Microsoft Police aka Microsoft Software Audit

Had one earlier this year, pretty simple but a bugger to get the data they wanted from us as my predicesor was a bit slack with record. No problems in the end. They did try winge about CAL's but in the end we're sorted...

    SQL Query Help

I have control of the schema as i am busby building this system to assist with some reporting. Basically it is a crosstab query that i would use in Excel, but am putting it into a VB program and throught i would try get the SQL query to do the work as opposed to loop throught the result set in VB. If not it's ok as i have the VB way working but wanted to give SQL a crack.

    SQL Query Help

    Hi All, i was wondering if anyone could assist with query. I'm not sure if i can do it in SQL, but going to try Table 1 Destination, Call Type, Cost Table 2 Destination, Classification Table 1 will have Multiple instances of the destination and of the call type Table 2 will only have one record for destination and clasification The relationship between table 1 and 2 is the destination What i would like to try extract is a result similar to below | Clasification 1 | Clasification 2 | Clasification 3 | Clasification 4 | Destination 1 | Call Type 1 | SUM(cost) | SUM(cost) | SUM(cost) | SUM(cost) | Destination 1 | Call Type 2 | SUM(cost) | SUM(cost) | SUM(cost) | SUM(cost) | Destination 1 | Call Type 3 | SUM(cost) | SUM(cost) | SUM(cost) | SUM(cost) | Destination 2 | Call Type 1 | SUM(cost) | SUM(cost) | SUM(cost) | SUM(cost) | Destination 2 | Call Type 3 | SUM(cost) | SUM(cost) | SUM(cost) | SUM(cost) | Destination 3 | Call Type 1 | SUM(cost) | SUM(cost) | SUM(cost) | SUM(cost) | I have been able to do my SQL query to bring the data i need into a table, but am not sure if i can even do what i want with the clasification. Appreciate any help. Stephen

Network Switches with some fiber questions

You are right Brains, but i am busy doing research, at this moment there is no important "need" but i am interested in the information. Asking atomic, doing reading as much as i can, but still need to have some idea in case there are issues. Unfortunately i don't have the luxury to step "away" as i am it at the moment. Also right MS, Simple, small domain, about 50 odd workstations across site, maybe another 20 or so portable devices (scanners, AP ect). Fibre is mainly used as it's the easiest way to go the couple hundred meter's between each building. At this stage i am not planning on making any changes to the network as i don't feel i have the knowledge to make them but am still curios as to the best plan of attack. Hoping one of my uni subjects covers networking though...

Network Switches with some fiber questions

Thanks for the Reply's. In the offices there are less than 24, and again it's fairly light network, TS, email, internet. so nothing major. I can't join the fibre as the reason it breaks to copper is because we need networking in that building. For switches with SFP ports, if i say got a 24 port, with 2 SFP ports and put fibre modules in them, i could potentially have the fibre from the building a on one, and the fibre heading to the building c on the other with copper in building b? Thats pretty much what would suit my needs at the moment as thats the main failure point we are having.
  6. Hi all, was wondering if i could pick the brains of some of the atomic guru's out there regarding networking. At our site, we have multiple buildings with them all being joined with fiber, the fiber goes from building A to Building B, then goes through a converter to copper, then back to fiber to go to building C. We would like to remove the abundance of failure points and was wondering if anyone could assit with what sort of switch i would need to look at if i wanted to have fiber in, and then fiber and CAT out? The other one is that in one point we have one fiber in, and 5 fiber out, but because of the way it was run the one in is broken into copper, and then 5 x converts back to fiber, is there such a thing as a fiber switch? Lastly, i need to get some new switches for the offices, would a unmanged switch be the best or would i be better off looking towards managed L2/L3 switches, What is the difference with the l2/l3 as i have no idea? If possible links to products would be awesome. thanks Stephen

    Server Virtualisation

Thanks for the Reply's. The thing that will sway it for me would be some information on how to backup my machines. I can see the "theory" but struggling a bit find some good information on the "practice"

    Server Virtualisation

Thanks for the Reply guys, grazer thanks for the information, i will look into it. Unfortunately being in a "rural" area the internet down here is a little average at best. iamthemaxx, i am thinking that taking a snapshot of the host is what im looking at. I already do the "data" backup in the server, but created Disk images every night and back them up, that way i can get my data out or can restore the whole server if required. Using ether VM/Hyper-V how would i schedule it to do a backup of the VM image so that if required i can restore it but also if required i can put that image on another server if shit hits the fan. CptnChrysler - Thanks for the link. Ideally im looking to work with VMWare or Hyper-V for the reason that i have two mates who are local tech's working in those industries, so it's a great source of information if i run into strife.

    Server Virtualisation

Thanks for all the Reply's. Main reasons to virtualise is firstly to look into the new tech but also minimize the hardware amount and upgrade costs. we have a few older 2003 servers here that don't work very hard but i can't get rid of them. The clustering/fallover isn't as critical as the servers aren't production specific. The main thing for the backup is the same as my current, i grab disk images every day that i can either extract all required data, or if corruption occurs can restore that disk image. I know i can do my backup from within my vM, but think maybe backing up the files in the host might be quicker.

    Server Virtualisation

Hi All I've got a new server at work that im playing with and would like to have a crack at some Virtualisation. I was having a play with Hyper-V at home and fount it to be quite easy to use. Been looking at ESXi and its also pretty. Was wondering what the recommendations are from the community? Some more info: * I work in a purely windows enviroment at this stage. The only linux machine is a Virtual Ubuntu Proxy server. * I would like a decent (preferable free) backup solution for which ever one i use * First step is to have one server and progress to having a secondary for fall over. Thanks and appreciate any information Stephen

    Reading Serial String

Hi all, ive modified my code as per the article but running into a problem where the program is "freezig" then it stop the read from the serial port. was wondering if anyone had any ideas? im assuming its going to have to do with the delegate but unsure how it all works to try troubleshoot Private Function stopread() Try lblMessage.Text = cbbCOMPorts.Text & " Closed" serialport.Close() btnconnect.Enabled = True btndisconnect.Enabled = False 'Timer1.Enabled = False Catch ex As Exception MessageBox.Show(ex.ToString) End Try End Function '------------------------------------------- Private Sub DataReceived( _ ByVal sender As Object, _ ByVal e As System.IO.Ports.SerialDataReceivedEventArgs) _ Handles serialport.DataReceived txtDataRecieved.Invoke(New _ myDelegate(AddressOf updateTextBox), _ New Object() {}) End Sub '------------------------------------------------------ ' Delegate and subroutine to update the Textbox control '------------------------------------------------------ Public Delegate Sub myDelegate() Public Sub updateTextBox() readdata = serialport.ReadByte With txtDataRecieved .AppendText(readdata.ToString.PadLeft(3, "0"c).PadRight(3, " "c) & " ") .ScrollToCaret() 'If readdata = "003" Then ' .AppendText(vbCrLf) 'End If End With With txtBinaryData .AppendText(Chr(readdata)) End With If readdata = "042" Then goodread = 1 End If If readdata = "003" And goodread = 1 Then stopread() End If End Sub

    Reading Serial String

Hi all and happy silly season Im back onto this project after a detour. I have modified my code and used DEVX as a refrence to re-do my code as i wasn't happy with what i had. I modified it a bit while playing to put it on a time but im finding that the program is lagging way behind my device. It could be finished sending and the program is still trying to print it all to screen. Im not sure how the delegat works so if anyone could explain it would be great. the timer code is below, im a little unsure on how to get it up to speed. What i would like it to do is read untill it reads a "valid" input the stop the reading process. i will also need to write a second set for the other comm port which is sending completely different data structure. Thanks for any help Private Sub Timer1_Tick(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Timer1.Tick Dim temp As Byte = serialport.ReadByte Label1.Text += 1 With txtDataRecieved .AppendText(temp.ToString.PadLeft(3, "0"c).PadRight(3, " "c) & " ") If temp = "003" Then .AppendText(vbCrLf) End If End With txtBinaryData.AppendText(CByte(temp)) If temp = "042" Then goodread = 1 End If If temp = "003" And goodread = 1 Then stopread() End If End Sub

    Reading Serial String

Use VB.net to read the binary data, look for the character manually, note the binary representation, and then tell VB to look for that character. Rob. Thanks for the reply, any chance of getting some help regarding this as im still very much in the beginning of this sort of programming work. I'm Using API code to get the serial data as it was the only way i found initially (any suggestions are welcome). the string this returns is in the format: PASS: S35X190D8.5F237L641E9.72R16.98P FAIL: S35X120D4.0F147L230E12.42R9.65 with the character at the end. So how can i read the binary data, what am i looking for? Thanks

    Reading Serial String

Hi all Im doing some programming where i am reading data from a serial device. At the end of the string in hyper terminal im getting a "square" symbol which i assume is the device telling me it's done sending. How can i look for that in a VB.net program so that i can close my connection to the COM port? Regards Stephen

    Linking Multiple Networks

Yea, thanks Redhatter, I have got the other device working again, ended up wiping it and reloading all the settings, but it will fail again.. ideally would perfer a hardware device so i dont have to have this machine sitting somewhere. The device i have now is a LOCKDOWN-SME from alloys. Anyone able to recommend something else?
