz edition comes out. As of right now, cant say for sure until its out but the ghz edition is pretty much going to make the gtx 680 look like a pretty shitty buy especially here in Australia where the nvidia cards are always at a premium and thats something you cant deny. As i said i do lean towards AMD but when you have a card like the gtx 670 (as an example) thats at an amazing price:performance ratio and its just a damn good card, you just cant really fault it. But in this case, the gtx 680s performance domination is going to be short lived especially, as ive said, if AMD do keep the ghz edition at the same price point as the current 7970, you just can't expect a person who has some knowledge about the specs of a pc to pick the gtx 680 unless they REALLY prefer nvidia. As Dasa stated, you might get the average Joe who might buy the gtx 680 out of a whim, (and admittedly I was even seriously thinking of getting it) but again, its just honestly no where near worth it. reviews are popping up
1000mhz 1162mv 1050mhz boost 1218v so its power use and noise is up a fair bit guess they havent really made any improvements to the fab process and have just cherry picked some cores my old 7970 came stock at 1000mhz 1112mv and can do 1100mhz with 1130mv so im a little disappointed that they havent really improved it in any way performance is now a smidgen ahead of the gtx680 but is it worth it over the standard 7970? http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_..._Edition/1.html http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-79...edition-review/ http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardw...ion-review.html new beta drivers have a few improvements for amd and nvidia http://www.anandtech.com/show/6025/radeon-...up-to-gtx-680/3 with a lot of work gone into skyrim by the looks http://benchmark3d.com/amd-catalyst-12-7-beta-benchmark/3 edit found a few more at xs driver comparison far more things covered in this one and some big gains http://lab501.ro/placi-video/amd-radeon-hd...ition-review/22 reviews http://lab501.ro/placi-video/amd-radeon-hd...-edition-review http://vr-zone.com/articles/amd-radeon-hd-...rs/16362-1.html http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Graphics-Card...-Taking-GTX-680 http://hothardware.com/Reviews/AMD-Radeon-...-Review/?page=1 http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/graphics/413...70-ghz-edition/ http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon...hmark,3232.html This post has been edited by Dasa: Jun 22 2012, 04:28 PM -------------------- 2600k@4.8GHz 1.38v - Z77-GENE - 2x4g 1600 8-9-8 - 7970 1150\7000MHz 1.15v - OCZ Synapse 120g Seagate 2tb - Seasonic XP1000 - Dell U2711 - Pioneer Todoroki 5.1

Our sample here can run 1050 @ 1.118v, but it is an ES so I won't be putting that in writing in any of my reviews.
So far i'm happy with the performance, but it's obvious this was basically just a quick move to try take performance back from the GTX 680 officially with reference models. -------------------- Intel i5 3570 @ 4.5GHz - Gigabyte OC HD7970 @ 1150MHz - 16GB G.Skill Ripjaws @ 1866MHz - ASUS Maximus V Gene - Antec EA-650W Platinum - Fractal Design Define Mini - Noctua NH-U12P SE2 - 10TB Network Storage - OCZ Vertex 3 240GB (Steam) - Corsair Force GT 3 120GB (OS+BF3).

I was hopeful for a lower vcore, but thus us just basically a super clock edition :(

Thats all i expected them to do is just oc it to 1000mhz plus they can do it now with current cards so i dont see why they would try lower the volts.

Well it seems like even the original 7970 is doing a whole lot better now with the 12.7 drivers. It seems like AMD just wanted to take back the performance crown, I guess they did but now I'm just thinking about the price. If its still cheaper than the gtx 680 Ill be getting one definitely.

rrp for the new card is $499 same as the gtx680 should be... the 7970 is still ~$460-480rrp
lowering the v would allow them to get noise and power use around that of gtx680 this card is just an official version of non reference pre oc cards we have had since the release of 7970 only its louder and uses more power than most This post has been edited by Dasa: Jun 23 2012, 09:59 AM -------------------- 2600k@4.8GHz 1.38v - Z77-GENE - 2x4g 1600 8-9-8 - 7970 1150\7000MHz 1.15v - OCZ Synapse 120g Seagate 2tb - Seasonic XP1000 - Dell U2711 - Pioneer Todoroki 5.1

I guess everyone was expecting a lower vcore sadly that didnt happen. What I am interested to see is third party iterations of the 7970 GE, looking at MSI in particular.

Looks like AMD are readying an AMD 7950 Ghz Edition to match/beat the gtx 670, details:

I dunno to be honest with you, they said that its going to be more energy efficient but they didnt lower the vcore of the 7970 GE sooo your guess is as good as mine =/

Im unsure if even the current HD 7970 and 7950 have the same vcore but we know that the GE had the same as the regular HD 7970. If they did lower the vcore on the 7950 then I bet it would be able to OC very high (which it kinda does already) and might turn to be a highly wanted item? More energy efficient might mean something! I dont really see the point in HD 7970 GE for users when most can OC that high anyway, maybe just to even up both sides.

I think with >1ghz+ on the 7950 will bring it out in front of the gtx 670, the thing im wondering about is the pricing, if its the same or even lower AMD can really put nvidia down. Now all we need is some benchmarks...

This is seriously un-fucking-real, this 7970 is ridiculously powerful:
http://www.techpowerup.com/169148/Sapphire...IC-Edition.html Fastest single GPU card on the planet? Yep i definitely think so. |
