  1. Hi, As far as i understand its not the best time to purchase a HDD, or even a SSD. I have purchased this little fella https://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_p...oducts_id=13897 and need to find it a disk drive. The NAS is going to be my backup unit for the PC and 2 net books (around 750GB of data), and will also be the streaming server for my WD TV live (http://wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=330) The TV live wants either a Samba or NTFS drive to be able to play back. I am looking for something that is quite, becuase this unit is going to live in the bedroom with my router, and modem. I would be looking for the largest and quite drivers (WD Ears are OK) for less then $250.

How would I add a search button to a webpage.

The altavista web master site is no longer around, so you have to suffer with stuff that sucks. When i was learning about web development you had xoom for your unlimited storage, and bandwidth, and alatvista for babble fish, and web master tools.

is there some way you can embed a com control in the web page to use the browsers inbuilt find? (aka ctrl+f) I know back in the days of Windows 95, and the free version of front page that came with 95 plus there was an search element you could embed in the page that did the exact same thing.

    Wireless DVI reciver

Hi all, So finally looking at getting my NAS, and have been speaking with my wife about a possible HTPC instead, shes against it, but is happy to have wither a dongle sticking out the side of the TV, or a cable running to a wireless receiver. I am unsure how i would control the abilty to transmit video over the network from the NAS to the TV via a wireless signal, but did a quick google and found something called a Broadcom 7520 ( http://www.broadcom.com/products/BCM7520 ). We have a netgear DIR-300 wireless router connected to the Belkin modem, and will be connected to the NAS via one of the 10/100 ports on the back. I know heaps of people say 'dont use a wireless device to watch video on the TV' - is there a proven reason why, even a a link to a you tube video with some one having rage? We have a PC, and 2x netbooks that currently use the wireless on the router, normally the PC, and 1x netbook are only used. Thread title should read "Wireless DVI receiver, watching videos from the NAS on the TV", no idea what i would be doing watching videos from the NSA

    Wireless DVI reciver

So i brought one of the above, quite happy with its first night of use, as expected its running some form of Linux inside and i need to use SAMBA to access the NAS, but have been happy watching you tube over 2 bars of Wireless G - once i start to stream real video i might need to invest in a Ethernet over power device - i will find out on the weekend.

    Wireless DVI reciver

I would assume that Ethernet over power would have to be on the same circuit at both ends? The main switch for where the modem plugs in looks like a 4 hole power board that some one has installed over a old broken socket, would this still work? If that's the case, then can i get a very compact HTPC (credit card sized) that i can plug one end into the TV's DVI port (or HDMI) and the other end into a Ethernet port, and use a remote control to access files on the NAS to play back?

    BIOS recovery?

Whats the year you live in? I cant find 2GB drives anymore at retail.
  11. Hi all, I am finally in need for a NAS, however i NEED it to be silent as its going to go into our master bed room with the wireless router and ADSL modem I am looking for a micro ATX with built in wireless, and 10/100(/1000) Ethernet & VGA (I love the mobo in my sig but they don't make it any more) The NAS will be used for back up from the two netbooks, and the PC, plus will be used for what ever files my son is going to stick on it over the next few years as we teach him how to use the computer (hes only 2 atm) We have 1x xp, 1x 7 1x vista - no other network enabled devices
  12. Most easy way is with winhelp's HOSTS file - http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm otherwise you need to find out the URL for the add, and open up HOSTS (%windir%\system32\drivers\etc) in notepad, and follow the example that Microsoft provided

    New PC build for 2012

SilverStone mini cases normally come with a SFX PSU (Ie SG 06) - so if your in need of more power then the default power supply it might be hard to get your hands on one - most of SFX PSU's i have seen come with a 450W maxim - but SilverStone mini cases are VERY nice.

    Silent NAS

Looking at non appliance boxes is not really going to be the deal i am after (Sugo PC & HTPC style boxes are a bit big) - the box i am going to get is going to be stuck behind a bed side table, and get smothered once in a while with clothing (when my wife is to lazy to put things away) so i suspect a syno box might be a good choice. Because i making an outlay on a bit of kit i have never seen in the flesh, or know much about i would rather purchase it from a retail store - sadly my local retailer only gets stuff from Altec - do you know any sydney retailers that would have a syno box in the flesh, or that can order them?
  15. Consider pointing the advertisement server to 127.0.0.1 in HOSTS? I found atomic use to be real slow when it was loading the add's.

    Silent NAS

Thanks for the response, i looked at the USB Two Syno - but its only got the single disk If i was going to build my own NAS for the silence factor would it be worth getting SSD's - as they cost 5.50-6.00 a GB (Intel 250/300 GB) for back up use - or would it be better getting something like a Seagate Green (EARS models)?
  17. The mobo in my sig is highly recommended - its got more USB ports then you could put a stick in - however its about 18 months old and likes first gen i3/i5 so you would end up with an OLD 32 bit machine. (Not what your after)
  18. are you going to be using the same case - if so - what is it?

Sounds like an documented feature L)
  20. After having lots of fun with CentOS 5, and my VPS (that i finally killed with some random yum package (lost the ability to run anything other then i486 applications)) i am now running a Windows 2003 R2 (Sp2) VPS for messing around in, and also for some other cool testing. So i connected to the VPS via mstsc and ran Microsoft Update, after doing so i chose start>reboot (chose the reason why) in the mstsc connection, and let it go. After expecting Parallels to be kind and reboot the VPS (as VM Ware would) i attempted to connect to the VPS with mstsc again and get the error that basically tells me it not running. I jump onto the VPS management page and find the Container is not active, i hit Start, and wait. The web page confirms that its launching, and the after 120 seconds or so i get 'The Container is down at the moment.' What can i do to bring this back online? Have i killed something with one of the updates? I don't want to have to call or email the provider seeing this is the first day i have had the VPS and tell them i killed it all ready.

    Wireless Antenna's

    Thanks for the feedback
  22. I am having trouble with my wireless connection, i suspect that becuase the router is stuck behind my bed side table, and the computer is in the living room (about 10m away) that the wireless signal is being blocked by all the stuff in the way. I purchased a TP-Link USB Dongle thinking that my integrated wireless card was dead, but its still dropping out at random times. I would like to purchase a Antenna like the TP-Link ones on PCCG http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_p...oducts_id=14482 / http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_p...oducts_id=17146 Is this going to improve my performance? On another note by first gen iinet naked modem is around 4 years old, and has been serving me well, the 2nd VOIP link is having trouble with noise, and i think its time to replace the modem. As the modem is NOT wireless should i think about ditching the wireless router, and the ADSL modem and getting something like BOB?

    Wireless Antenna's

After posting above i have been able to unscrew the Antenna - so 3rd party should be fine Also broadcast is at 100% - i stuck the router on top of the bed side table, and now have full strength - i'll see what i can do about getting that adapter with the 130cm lead so i can hide the thing again.
