Actually I was dancing the Tango with the missus, so you can blame us.

(we didn't feel it at dancing classes but the kids at home sure did...)

It was just a plate movement deep below the surface nothing major to worry about. You may get some aftershocks so keep away from falling objects. With all the pressure on the Earth Overheating something is bound to give way.

Old joke is still relevant, considering the reaction to the event.

:)

Americans are kinda funny, we've had several asking if we are ok - We're in Perth, it's like thinking a California 'quake would affect New York. :)

Glad everyone is ok, according to a geologist I know it's actually a good sign, the plates are relaxing from the big ones on the ring of fire of late.

Cheers

Still here dude, haven't sunk yet. Not to mention if it wasn't for use you would all be speaking Indonesian by now.

:)

It's sort of true, Tasmania is sinking, at about 3mm per decade, not exactly anything to bother our friends down there, probably rebound anyway :)

I suppose the deeper question really is have we seen the last of significant quakes on the mainland for now? Nobody seems to know, we do get tremors quite a lot really, there was one in SA only a few weeks ago and now this in Vic. WA is probably overdue, although we are far from the ring of fire but not immune.

I hope not, putting all those books back on the shelves would be a chore :)

Tectonic plate theory seems to account for recent events pretty well, but since the two big ones that generated tsunamis media attention has focused rather strongly on what is actually an annual global cycle.

Some people seem to think the recent increase in solar flare activity is part of the cause, not going to dismiss it, there is a lot we do not completely understand and certainly we are in the peak of the eleven year solar cycle.

No way to know really, but I do vividly recall Zeph and Donna posting here about the quake way down south that shook the Apple Island, then a few days later the big one hit in Asia and sent a wave clean across the Indian Ocean.

I suppose the plates will find equilibrium, the physics says that is the nature of them, but have they yet? do not know.

Many years back now there was a funding attempt to get thermal imaging sats to keep a look out for localised temperature changes, makes sense, an increase in geothermal temperature would indicate a possibility of a 'quake but the money went to spying instead.

Mother Gaia will do what she wants, we can't control her, but it would be nice to have a little warning of her temper tantrums.

Cheers

Australia is moving north at the rate of approximately seven centimetres a year. Some people reckon it would be a lot faster if Tassie was not here to act like a drag anchor.
