    Software Boardgames - any good?

I've never played software boardgames before - except for the online kind like Scrabble. But Humble has this at the moment: https://www.humblebundle.com/games/digital-tabletop-2 And I'm intrigued. How do they work? Some of them say you can play multiplayer locally. Is that on the same screen, or do you need a LAN, or via an online server, or what? And anyone familiar with if the experience is any good versus using an actual board IRL?

    Regular laptop or 2-in-1 ?

Hmm, fair enough - I suppose you don't really keep that sort of thing connected for any length of time. You spend a few seconds transferring data and then you remove it. It makes more sense if you're using it as secondary storage on a tiny ebook.
  3. I'm looking at getting a work laptop and will apparently be doing 20% - 50% travel, giving presentations, connecting to SaaS systems and generally just doing office productivity stuff. The specs seem pretty similar for the prices, in fact the regular laptops are a bit lighter for the same size, but I've never used a 2-in-1... is it actually worth it? That's the machine work is recommending me but they've left the final decision up- to me.

Cool thanks for the feedback. I think the delivery is coming today!
  5. Since you've written this I've found some other references to the same thing searching the Web. Haven't looked into it too deeply yet.
  6. So I'm trying to understand this situation. I have an ancient Samsung Story 1.5Tb external mechanical HDD with a USB 2.0 connection and a separate power supply that plugs into the wall. Works fine on my 8 year old laptop. Gets a Code 43 error (device reported an error and has been disabled or something) on my brand new Win10 lappy. Was troubleshooting this for a while and eventually I tried plugging it in with a y-cable to my 2x USB3.0 ports on the new machine and hey presto, it worked! Now, WhyTF would a device with it's own power supply need TWO USB ports to draw current from, before it works? I looked up the ratings and USB2.0 is rated for 5V and max. 500mA current, USB 3.0 is 5V and max. 900mA current. I don't get it? On my old computer it literally works fine with a single cable on a USB 1.0 or 2.0 port (the former is just slower). This thing is now plugged in to a 1800mA source. Why?? It's own power supply provides 2A of current... Unless... the external PSU is dead? Maybe I should check that.

    Laptop or tablet for travel

This is what I ended up getting: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/asus-tp412-vivobook-flip-14-2-in-1-full-hd-touchscreen-laptop-512gbi5 It was on special for $1118 until about yesterday I managed to get it for that price, pity the sale has ended.
  8. Very nice. For my part it looks like all you will need, although maybe you'd want to add a monitor (if you don't already have one). Similar to the ASUS TUF Gaming I got - except mine was an i5 with 8Gb RAM for about $1100. I couldn't justify the extra cost with my wife on maternity leave and me out of work for a few months... although if I had to be honest with myself, the real reason might be that I don't game anywhere near as much as I'd like these days

    Regular laptop or 2-in-1 ?

Hmm, I ended up going for an ASUS which doesn't seem to have a specific pen tech supplied or used. The other option was Lenovo which do - some models come with the pen some don't. But the Lenovos had slightly worse specs for the price, and the Yoga range by some freakish reason don't have card reader or HDMI ports. This is the one: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/asus-tp412-vivobook-flip-14-2-in-1-full-hd-touchscreen-laptop-512gbi5 It was on special for $1118 until a day or two ago, which seemed like a great price. Mind you, I don't have a desktop, so this functions as both a work desktop computer and as my travel companion when I need to see clients.

Can you use a stylus of some sort on any touch screen?
  11. So what did you get? How has it turned out? I've always opted for a 15.6" for a gaming laptop - which I then end up using for home office stuff. But for me it's the right balance between portability and use. I don't often move it around but when I do I need to carry it all day. I find the screen size fine for gaming. My last purchase was in October and ASUS hit the sweet spot for value.
  12. Huh, that's weird. Why would the manufacturers bother? Just sell both drives cheaper and possibly make more money by saving on the enclosure?
  13. Uh, I actually can't remember now! I was going to use it for something, and my own copy proved too old to run on Win7. In the end I just installed 7zip. But for the life of me I can't remember what for... Probably emailing a large number of small files to someone.
  14. I honestly can't find any information on this on the Internet, which is a rare thing. The website is still up, with a copyright noticing ending in 2011. The latest news and s/w version is from May 2012. But no information on why development stopped or why there is no news of this anywhere, including on the vendor website? They even have sales and contact information up - I haven't tried it but presumably it doesn't work? The download links for JAR also don't work, but you can still download ARJ and ARJ32. Weird. Who's paying for all this? BTW, found out while Googling that ARJ Barker just announced his divorce!!
  15. I saw the Wikipedia article but didn't look much into the FreshPorts page. There doesn't seem to be much info on what happened to the original software. I suppose the port can be used in place of the original, since the original is time stamp limited even for the eval version?
  16. So I'm stuck and looking for advice and am checking everywhere I can... For ages I've wanted to get out of the corporate world and do something more variably challenging, and 5 years ago when I left my job at the time, I started a high school teaching degree. Well, I just finished and have done my penultimate prac, and been offered a job already in a small high school (175 students). OTOH, I really enjoyed my last contract (which I ended to do my prac) and have just been offered a role by an ex-senior VP for a pretty decent job with lots of fun travel, good money, a growing company, and it's overall pretty easy. So I'm freakin' torn - do I want to take the next step in a career I've progressed pretty far, or take a lot less pay to do something that's more immediately fulfilling? Anyone have any insights into that sort of thing? Pros and Cons list: https://ibb.co/RyMc9Np Pros and Cons List
  17. The long term pay doesn't really make a huge difference to me. I'm sure down the track I can change jobs or negotiate more pay based on being - male and - teaching maths or - teaching computing and engineering but have 20 years industry experience However it does make a difference to me short-term as my wife is on maternity leave right now and we used up a lot of money building a house and on loads and loads of birth-associated medical bills. On balance, I'm thinking if I can juggle the finances enough to stay alive, I'd be much happier doing the teaching. Overall I found it really fun interacting with teenagers. Even if they were shits I wasn't taking it personally because frankly, they're 12-18 and I'm f---ing ancient so I can't see any way they could really get under my skin.
  18. Fuck me that's insane. I don't think of myself as sheltered (in my adult life, I suppose) but I've never even thought of that, let alone experienced it.
  19. There is that... I mean I had one class during prac where my supervisor said, "You can't let students sit on desks, even during times when there's nothing for them to do, ESPECIALLY GIRLS." I'm like huh?? And he's like, "that girl you were asking to stop disengaging from the class, she shouldn't've been sitting on a desk, she was wearing a dress." Me: "Er... " Him: "Boys wear pants so it's not as much of an issue but they shouldn't sit on the desks either." Me: "Er... " Him: "You didn't notice?" Me: "I haven't looked at a student below the neck at all, I mean it hasn't seemed relevant." --- So yeah there is that which I won't enjoy. Apart from having to notice if students shirts aren't tucked in, I have to notice if their underwear is showing and figure out a delicate way of telling them to close their legs

    Happy Invasion Day

I agree. Federation Day is the logical choice but Jan 1st is already a holiday.

    Wrapped up like a douche

Does this count as a mondegreen? Apparently one hypothesis on the origin of the H in the exclamation, "Jesus H. Christ" is a mishearing of Jesus's middle name by school children reciting the Lord's prayer. "Our Father, who art in heaven, Harold be thy name... "

You couldn't find anything about yourself that was minority to give you cred? It's stupid but being Palestinian people take any pro-Jewish opinions. I have seriously, just because the stereotype is for Palestinians to hate Jews.

So if you minus the aid reduction from the massive increase in Israeli aid, I wonder what we get? But Trump isn't actually doing anything sensical. He wants to bring the troops home, but the talk from the White House is that if they pull out of Syria they would replace US troops with US funded mercenaries. That would cost even more for a probably worse result. He's all rhetoric and no substance. Edit: He also dismantled a perfectly good NNP treaty with Iran and reimposed sanctions for literally no reason other than it was an Obama achievement - risking an actual war with Iran as tensions escalate right now, as we speak. Yeah, the US has been shit for decades, I was responding to your comment wrt to the "current US administration".
