    What of Atomic?

I was browsing Kotaku today and the article showing the last cover reminded me to say something about this event. Times change and so must we all as nothing is ever the same as it once was. Ever since I was able to afford a subscription I had been handing over my money happily to a home grown crowd of dedicated enthusiasts who loved what they did and showed it every single month. Even if there were elements that I found little interest in there was always something good in there or a bold experiment being tried and that was the part I really liked about it all (The uber Linux box project being one standout moment or Atomic Live being another). It really felt like a representation of the Australian technical enthusiast crowd, not taking itself as serious as PC Authority or as narrowly focused as Hyper of PCPowerplay and that was what helped it build such a community behind it which still continues to endure as you can see the evidence all around you. You did us proud Atomic, you did yourselves proud. Every single one of you from editor, to writer, to designer and contributor. Specifically to hawkeye, let nobody say you didn't do everything you could. It may not be ideal, but I think you have done the very best you could with what you had. All the best for the future you crazy Ultramarine *thumps breastplate*. Courage and honour.
  2. Zombie Rion hangs his head in shame about losing touch with this one. However even in this late hour all is not lost as there is still a month to go. I would certainly like to make another effort this year with any interested Brisbanauts in honor of making Brisbane once again and officially the zombie capital of the world. If you have any love for the genre you must lend your strength in making this happen. I think its a bit late for working out a group theme and I would say just come up with something you want to and then we shall assemble at the park on the day like the first time out. If a better assembling idea comes forward that can be updated (I live way out of town so I am not even entertaining that possibility). If you can't do this for yourselves, do this for Brisbane and if you can't do it for that well I have no idea what motivates you and perhaps you're better off. I also need to come up with a new blood formula. Its so sweet but it just doesn't cut it and I'll be damned if I use chocolate.

    C&C getting a reboot?

Someone say the magic words C&C? I think the C&C franchise still has legs in it but not in the directions it has been taken in the last few incarnations. I would actually really like to see an original C&C reboot with tweaking the plot (as in ignoring everything that happened past C&C 3, writing it out of the story) and obviously the engine. However somehow I don't see that happening and if they are going to take the series anywhere it would be with Generals but we won't know until they give us more details, but on that premise alone I would say 'hell yes!'. I also agree that the Red Alert franchise still has life in it as it was built on the premise of going bigger and crazier they have not yet driven that idea into the ground just yet. But Generals is the strain of C&C that has been the least milked despite being one of the most successful aspects. Need more info but certainly my interest has been kindled.

    [BNE] Mt Cootha Botanical Gardens

Smallest Brisbanaut session to date. That said Bowiee and I had a good discussion and I hung out in the gardens all afternoon and enjoyed the scenery so no problems on my end for that. That said I suppose I should packup the eepc and head off before the light completely fails here.

    Make it sound good

Unfortunately you cannot buy the mp3's through Amazon here. Well you can if you want to be clever about it with proxies and VPN's, but I have an upcoming Amazon order that I am just going to add the CD to for a few extra dollars over the mp3's.

    Make it sound good

It might not be cutting edge news but it is still interesting none the less that the London Philharmonic Orchestra has been giving their renditions of popular video game music. You can check it out on Kotaku right now for the next week. I think it is a good thing for a few reasons; giving legitimacy to video games as a platform not just for children and creating some damn good music from popular titles that take them beyond what they were before. I am no musicophile but I was certainly impressed with what they had done and I would like to see more of it, heck I would go to a concert with this on offer. I especially like their renditions of Mass Effect 2's 'Suicide Mission' and Halo 3's 'One Final Effort' and was pleasantly surprised at what they did with the Tetris theme. I certainly will be grabbing a copy of these.

[BNE] Zombie Walk - Zombie Pirates!

No official tally of attendees yet. The site suggests over 8000 that could be officially counted while with pickups maybe 20,000. Not a bad effort at all Brisbane and lets see that Guinness World Record shattered so Brisbane becomes the zombie capital of the world. I want to see that on a sign as you drive into the city or arrive at the airport.

No worries, I am more surprised that you could scream so girlishly and so loud... and keep it up all afternoon. Bigger write up with pictures later.

    Gold Coast: EB Games Expo

It wasn't a bad day out. The problem was as outlined -lines. If you didn't go with a few people to chat and muck around with it would have been very boring. You had a massive line to get internet pre-ordered tickets, which then turned into an even more massive line that extended several times the length of the expo arena to get in the doors. Then the lines for the exhibits which could be several hundred people deep. So you standing in line to get a ticket, to stand in line to get into an area where you could stand in line and possibly play a videogame. I made a list of the exhibits I wanted to see and ranked them in priority and chased them so I wouldn't get distracted. Even though was probably halfway in the line was still able to make it to the EA booth and get in line for Mass Effect 3 and be the first 15 or so to play the game so that was fortunate. That was probably the most fun playing experience I had on the day, running around with an omni-tool stabbing people while everyone else hid behind corners and shot. After that on the list was BF3 but looking at the 200 people lining up to play it and the fact it was the single player on an xbox360 it was decided it wasn't worth it following the beta. After that came Batman Arkham City which was possibly the longest line we were in of the day, about an hour and 15 mins. The group I was in actually ran out of things to talk about for a while so we resorted to smartphones/tablets and surfed the free wifi. They certainly are valuable convention devices which have now been cemented equipment to always bring. Arkham City was E3 code which seemed to be suffering from performance issues when there was too much on the screen and suffering some significant slowdowns, hopefully that is polished up. I may have also ended up on the news but I wasn't home to check but the 9 news people were filming while we played. After that to stretch our legs we wandered around all the exhibits and picked up as many posters as we could to get some value out of the ticket price as the day was already at 12:30 and only 2 games viewed while every line had at least an hour wait behind it (Skyrim2hrs for a 2.5 min video - no thanks). Need an ME3, BF3, Bioshock Infinate and a Skyrim poster. There were more places offering posts but they ran out fast and you saw people around hauling up to 10 of the things. Following that was lunch. All the nearest places were packed, for example the line to the nearby Maccas had a line out the door. The next door BP station had nobody and a special deal on pies, sold. The park next to the convention center was perfect for a little picnic. Following lunch went back in and they started an event in the main hall so we took that as an opportunity to play some games while most people were in there. Sonic Generations, Rage, Halo Anniversary presentation all got knocked over and I foolishly enough went to the Modern Warfare 3 exhibit which was an hour wait and it was 10 minute presentation on how awesome the COD Elite service will be. I felt totally cheated on that. That took us up to about 3:30 when everyone was coming back from the event and it was decided all the main things had been done and to get out before the traffic stated. The problem was the main booths could only accommodate 4-8 players at most and some of the big names there were only movies or presentations, there were a fair few things there that were just not worth lining up for. Not a bad day out.

    Gold Coast: EB Games Expo

Tripping down on Saturday morning for the Saturday daytime event. I would have preferred Sunday to see the cosplay but everyone is busy Sunday and I am not cool enough to go by myself.

So it is. I had totally spaced on that date but the Sunday is still free so I can do both. Of course not all of us are integral to the running of the event as JV so we can do as such.

[BNE] Zombie Walk - Zombie Pirates!

Personally I vote for a meetup at your place (or another place if someone sticks their hands up) so we can take our time putting on the makeup and stuff and have something like 28 days later or dawn of the dead going. As you have said the last two years have been rushed with the meetup in the park. But it was a good point you mentioned to have someone at the other end be ready with some storage space to chuck any non essential zombie gear into their boot and return for it later.
