  1. yeah I think so also - while I was away I actually asked the person house sitting for us and he said the power went out twice ~ PC was off but not unplugged ><
  2. ok turns out one of the kingston sticks of ram was dead - machine booting now - installed win7 onto an old 80GB IDE drive i had - even managed to salvage some stuff off the dying disk that means that in 4 weeks i've had mobo die, vid card die (bought new mobo here and got it running with the now dying hdd and now dead ram stick) hdd die, ram stick die ..... winning luck right there! cheers for the help, looks like i'm back in business
  3. Heyas, I'm having a major melt down when it comes to fixing my machine as of late. Basically I went on holidays for a week (had the machine shut down) and came back and it wouldn't power on for more than 5 seconds. So I'd power it on (nothing would come up on screen) then 5 seconds later it would shut down and power on again (like it was rebooting). I tried with a corsair 620W psu and a seasonic 650W psu - I tried with a gainward 8800GT and an inno3d 8800GTS - I tried with different ram combinations - I tried rebuilding/reseating everything - I tried with bare minimums connected etc etc. Unfortunately my Silverstone TJ07 doesn't seem to have a PC speaker so listening to bios beeps to determine the problem isn't an option. Anyhow, I concluded that the problem must of been that my Gigabye P35-DS3P motherboard must of died so I ordered a Gigabyte EP45-UD3P to replace it. I built the machine and it booted no worries. It worked fine for four days (using the corsair 620W psu and inno3d 8800GTS - my gainward card died but that is another story altogether). I had it on sometimes over night (downloading patches and such) during that four day period. Other times I shut it down and powered up the follow day without fault. Times were good, it was the first time I had a working computer for 4 weeks. I was a happy chappy. On the fourth day as I was shutting down that night I heard a loud "click" and I was unsure of the source of it. The next day I booted up and heard the clicks again and determined that it was my last remaining IDE drive dying. The only remaining storage in my computer. It managed to boot into windows but blue screened when i clicked into "my computer" - I rebooted again and once again it bluescreened. So I figured "ok, the machine is booting cause windows is struggling with the drive - if i install windows onto another drive maybe it wont bluescreen and i can attempt to salvage some of the data." Off I go again, I look in the cupboard and find another 80Gb IDE drive and attach it - I get into the bios to see that the drive has autodetected which it has. I exit bios without saving settings and the machine boots. It doesn't make it to the "boot from cd prompt" - where it would normally list all the devices just before that option all it has is a black screen with a blinking underscore (i wasn't waiting for the hello neo at this point). From there I power the machine down and attempt to boot it again - no image displays on screen and the power remains flowing for 12-15 seconds before it powers down and reboots again. It powers up with no image and repeats the same cycle, powering down after 12-15 seconds and rebooting again. So essentially what I'm left with is exactly what it was like 4 weeks ago (with the older motherboard) except it stays up for 12-15 seconds instead of 5-6 seconds. No image on screen - nothing. I had ordered a 1TB WD Black to put into the machine so I'd have another drive to get it going with that has decent capacity but unfortunately at this stage it doesn't even look like it's going to get that far. So, is my motherboard DOA? Is there anything else I can try to get it working? Things I have tried since the new mobo died: - booting bare minimum (no peripherals, drives, vidcard {with and without} etc) - reseating mobo and cpu - reseating vid card Things I have yet to do: - check each ram stick individually, as i did this with my older mobo and it made no difference - check with the seasonic 650W psu as i did this with my older mobo and it made no difference I will probably end up trying these anyway just in case, and just to make sure it is covered before I return the mobo as DOA. However, why did my machine run fine for 4 days then decide to die basically suddenly and showing similar symptoms? My friend has said that I NEED to get a UPS ($99) and possibly a new PSU for peace of mind - saying that perhaps it is destroying parts. Or am I just incredibly unlucky? I may have missed some information of things i've already tried (like resetting bios - tried it), which I'll try to fix if people pick up along the way. My parts list: - Silverstone TJ07 - Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 (running at 200x11 - lol is this even right?) - Gigabyte EP45-UD3P Motherboard - Inno3D 8800GTS 320MB gfx card - Corsair 620W PSU - Seasonic 650W PSU - 2x 1GB Team DDR2 800Mhz (let me know if model # needed) - 2x 1GB Kingston DDR2 800Mhz (let me know if model # needed) - 320GB Seagate IDE drive - 80GB Maxtor IDE drive (the one I installed in an attempt to install another copy of windows) - 1TB WD Black (arrived this morning, how useful =p) - G15 USB Keyboard - G9 USB Mouse - MS keyboard PS2 (for bios access if USB is disabled) - Asus 22" WS LCD
  4. +1 for thread sticky, so long as it's continually updated =p

    Budget PC

i'd recommend 2Gb of ram also - are they going to be using their existing monitor?
  6. thanks dasa i'll look into those; they don't seem too expensive to last me a bit before dx11 master_scythe - i'm on the sunshine coast but i've lost my drivers license until november, hence umart for the delivery option. I'll look into the part prices though and see if it's worth me possibly organising some transport down there to pickup the parts from MSY instead. cheers again, it's looking pretty well finalised just waiting on some krudd money and some super returns to come in
  7. revised list: Asus P6T SE - $339 - pccasegear (it is the cheapest motherboard I could find with 2x triple channel ram slots and SLI - i couldnt find many opinions but the P6T got decent reviews) Intel i7 920 - $444.50 - umart OCZ DDR3 PC3-10666 Platinum 3x2GB OCZ3P1333LV6GK - $159 pccasegear _OR_ OCZ DDR3 PC3-10666 i7 Edition 3x2GB OCZ3X1333LV6GK - $169 (is the $10 increase justifiable?) WD Black 1TB - $179 - umart (might go without raid for the time being to keep the cost down) Case - Silverstone TJ07 (already own) PSU - either my corsair 620w or seasonic 650w (already own) GFX - inno3d 8800GTS 320W (planning on running this until dx11 cards or released, or should i look at upgrading to a $300ish videocard?) LCD - Asus 22" 2ms (already own, forget model #) TOTAL - $1121.50 (quoting cheaper ram) Thoughts on this? Should i go for the slightly dearer ram or no point? Any recommendation for a quality HSF combo and/or mounting bracket for this setup? Thoughts on going for raid with this build versus holding off until later? (I've never actually had raid before). Certainly looks a lot cheaper without an extra $179 added to the list haha =p Thanks again
  8. yeah SLi isn't that important to me however having 2x triple channel ram slots is and most boards with 6 slots seem to have SLI support. Chances are I'll never justify the cost but can't complain about having the option there for it. Ram suggestions seem decent thanks, I might see if umart offer something similar just cause they can deliver
  9. Cheers dudes - i play daoc, wow, l4d and tf2 at native res of 1680x1050 for the last three but never really worried about having to run highest settings or anything like that - it doesn't change the gameplay so i dont worry about it too much. I value framerate over graphic quality. It's just a shame my Gainward GS 8800GT 512Mb died (one of those little black transistor things basically fell off it ><) forcing me to go back to my inno3d 8800GTS 320Mb. Building it in the next couple of weeks when some krudd money comes in.
  10. Heyas, I went away on a holiday and came home to discover my PC won't power up. I want to get my current machine fixed (I think it's a mobo issue as i've tried both my corsair 620W and seasonic 650W and the same power issue persisted. Anyhow, I've also been looking at building an i7 system but I want to do it as cheaply as possible whilst keeping it a strong and balanced build. My list so far is: Asus P6T SE - $339 - pccasegear (it is the cheapest motherboard I could find with 2x triple channel ram slots and SLI - i couldnt find many opinions but the P6T got decent reviews) Intel i7 920 - $446 - umart G.Skill 6Gb PC12800 - $229 - umart (is this ram okay? could i aim for something cheaper without much of a performance hit?) Seagate 1TB (x2) - $310 - umart PSU - either my corsair 620w or seasonic 650w that i already have GFX - inno3d 8800GTS 320W (planning on running this until dx11 cards or released, or should i look at upgrading to a $300ish videocard?) Mainly my queries are about the motherboard, ram and videocard. If anyone has suggestions on whether this configuration is a good plan or whether I can costs back further without a massive performance hit I'd love to hear about it. I'd really like to do it as cheaply as possible but I want the mobo to have 2x triple channel memory for the option to go up to 12Gb down the road. Eventually I'll buy a new case, videocard and monitor to have two complete seperate systems (my current machine that isn't working is a 2.2Ghz core2duo with 4Gb of ddr2) Cheers
  11. Interesting. It's funny that you mention this because it was a problem that has occurred in the past and did just seem to "magically" fix itself =P It's been running fine for a month or so, and before that it ran poorly for about the same..... before that it was fine and that was for like a year. Have you got any links to the references you were reading at all? Thanks heaps
  12. So I found an old 8800GTS 320Mb and plugged that into my machine. It runs at x16 and I haven't changed any settings. Could it be that my gainward card is faulty? Has anyone heard of cards "breaking" in this manner?

  14. hmm cheers, I still couldn't find an option to change the PCI-E from x1 to x16 though. I saw an option to change the Mhz though :| Any ideas on what I should be looking for? I was expecting something like: PCI Express [auto] or [x1] or [x8] or [x16] or something in the BIOS.
  15. Heyas, I'm having some trouble in WoW atm and they recommended I load GPU-Z to check my BUS speed. It says that my PCI is PCI 2.0 x16 @ x1 I looked through the BIOS and cannot find where to change this - I have heard in the past that gigabyte have extra settings that are accessible by a shortcut key combination but I cannot remember what this is. It is a gigabyte motherboard, P35-DS3P rev1.1 from dxdiag: System Model: P35-DS3P BIOS: Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG Thanks to any who can assist.
