  1. Terry made the documentary "Choosing to Die" earlier this year. I couldn't wait for an Aus rebroadcast, so I watched it at the youtube vid I'll put up below. It's 59 minutes long. Considering the topic and content (fair warning: they visit a legal euthanasia facility and witness a suicide/euthanisation/death on camera), I wouldn't be surprised if it's never aired in full here. I don't know if the youtube link is legal/legit - it doesn't look it. But it's been up for 5 months so I guess the BBC doesn't mind it being there. It's very sad. Not just due to the people he interviews who are and aren't choosing to die, but because of his own predicament with his failing memory and ability to do things like write (he's a prolific author). But I think it's an important topic and I think it's important that if you're going to support people's right to choose to end their life you should be as well informed about how it happens as you can be. Yes, it's biased towards legalising it. I don't want to wade into the topic with my own arguments, I want to see what people have to say. Preferably from people who are willing to actually watch it.

    Daisies or Daisys?

Daisys would be correct for more than one person/animal/thing other than a daisy that has been named Daisy. Otherwise, daisies.

    RIP Anne McCaffrey

She was 85? Jesus. I figured she was mid fifties at most. I was never a massive fan, but I enjoy reading her books on occasion. I'm sure she had a good life. But she will be missed.

    So, Obama hasn't been assassinated

Ron Paul would never support that system. His basic plan is to gut all governmental facilities (remove all foreign aid, severely reduce diplomatic avenues and return to the pre-WWII foreign policies, kill the Enivonmental Protection Agency, remove spending on low income housing, gut the FDA to reduce the checking up on big farm's auditing/prosecuting ability, cut medicaid spending by 35%, cut food stamps/dole style stuff by 35% etc. etc.). Then revert to the gold standard. Basically his plan is to revert to early industrial policies, where industry goes unchecked and the average person is left to fend for themselves.

Since it seems like it might blow out into an unnecessary semantic back and forth - I was using the common, everyday, carpet sale version of crazy/insane. I am not a clinical psychologist.

    So, Obama hasn't been assassinated

They are all nuts. Ron Paul was asked a question involving a sick patient without healthcare and if he should be left to die if the bill cannot be paid. He replied with a very libertarian response, the patient should be left to die and it was his/her own fault for not buying (or being able to afford) healthcare. Being a Republican debate he got a loud cheer. If I recall correctly, he didn't actually say it. He avoided the question. I think that after the crowd cheered for dead poor people he actually said he didn't think they should just die. I might be remembering that wrong though. *EDIT* Full quote: --------------- BLITZER: Thank you, Governor. Before I get to Michele Bachmann, I want to just — you’re a physician, Ron Paul, so you’re a doctor. You know something about this subject. Let me ask you this hypothetical question. A healthy 30-year-old young man has a good job, makes a good living, but decides, you know what? I’m not going to spend $200 or $300 a month for health insurance because I’m healthy, I don’t need it. But something terrible happens, all of a sudden he needs it. Who’s going to pay if he goes into a coma, for example? Who pays for that? PAUL: Well, in a society that you accept welfarism and socialism, he expects the government to take care of him. BLITZER: Well, what do you want? PAUL: But what he should do is whatever he wants to do, and assume responsibility for himself. My advice to him would have a major medical policy, but not be forced – BLITZER: But he doesn’t have that. He doesn’t have it, and he needs intensive care for six months. Who pays? PAUL: That’s what freedom is all about, taking your own risks. This whole idea that you have to prepare and take care of everybody – (APPLAUSE) BLITZER: But Congressman, are you saying that society should just let him die? PAUL: No. GUY IN CROWD: YEAH! *cheering/laughter* PAUL: I practiced medicine before we had Medicaid, in the early 1960s, when I got out of medical school. I practiced at Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio , and the churches took care of them. We never turned anybody away from the hospitals. (APPLAUSE) PAUL: And we’ve given up on this whole concept that we might take care of ourselves and assume responsibility for ourselves. Our neighbors, our friends, our churches would do it. This whole idea, that’s the reason the cost is so high. The cost is so high because they dump it on the government, it becomes a bureaucracy. It becomes special interests. It kowtows to the insurance companies and the drug companies, and then on top of that, you have the inflation. The inflation devalues the dollar, we have lack of competition. There’s no competition in medicine. Everybody is protected by licensing. And we should actually legalize alternative health care, allow people to practice what they want. --------------- Yeah, douchebag audience, Ron Paul not great but not wanting people to die.

Good god, Cain is stupid. Cybes - watch a single Republican debate. Or read a transcript. It's mind boggling.

    So, Obama hasn't been assassinated

This recent run of Republican candidates are, well, crazy. Just... crazy. Perry was made fun of for forgetting the third thing he was going to cut, but the statement itself was beyond crazy before he forgot what he was going to cut. He said when he came into power he was going to cut the education department, cut the commerce department and cut the... well, he forgot the last one. But really - a country that's having problems because it doesn't have the same industrial sector it used to fixing it's problems by eliminating the education department. Fucking crazy. Ron Paul and Mitt Romney are the sanest of the lot, and they're both freakin' lunatics.

    Anyone seen Middy?

I only just saw this thread. It was a little emotional roller coaster over a few minutes. Problem - suspense - worry - resolution. Nice and convenient for me! Glad he's physically OK.

    So, Obama hasn't been assassinated

While the "maybe we just don't know about it" stuff is interesting mental masturbation, the same applies to previous presidents. And yet we know about their attempts. Which brings me to the reason for the bump: http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/suspect...-192950611.html Yay! Obama joins the club as Jesus tries to shoot him!

  17. I've got a new place, and no microwave. Not a big deal, a working oven & stove mean the microwave isn't going to be used that much, but it's nice to have one when you need it. So I look at a couple of online listings of microwaves... and the price range surprises the hell out of me. From $70 all the way up to $1,400. Apart from a size difference there seems to be features for "convection" and "grill" and even "steam". I'm lost. And I can't stop picturing Adam Baldwin talking about them. Which doesn't help at all. Can someone break the practical applications of the differences down for me?

How a house cat might kill a human?

Yeah, you've got to be way more devious than simply clawing at people. Watch something like The Good Son or Mikey for inspiration - movies where the bad guy doesn't have a physical advantage. Being deceptively adorable and then making it look like they're in danger, and the human goes to help and wham - something heavy falls on their head. Getting stuck up a tree and when the human comes up to help, scratch spaz out and down the human goes. Mewl to draw a human to them, but they're positioned just right so that a deadfall isn't easily visible and down the human goes. Push a radio/electrical shaver/hairdryer into a bath. Stuff an electrical outlet full of hair in the night and burn the house down. Proper sneaky cat shit, none of that pure violent aggression nonsense.

    Travelling to Thailand

This is absolutely true, and applies to restaurants & activities as well. People are far more likely to report a bad experience than good one. Always READ the negative reviews. It's often clear people's reasons for voting low are ridiculous, and sometimes they're time specific. People are willing to give very low scores because the hotel itself was great, but there was construction noise from a nearby site that's probably long finished by the time you visit or there was a problem with a pervasive smell in the area due to sewage work that again, won't be there when you go - people are more than willing to give 1 star reviews based on temporary problems out of the hotels control. You'll also get bad reviews because people wanted a family hotel but booked a party hotel and vice versa - go with the type of hotel that matches the type of stay you want. People will also often max out at 3 stars for a 3 star hotel. They aren't rating it compared to other hotels in the same price range, they're comparing it to the 5 star places. So they only give it three. If you actually read their reviews they have no complaints and enjoyed the place. You'll also find the odd review that does truly sound like a genuine horrible experience that was poorly handled by the hotel. If there's only one or two of these in a sea of good reviews though it's incredibly unlikely it'll happen to you.

    ItsDirect.com.au - Stay clear...

Is anyone else waiting for a serf sockpuppet account to pop up supporting raistlin here? You had a bad experience. It was unfortunate. But the terms you yourself quoted indicate the stock listing isn't a guarantee and the rep didn't try and con you into store credit or a different product, offered the refund straight up... the lesson you learn here is to take them at their word when they say the stock listing is generally right, not always right, and that they have great service if something goes wrong.
