  1. Hi folks, I need to replace my kid's computer. He's had my old P4, Radeon 9600, 1GB DDR machine for a couple of years now and it's time to upgrade. For one, the P4 makes a crazy stupid repetitive beeping and doesn't boot (perhaps the ram is borked?) and he's gonna need something to play Portal 2 next year as well. That in mind, he is only 7 and money is tight so I'm after bang for buck. So I am well out of the loop with hardware, but a quick poke around on the MSY website (they are in Canberra now) came up with the following: CPU Intel Core i5-760 2.8Ghz LGA 1156 209 Motherboard Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3 P55 LGA1156 USB3 DDR3 129 RAM TEAM 6GB Kit (2Gx3) DDR3 1333 82 Storage WD SATA 1TB HDD 62 GPU Gigabyte 1GB 6850 PCI-E VGA Card 203 Monitor Acer 21.5" G225HQBD 5ms DVI 144 Case Antec 300 Three-Hundard Gaming Tower without PSU 55 PSU Corsair VX-550 ATX Power Supply Unit 97 Keyboard Logitech Ultra Flat USB Keyboard 19 Mouse existing MX510 0 OS existing Win7 0 Total 1000 Please excuse the shitty formatting. Now unfortunately pretty much all of those items are out of stock on MSY's website, but it was just a bit of a guide anyway. While I do like the idea of picking up the hardware locally, I would be ok to use PC casegear or U-mart if I had to. I'd probably even go to the computer market (that's how tight money is) but I like the idea of *some* customer support in case of faulty products. I have found u-mart to be pretty average with service but I imagine they are all better than the computer markets. I also came up with a $600 machine just to see what I could get really cheap, but I want this to still be playing new games in a few years time. I don't expect bitchin frame-rates in 5 years, but I'd like to still be able to buy my kid a game and not be too concerned about it working or not. So how is that build? What would you swap, keeping it under a grand?
  2. thanks guys I really appreciate the advice. One the cooler, I don't think I'll bother with anything aftermarket for now. I won't be overclocking the CPU so the stock one should be fine. If we do overclock it in the future I'll look into a cooler then. I probably won't need an extra drive either to be honest. We use a NAS for all our home media so the drive in this box will be just for OS and software, games etc. Oh and homework of course. He is indeed a lucky little man. He's got a pretty neat little pad. It will be much better with the new computer, LED TV, networked blu-ray player etc. It makes up for him not having a yard to play in :(

Software to clone a HDD for backup?

Or if you're not using Windows 7 you can use Acronis. I use it to back up a system image of my netbook (WinXP) every now and then. I used it to restore to XP after a period of using Win7 that didn't really go to plan. The recovery from Acronis went perfectly.
  4. thanks mate. that makes sense to me now.
  5. Nesquick you rock. I've always appreciated your opinions and knowledge. I'm stoked you spotted my thread and took the time to help me out. Enough pissing in nessy's pocket... moving on... So it'd be a crazy messed up world if everybody just did what they were told and never questioned anything... so... Core i3... I thought they were really entry level cpus... we have one in my wife's super cheap Compaq laptop so I always thought they were a bit pov but now I'm looking at the details on PCCG I see it's a pretty decent little processor. I'm a bit puzzled about the GPU bit though...? Why does it say dual core + GPU and have a GPU clock speed (733MHz)? Ok I just found that H55 chipset has onboard graphics and they use the GPU that is built in to the i3 CPU? The Samsung HDD has a 32MB cache while the WD Green 1TB ($65) has 64MB...? Oh but I think I just answered my own question the Samsung drive spins at 7200rpm. Being "green" and low power... I assume that the WD spins at 5400? I'll confirm that but yeah I reckon that'd be the case. Speaking of cases.. that is a small one. I do like Antec cases... I have a P180 that I have been very happy with. BUT.. is the PSU in that case pretty decent? Will it still cope if I add another HDD further down the line... Oh and an optical drive. I forgot to get one of those. I should add one of them. I might swap the motherboard for the Gigabyte GA-H55M-D2H for $99 since a) I am familiar with Gigabyte (and quite happy with my P35-DS3-P which has happily ran my Q6600 at 3.2Ghz for a little over 3 years). And b) it has HDMI. The kid is getting a TV for his birthday/xmas at the end of January and it will be within reach of a 5m HDMI cable. I have no idea why he'd want to connect his computer to a 22" TV instead of his 24" monitor but he might one day.... In fact we might have to rotate monitors and give him my Samsung 22" (which will nicely match his Samsung 22" TV) and I could have the 24" Nesquick has quoted for me. So if I swap the motherboard and add a lite-on DVDRW I get $1052 or $1092 if we decide to get a blu-ray drive. Plus shipping Standard Shipping (averages 2-5 days) $43 Express Shipping (averages 1-2 days) $105 Pretty frikken sweet computer Nesquick. I owe you a big favour. As for the 3D support, that card seems to have a lot more going for it that just 3D. That said, we have a 3D TV in the lounge room. I'm pretty sure the kid wouldn't mind if we dragged his computer out to plug it into the big screen if we found a 3D game/product that we wanted to try :)

    PS3 Audio Issue

is your TV capable of outputting 5.1 over the optical? I read somewhere recently that even high-end Samsung TV's could only output 2 channels with the optical out. No that's bullshit. That was using ARC not optical. Forget what I said about Samsung, but it might be worth checking that your TV and your sound system are all capable of doing 5.1. Oh and I think you need to select more formats on the PS3 and not just DTS. Not everything you play/watch/listen to will be DTS. My PS3 is connected to a Yamaha RX-V567 which (I think) is capable of all the audio formats around and I have the PS3 on HDMI and 'auto' and all of the audio formats are selected, but if I choose 'manual' instead of 'auto' I can pick and choose the formats. I think you need to select more formats here, not just DTS.

Shintaro HD DVB-T set top box

JB has a few HD boxes for 80 - 100 bucks. The TEAC for 99 has USB input for media playback, which is pretty neat for a cheap STB. Mind you I think I saw a HD box at Dick Smith for closer to 50 bucks. Could've actually been SD though... I'm not sure.

Audio Issues with HDMI on laptop

I sell televisions on the weekend and last weekend I had a customer (young tech savvy kid about 19) who told me his Sony television won't accept HDMI audio from his computer. Not sure what mobo he had, but he said the mobo had HDMI and it's a known issue with certain Sony TVs. He mentioned 3rd party programs that fix the problem for him, but I sold him a bigger & better TV anyway :D Have you googled the TV model number along with "PC HDMI audio" or similar? That might get you onto one of said 3rd party programs?

    Weeds Season Six

Yeah I didn't hate 4 & 5 like a lot of people seem to... SUre it was different to the earlier seasons, but it was still a great show... Season 6 airs on August 16th according to that trailer... Uncle Teevee Torrentz always has great reception at his joint....

    sad DS Lite

My 7 year old has played the crap out of his DS Lite over the last 12 months. It was bought near new but has no warranty. I've bought him a new one and inherited his old one and I'd like to make it work, but without spending too much money. There is a dude at Woden Westfield who reckons he'll fix it for $70 but I'd rather not spend that cause I've got way more important priorities atm. I could also send it to Oz Mod Chips, who will replace the slot 1 for 70 bucks. It will read (and load) a cartridge if I push the cartridge in really hard but as soon as I release it loses the connection and freezes up. I've tried multiple cartidges, including brand newies, so it's definately the DS not a dirty cartridge. Does that sound like it's dirty inside and could be cleaned with a cleaning cartridge? If so, do they even exist? I can't find any but I dd read about them somewhere...? Or maybe I could open it and clean it with alcohol? Is that an option? Hints, advice, recommendations? Please and thank you!

    Leave Jessi Alone!

11 year old scene kid talks it up on the www... the www responds with lolz... http://www.news.com.au/technology/jessi-sl...0-1225894080075 FROM a child's foulmouthed rant to police protection and death threats - one US family is learning the hard way about the dangers of giving their 11-year-old daughter a computer. Just three days after Jessi Slaughter posted a video of herself on YouTube, her home is being bombarded with deaths threats and her family has been placed under police protection. All because last Thursday, Jessi woke up at midnight and decided to post a video on YouTube called "Haters... Piercing... StickyDrama =D". Watch Haters... Piercing... StickyDrama =D here and note, despite the fact Jessi is just 11, the language is extremely graphic. Jessi was angry that she'd been linked to a sexual relationship with Blood on the Dancefloor lead singer Dahvie Vanity at the tween gossip channel StickyDrama, and she let fly at those responsible for spreading the rumours. In one of the safer-for-work messages to her "haters", Jessi claims she'll be "poppin' a glock in your mouth and makin' a brain slushie" and tells them all to "suck her nonexistent p...s". "Suck it and get AIDS and die," she says. Her response was not a YouTube hit by any measure, barely passing the 100,000 mark, but it was enough to attract the troublemakers on a website notorious for pranks, 4chan. One 4chan troller - net users who specialise in baiting victims - decided to take up the cause of making life hell for Jessi and her family. His first step was to pose as a police officer and ring her mother!, Dianne, claiming that the man who was the target of her daughter's "brain slushie" threat had disappeared. From there, as Jessi's internet fame spread, Anonymous and other users began posting her personal details on the net, including her phone number and home address. They spammed her Facebook, Twitter and MySpace accounts and had pizzas sent to her house. And then the trollers got their prize - 11-year-old Jessi Slaughter sobbing on YouTube and a her extremely net-unsavvy father's attempts to threaten the stalkers, much to their delight. "You dun goofed up" immediately became YouTube's most popular post of the day, and introduced several choice terms such as "I've backtraced it" and "consequences will never be the same". It's now pushing the two million views mark ... and Jessi Slaughter's family home is under siege. Jessi herself is under a court order not to access the internet for at least three days. There's a criminal investigation into the video of Anonymous pretending to be a policeman. And sadly, it's not over yet for Jessi and her family. Her mum has told Gawker about a "slew" of death threat phone calls to the family home. "We've had may, many death threats," she told Gawker. "We're afraid to leave the house. We're afraid to go to bed. "I wan't my life back. I want my daughter's life back." She claims she doesn't go on the computer and hasn't seen Jessi's original rant. But it seem the family will face the consequences of their daughter's foul mouth for some time yet. Today, "Jessi Slaughter given PCP by her father" is a trending topic on Google and all the popular social networks. Needless to say, it looks like yet another hoax. And finally, the trollers will be proud of their piece de resistance. The latest internet rumour trending up the charts? "Jessi Slaughter has killed herself" - an "AP story" as seen on Tumblr and linking to a tired viral video of a Russian singer. iPhone 3GS battery problems

bugger bugger bugger. A replacement will have the new baseband that can't be jailbroken afaik :( (Not with Blackra1n anyway) Maybe I should wait till iPhone 4 is out and then claim... Do ya think I'd get an iPhone 4? or nah... they'd give me a reconditioned 3GS wouldn't they...
  16. Hi folks, Twice in the last week, I have found my 3GS has switched itself off with no battery life. Both times this has happened, the battery life had been showing 30 - 40% only 20 minutes earlier. I've gotten no warnings. It's just died. Now I know the battery life on these suckers isn't great, but my phone is about 6 or 8 months old and it's always been *ok* on the battery. I turn wifi off if I'm not using it. Same with bluetooth. i tend to run it down to 10% before i charge it and I do my best to only ever take if off the charge when it's 100% full. Yes the phone is jailbroken (Blackra1n), but it has been jailbroken since the day I got it, while this issue is new. It's running 3.1.2 (and has done since i got it I think). Not sure I can think of anything else that might be relevant... Do any of you smarties have any clues as to why this is happening? My googling isn't bringing up much helpful information :/ Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Leave Jessi Alone!

Its a good thing people fuck up an 11 year olds life? 11 year olds shouldn't be getting on youtube threatening to make brain slushies outta haters with glocks.... and when they do... they're asking for some shit.... I don't think anyone's life should be terribly 'fucked with' but it'll learn her not to make dumb threats on the www.... Funniest post I've read in a long time. POTM. funnier than kicking the sandcastles over in your vagina....

it's a mildly amusing story about the goings on of the internet... it made me laugh.. I assumed it might make others laugh... Is there some important criteria needed to be met before posting shit in the Green Room?

Who would be to blame for this?

My then-girlfriend bought me a Logitech cordless keyboard and mouse set for xmas in about 2002... back when sets like that were around the $300 mark.. not 60 bucks like they are today.. Anyway we had to return it to DJ's / Myer in Queen St Brisbane (one or two of the keys weren't working) where they happily swapped it over for another set straight off the shelf. I don't recall why, but I opened the box while we were at a pub in the mall down the road and found the keyboard was not the fancy black wireless one, but a generic white Logitech keyboard... Someone had obviously done something dodgy and the staff had not even noticed. Fortunately for me we found this before heading home to (then) North Straddie. Also fortunately for me the staff believed me, despite my being a feral hippy with dreadlocks that probably smelled like a keg of Bulmers cider when I brought the set back that second time. I've got a second job these days, in retail, where everything gets checked when a customer returns something. K-Mart staff in the OP (along with Myer / DJ's Queen St staff) must be pretty slack to just take boxes back without checking the contents.

    The Milkman

That's what I thought the thread was going to be about when I read the title. Probably my all time favourite of David Firth's work. OP was kinda funny. I think 2 is getting a bit old to still be on the boob, but as you say, milk is expensive..... (wait.... is that part of the joke?)

    sad DS Lite

Ok cool. I'll open it up. I'll take it with my to Jaycar and grab some little triwing screwdrivers since I'm pretty sure I don't have any. If i stuff it up it's no huge loss. He's got a brand new replacement. I saw the Mario one in trademart and was very tempted but (my wife) decided against it. The kid's aunty & cousin has a red Mario DS. They play together a lot and he didn't want one the same as hers. I got a 3 year replacement warranty on the new one too.... Are they relatively simple to open, fiddle with, then close up? Maybe I should hold out till I have some spare cash and... nah... I just knocked up the wife... I'm never gonna have any spare cash ever again....

    Freeman

As funny as this post was at the time... it seems Console Gaming was the perfect place for this thread :/ Why they hyped us up with a HL logo and the name Freeman I don't know.... I know it was doubtful but the excitement that I drummed up in my head, anticipating the announcement of HL3 really was all for what... Steam on my PS3...? Whoopdy-fucking-doo.... I guess it's the first cross-platform gaming available though right? Assuming that it does support PC-PS3 cross-platform?

    Cooking soup in a saucepan?

Not quite, as per a previous thread is was a borscht. At the end it came out very thick, more like a sauce/chutney/stew rather than a soup. Delicious as it was (Dad and I ate a serve of it in that state :P) I boiled some water and mixed it in - which seemed to give it a better... whatsthewordimlookingfor. I assume this was the right thing to do if a soup comes out too thick? I suspect that next time I should use a bit less heat (I was more worried about ensuring the potatoes cook than I needed to be) as well as keep the lid on the entire time. Rob. Yeah dude once your potatoes cook out they will then start to starch up your soup and make it thick and gluggy. You want them cooked... but not overcooked. Nice looking Borscht. I was taught how to cook it when I was working under Andrew Mirosch. You won't find a better Borscht in Australia than Mirosch's Borscht.
