    SMS from PC (Android Devices)

Looks great. Got it installed easy enough and connecting via Wi-Fi isn't an issue. I will have a bit of a play and review it here at a later date.
  2. Hi there, I have done the google search for an app that allows you to send and receive SMS's from your PC and it has come up with a few results (EasySMS, Messenger Droid, PDANet...) but I wanted to get some users feedback/experiences or other suggestions. I would like to avoid apps that require the use of a website to send messages. I send a lot of SMS's while at my desk so it would be handy to be able to do this from my PC. Only other real requirement would be group messaging. Thanks in advance.

    C++ File Exists

Hi there, I could be wrong but this looks like a windows virtualization issue. Have you checked to see if your 'false positive' file exists in the users virtual store?

    Programmable Board

+1 to the Arduino. Got one for Christmas and it has been a lot of fun. There are heaps of demos and projects out there using the board and it is very easy to build your own version for projects that become a little more permanent.

    MKV vs MP4 container

XBMC is the main platform, windows x86 installation. Occasionally I might use them on the PS3 but the XBMC is the main playback device.

    MKV vs MP4 container

Hi there everyone, Basically, I am encoding all of my DVD's to use on a media player (and to protect the DVD discs) and I am not sure which container type to use. I am encoding the video using x264 and the audio I am preserving (I am not too worried about the file size). This means I have some files with stereo, some with AC3 and some with DTS. This may change as I attempt to encode some of the Blurays I have as well. Anyway, I am basically looking for the feature differences between the 2 container types. As I understand it MP4 didn't support AC3 until recently but that is not the case now. I believe the MKV container supports the new DTS HD and True HD formats but I am not sure about MP4. What do people out there use? Thanks in advance.

    Tagged File Server for Intranet

That looks like the sort of thing I was after. I will have a play with it now. Thanks!

    Tagged File Server for Intranet

Hi there all, Does anyone know of any software package that can be used to manage and search a file database? The background is that we have a large server in the office which contains thousands of files/drivers/various apps for use around the office. The problem is searching for an old app that people can't quite remember the name of. What I would like is something that allows you to upload files through say a web interface. The files can have multiple tags associated with them, that way when you come to search for the software you can essentially do it by tag or even a description. I know that most of these problems can be avoided by sorting the files in logical folders and stuff like that and we have tried that, but whenever someone new starts they still don't seem to be able to find anything, no matter how we organize it! Anyway, thought I would see if there was something out there.

    Google Desktop Search

We are stuck with XP at this point. May upgrade to Windows 7 MUCH later but things are pretty slow around here for that sort of thing.

    Google Desktop Search

Hi there all, Just got a new PC for the office and I was installing new software when I thought about using a desktop search engine. A few people I know swear by Google Desktop but when I tried it a few years ago it kept hogging my CPU (even when it wasn't indexing). Just wondering what views/opinions people have on these desktop search applications. Are they useful? What problems have people had? Trade-offs.. etc?

    Boot Manager

OK, the main problem with using a virtual environment is that we have had trouble getting our software/hardware working in a virtual environment. To give the complete story we are trying to test our software/hardware on all of our supported OS's. The software uses a hardware dongle for licensing (bit obsolete but not my call unfortunately). The problem is that the USB dongle didn't work on either VirtualBox or VMWare. It has been a while since I tested them (1.5 years approx) so things may have changed. USB support may be better now. Any comments?

    Boot Manager

Does anybody out there have any experience/recommendations for a good boot manager? I need to run a PC with the following bootable OS's: XP - 32 Bit Vista - 32 & 64 Bit Windows 7 - 32 and 64 Bit Server 2003 - 32 and 64 Bit Server 2008 - 32 and 64 Bit Currently I am just using managing the boot record myself and figure there as got to be a better way to do it. I did a quick search on the net and found a few programs but again was looking for someone who had some experience on them before I go stuffing around with it all again. Thanks in advance.

    Issue 104

First up, yeah I really like the new issue. The kit log is MUCH better. I use that section a lot as a guideline for a lot of the new systems I build. I also really liked the 'Babylon Project' article but I am having some problems. I have posted a new thread Here but I am not getting much of a response. Is there somewhere better to put it?

    Mencoder Encode

OK, I have a couple of new problems now. I am trying to encode the surround sound audio stream from the dvd. I found what I think is the option: -aid 130 which should switch it to the correct audio stream. When I try that with MPlayer it all seems to work fine. But when I use the same option with mencoder I just get it in stereo. Any suggestions? Also: is this the wrong place for this post?

    Mencoder Encode

Hi there all, I have been ripping and encoding for a while now and saw the article in the current issue 'The Babylon Project' and thought that was a great idea for some of my movie collections. So I thought I would follow along. Here is what I have tried: mencoder -chapter 2 -sws 9 -vf yadif,scale=1280:720,hqdn3d=6:5:8,unsharp=17x5:1,pp=ha:128:7/va/dr/al -oac copy -ovc x264 -x264encopts subq=9:b_pyramid:weight_b:8x8dct:me=umh:cabac:partitions=all:trellis=2:mixed_refs:direct_pred=auto:psy-rd=1.0,0.2:qp=16:threads=1:nodct_decimate:nofast_pskip:bframes=6:frameref=6 "D:\My Docs\My Videos\GOLDENEYESKU3\VIDEO_TS\VIDEO_TS.IFO" -o GE.avi At the moment it is just encoding the second chapter with no second pass as I am just testing it out. I have noticed that in the output for the script I get an error with the 'unsharp' filter. Something like this: Opening video filter: [expand osd=1] Expand: -1 x -1, -1; -1, osd: 1, aspect: 0.000000, round: 1 Opening video filter: [pp=ha:128:7/va/dr/al] Opening video filter: [unsharp=17x5:1] Couldn't open video filter 'unsharp'. <-- ERROR LINE Opening video filter: [hqdn3d=6:5:8] Opening video filter: [scale w=1280 h=720] Opening video filter: [yadif] This is actually one of the filters I am interested in. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? I am using the download 'MPlayer-p4-svn-29355' to obtain mencoder and the x264 codec is in the same directory. I am running the test on a windows xp 32 bit machine. I can include the rest of the output if it is helpful but it doesn't seem to be relevant. The resultant video isn't too bad but I would really like to get the whole thing working properly from the script file.
