  1. The cops won't do jack shit. 25 years ago, they might have given 2 tosses about someone wanting to get a junkie out of their house. These days, if they did those types of callouts, that would be their sole line of business. Go the 2 weeks written. Beforehand, tell her to get valuables stored elsewhere. Once the 2 weeks are up, get the cops, because I doubt they'll do anything beforehand.

    Four day weekend coming up.

Bugger me, I didn't realise it was so close! I've got next week off, so no more work for 11 days here.

    Car problems

It's a pretty generic symptom and could be any of a dozen or more things. Pretty pointless speculating about it.

PMSL. It plays pretty OK. It'll just take getting used to. I haven't put enough time into it to give a definitive description, or list loves and gripes other than what I've already stated. Re performance - it seems on par or faster than Warhead on similar settings. My system C2D E6420, 4 gig DDR2-667, 512 meg 9800GT seems to handle it fine. Can't say I've experiened it chugging at all yet, although haven't exactly been in any shitfests with a dozen enemies and explosions and fires raging everywhere.

Gotta admit, I've almost spent as much time playing with the Editor as the game. NFI though if you can do stuff like caves/tunnels. Can't even seem to find a way to give a default spawn point.

What a twat. Obviously, they also need to impose some sort of IQ test as well.

Nice speeds. Really, the graphics seem rather sparse compared to a lot of modern games. Some of the physics are pretty cool. But, it's a real bummer that you can't pick up and throw stuff like the fuel barrels. Having said cool, there are also some lame bits. The control and weapons just don't have that feel which you get in a great FPS, and the vehicular control is just too detached. Another major annoyance is that having the map open just dominates the screen, which is accentuated by the clipped widescreen which was described earlier. With luck, a fix will come along that gives proper widescreen with increased horizontal FOV, rather than the vertically clipped affair it is now. Although it doesn't detract too much from the gameplay, other than the map issue I already mentioned. I've gotta give it time I suppose. It took me a while to really get into Far Cry, even longer for Crysis. Warhead is about the only FPS in years that I've gotten into and really enjoyed from the get-go.
  8. (Not a Volvo driver here). In my experience, the prime mover drivers are much the same as normal truckies. Volvo trucks are renowned for comfort, but I've heard that some blokes are embarassed to drive them. ed - You could almost ask the same question of Scania truck drivers. Saab (car) drivers are practically as bad as Volvo drivers, and Saab/Scania AFAIK is still one and the same company. /waits for chrisg to come in and tell us about the Gripen pilots
  9. I'd have to see a full picture to say whether I'd bang her or not. First priority she should have is to stop applying her lipstick Pauline Hanson style. FFS, overrun on facial products makes a woman look like a fucking spaz (for want of a better term).
  10. Congrats to both of you. Only just saw the thread... been kinda busy with other stuff.

The engine seems advanced in some ways and less so in others. There seems to be a lot less interaction with objects. Rather than warping to seating positions in cars etc, you have the full animation. He opens the door and sits, rather than just appearing in the driver seat. Moving to the gunner position he slides under the roll bar and lifts himself up. Fire propogation, of course. Possibly the main feature of the game engine. The game seems to use special effects much more like edge defocussing when you run and get tired, or get injuries or malaria symptoms. You can shoot smaller branches off certain types of trees. The grass and small plants react to you walking through them.

As it happens, I've got the next 10 or so days off from tomorrow... just gotta not overplay it and get sick of it. I think that it's a case of just getting used to the mechanics of the game. I can remember RTC Wolfenstein feeling weird at first, then later feeling like the most natural FPS ever. Same story afterwards with Far Cry then Crysis. Once playing becomes second nature, whatever game you play most becomes normal and everything else starts to feel weird. The Map Editor looks kick-arse. I had another play with it last night. Not sure if you can do stuff like tunnels, rivers with differing water levels, or put objects inside of buildings. I might whip up a quick demo level later. You can place practically any of the available vehicles and weapons on a user-generated map, so making it a good way to be able to show off most of the features of the game engine.

I think it'll have to be one of those games that "grows on you". My initial impressions were that the graphics are great so far as realism, but really I haven't seen a lot of action to the point you see in something like Crysis Warhead. The gameplay and control seem kinda stiff. For example, you can't run and sidestep maintaining the sprint speed like FC1, Crysis and so many other games. It really has the feel of something like the CoD games where you feel a bit like the player is on rails, rather than the fleet-footed feel you get from it's predecessors. I don't know if it was me stuffing up when I first set the options or if it was the defaults, but the gamma level was below half on the slider and just made it annoying to play. Setting it around the half level made it much more playable. Honestly, I think to assess the game properly, you have to get to know it, get over the perdy graphics because deep down, as with any game, it's the playability that will keep you coming back. At least it seems to have depth, and I haven't tried it with the other characters (I started with the second one available).

6 gig is fine for a 64-bit OS. I just got creamed over again. Rescued by a female buddy from a shitfight that started well but turned bad when I tried to heal while under fire. Then, got a mission from a radio station, went for a walk and engaged a bad guy in a gun truck and got run over. Strange thing... although it's a coldish night here, my card is barely working a sweat so far as rising temps go, and it was hitting 65+ in Crysis last night

You cop damage from your own fires. Another thing getting used to is the lack of nanosuit :P Very glad though that you can just seem to jump into any vehicle and take it, the sprint mode seems to tire after a few seconds (malaria). I'm thinking I might have to start again. I've managed to blow up both ammo caches I've come across. Also, I think it might only let you pick up ammo relevant to the weapons you're carrying (or maybe the ones your checked out on). I also had a play with the Map Editor earlier. Looks pretty easy to use, it renders in realtime, so you can just move around it and adjust terrain and add stuff.

Agreed with a couple of points in the IGN review linked earlier... - the vehicles I've driven so far (little car, pickup with mounted gun) don't have much "feel" about them. But, Crysis was a similar story, the road-going vehicles didn't have the same feel as the ones in Far Cry, these ones feel more detached. - I had a gunfight with several enemies just then. One just walked straight past me, seemingly totally ignorant to my presence. It's kinda "weird" in that there's much less situational awareness to your surroundings, like the active radar in FC, Crysis etc. I tried having the crosshair on, it seems to give an aim cue by turning red when there's an enemy in sight. The other strange thing, somewhat annoying is that if you go inside huts, the light level drops to something resembling Doom 3. Possibly a case of needing to jack the gamma up a notch or two? Although, I've noticed with games that use HDR that they tend to have very bright/very dark areas. I went to "Mike's Bar". Buggered if I could find the person who's supposed to help with your health (malaria?) situation. Also a bit confused as to the weapon containers, I'm guessing you might need to buy them to be able to keep extra weapons available to pick up from safe-houses... dunno, I've only bothered to RTFM to the tune of a few pages.
  17. Cabbage? Wasn't half a cabbage the weekly wage for soldiers for a while? Although that was supposedly Russia, and as I understand it, Ukraine went it alone because they wanted out of the basket-case situation most of the rest of the former republic was in.

Maxxed out, 8x AA. I don't think the benchmark has any higher setting than this: * Average Framerate: 12.56 * Max. Framerate: 19.87 * Min. Framerate: 7.90 The Ranch Small bench pans over a village with flame propogation and exploding barrels. I had RivaTuner keeping an eye on the CPU, it hovers near 100% for most of the benchmark.

Hot diggity, this is gonna be hard. No radar, more realistic weapon sightings. It feels more like one of the CoD games than a Far Cry or Crysis type game. One nice thing is that it seems to load quickly - doesn't spend a rediculous amount of time checking the protection, and, although probably sitting in the cache, the initial level load is fast. When first starting though, it was kinda annoying having the scripted scene that seemed to go forever, and all you could do was move your field of view.

I read elsewhere it's a watered down DRM. It doesn't seem to care about me having Alcohol120 installed with a Virtual CD drive.

http://users.tpg.com.au/rybags/videos/FC2a-s.avi XVid 4.5 meg I don't have a great deal of space, so had to make it a short one at crap bitrate. Also, it's from my TV out, so it's a cropped view of what's on my LCD widescreen.
