And What Are You Listening To?

Just listened to Eye of the Tiger for the first time in decades. Seriously how is Survivor a one hit wonder? They should have been able to come up with more of that.
  2. Yeah that's the thing that's always put me off - I wanted security, just want to stuff around not knowing what my budget was or how much money I needed to be putting away, or being surprised by loss of work etc. Also some of the contract staff I've met who are in long term relationships sometimes spend significant amounts of time in a different city to their partner. That would suck arse (and not in that good, millenial way... ). Anyway, thanks for all the food for thought. Ah, right, I was thinking of just applying for jobs but that sounds much less distasteful.
  3. I've had a a few jobs - okay two jobs - with job for life security but then there are other considerations like bureaucracy and like chrisg said, wanting to murder idiots. When I've worked on projects, the tech contractors have generally known their shit. But the PMs and BAs have usually been dumb as boxes and just stuff around and delegate work, then piss off if anyone notices how worthless they are. So is it hard to get work? One girl I recently worked with told me a month or two before a contract ended she would start applying for work, and would send out a few hundred applications before she got a job. She did manage to work almost all the weeks of a year though.
  4. I've had people recommend it to me over the years but I never looked into it - I prefer stability. But now my life is a bit hippy and carefree, I'm browsing and ... and I looking at the right thing? Pay rates upwards of $800 and $1000+ per day? Seriously?? What's the catch?

Do own many things that others wouldn't?

We all probably have a few things that are fairly unique but most of my stuff would also be garbage. Probably the thing I'm most proud of is a fairly extensive Isaac Asimov book collection. Not even half way though - he wrote or edited about 500 books and I would barely have 200 I think. Still, a large chunk of that 500 is anthologies he edited or other texts he lent his name to where he was just one contributor, so I probably have most of his wholly original work.

Help! Baby on the way ... what do I need to know?

Oh probably the two most surprisingly useful gifts we received were a baby thermometer and baby nail clippers.

Forum downtime / new feature testing

Why does it look all different? Put it back!!
  8. Yeah I suppose all the security precautions make sense. It just seems a waste so I thought I might be able to save someone some money.
  9. Psychiatrist said I could give it away... alternative he gave me was to give it to him and he'll use it in the hospital. Actually the first thing he said was just chuck it but I don't like waste...

a nice soak in a bath?

Yeah my first apartment had a small bath/shower combo. We never used the bath as a bath and I found out our last tenants only used it to soak the stains out of their chefs uniforms. You could wash a kid in it but you wouldn't want a couple with a kid living in a one-bedroom apartment in the first place. Was the size of a shoe box. When we had to renovate I got rid of it and just put in a large shower stall.

don't want to make you paranoid, but...

It's a bit too late for that. They should change the security settings for everyone.
  12. I have an almost full packet of Ritalin that the medical community won't buy back. Yours free if you need it. Edit: changed "take" to "buy".
  13. Damn, that's a terrible run of bad luck. I hope it means there's a bright side and good things are coming.

    Nitro - where are you?

Yes I remember him, but didn't know he played in a metal band. My friends who did that eventually gave up as they couldn't make money off it so had to return to day jobs.

don't want to make you paranoid, but...

I opted in ages ago. I have chronic health problems (not serious ones, but still) that I would like any doc I go to to have access to. Of course, they don't, because the records aren't there! But anyway, one lives in hope. You can set up an alert system to get notified every time someone access a record. That should at least reduce the risk of unauthorised access. If the data is lost wholesale though, that's a different story. But I'm assuming if that happens, millions of people will be in the same boat and the government would have to get rid of the system and start again. (I'm not worried about my health records being public knowledge, I'm worried about identity theft).
