Full Version: Recommend me some Metal \m/

So I have this rather large document I am working on, and it is on the most dry and coma inducing subject I have ever seen. Anyway the only thing that has gotten me to where I am so far has been listening to System of a Down: Toxicity. All of my dance and trance stuff is just putting me to sleep while working on this thing. I am a metal newb so keep that in mind. My exposure to it has only been what has been sound tracks to movies, Rammstein's song Du Hast, and the System of a Down album I bought when Chop Suey! Was popular.

Im looking to buy some stuff tonight on iTunes so I can have it for tomorrow. So if possible please restrict it to things I can find on there.

Just to start you off.

There's also here.

You've got a VERY limited exposure to it, so start off easy.

Iron Maiden is a decent start.

I've been listening to Wolf's latest album "Ravenous" a lot this last week.

Dragonforce is good clean fun.

And anything Devin Townsend's been involved in is usually pretty fucking awesome.

It really depends on what your tastes are as it's huge genre with tonnes of different styles and speeds and sounds.

EDIT: I'm out. You don't even know the genre, but you slam Metallica.

Kora

My opinion is based on their opinions on digital rights, and how they aggresively enforce them. Not the music itself. But because of my opinion of them i wont listen to them.

Does that piss you off less?

Yeah, System of a down isn't metal. Are you actually looking to get into proper metal or stuff similar to System? Music is so subjective it's hard to recommend something without actually knowing more of what you listen to. You mentioned you listen to trance music so maybe some lightish industrial is where you want to head, something like Static-X kinda fits the bill for that. I'd say your best bet would be go to http://www.music-map.com/system+of+a+down.html and give some of those bands a go, it's far from perfect but I've found some pretty good bands using it.

Yes, but your are cutting off your nose to spite your face. If you want to know Metal, then Metallica's first five studio albums are must haves. I can appreciate you have an opinion on the digital rights issue, and you are entitled to it, just like Lars Ulrich is.

If anyone suggests Disturbed, I'll punch them in the face.

Demigod
In Flames

Fairly 'heavy' and I'm not sure if you'll find them on iTunes, but worth a look.
StaticX
Fear Factory
Rammstein
NIN
KMFDM
Static-X duhhh!!! :)

not so much pure metal as industrial which i prefer to metal ... you might like it

Arch Enemy. They are high on my playlist at the moment. I can't believe they slipped under my radar for so long :( Anthems of Rebellion is a god album, but they have a live compilation called Tyrants of the rising sun that is worth a go.

I suppose if you liked system of a down you'd also like Static-X. Quite a bit of energy there to keep you awake, and they really aren't that bad.

I too would like to bash Metallica. They aren't really metal anymore, probably they fall into the country and western genre right now...perhaps hillbilly rock if you wanted to be really nice to them. Being of the internet, I in no way credit them with the joy they brought me up until AJFA, and only rate them based on Load and the horrors that followed. So there :P

EDIT Just for Static-X: I once worked with a girl who did a few lines and a few band members last time Static-X visited Aus, and wouldn't stop raving a bout how spunky they all were, and how awesome a band, etc until we asked her what was their best song, and she didn't know one but said she liked ' Um, I think it's called untouched or something'. We still don't know who she was backstage with. I personally can't tell Korn and Static band member s apart, but maybe 19 year old girls have better eyesight :)

Oh I'm sure they wouldn't turn a blind eye.

You don't need to defend your dislike of Metallica. I love metal, but don't like them at all. There are so many better bands out there.

I'd be inclined to go against the grain of this thread and naming 40 (very good) bands which can take more than a year to go through, and instead pointing you in the direction of a torrent:

http://isohunt.com/torrent_details/2832319...ney?tab=summary

Which isn't an album.

I can see where Hector was coming from. He is right that i dont know anything about a genre, and assumed that i was trashing them based on their music. I didnt properly elaborate why i thought they were tools and couldnt stand them.

I'll give that torrent a go, and see how i like it. Id heard of it before, but never got arround to watching it. I have ended up getting a mix of Rammstein, and NIN singles. They should get me through till pay day when i'll sample some more and can start thinking about the others listed here.

You definitely want to spin some Disturbed bro.
