  1. well it wont fit 16GB anyway new cooler only allows 12GB to fit :P so im selling the other 4GB to a friend for his new build. i wouldn't have bought so much if it wasn't cheap as chips. ahh that's the PSU with the capacitors on the PCIE cables a friend was telling me about. i read as much as i could find on the internet and the general consensus is that apparently they do SFA. too late now though but ill definitely tell my friend about it since he is building a similar rig and thinks he can get away with using his old computers home brand 500w PSU haha.
  2. yeah its definately the psu i listened everywhere and since my case has a seperate compartment for psu it was easier to pinpoint. even with vsync enabled i get clicking noises that sound like a cricket lives in my case. its just nowhere near as bad as an unlocked framerate which sounds like a plague of angry crickets live in there.
  3. my ocz 850 whines but only when playing games. if you have the same problem as me its called coil whine and happens when current passes through the coils and makes them vibrate. when its running cpu benchmarks or idling it stays quiet. does the noise sound anything like this?
  4. thought id update people on the power supply i bought. i wouldn't recommend ocz z series psu's they seem to have a pretty high tendency to have coil whine especially the higher 1250w models. it is a very nice psu being modular and gold rated and nice looking but my 850 unfortunately has this coil whine too. whenever a game is really cranking my video card i hear a pretty high pitched wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee noise. it can mostly be alleviated by forcing vsync and locking everything to 60fps and wearing headphones, but you can still hear it buzzing away just not as highly pitched. loading up the witcher 2 menu i had fraps running and noticed it was hitting 2000fps and the psu was screaaaaaaaming! this is exactly what it sounds like. thought about rma but read that people had spent heaps of money on postage only to get a psu sent back to them with the same problem. it has 5 year warranty though so i have that long to decide if i cant put up with it any longer haha.

    TRUE 120 on i5 2500k

seems i have lost my thermal paste lucky there wasn't much left anyway. ill need to buy some more next week. arctic silver 5 is still everybodys favourite flavour? just noticed we basically have the same computer nobodyishere :P

    TRUE 120 on i5 2500k

after about 2 hrs of bf3 temps hit 75-78c. not acceptable for the cooler or the clock rate at all. just as bad as IBT really. will try lapping over the weekend i live in townsville and the heat is only going to get worse. mid summer is going to kill my chip! edit: decided to give the 1.26 volt a quick spin after all, took 1.32v in bios to get 1.26 under load. stable so far and cool. will try these settings for the next few days see if i have any crashes. left cpu pll at 1.8 and qpi at 1.05 for now.

    TRUE 120 on i5 2500k

i will try 1.26v tomorrow i think im at my daily limit of bsod rage for today :P i dont think that im gonna get down that low though my chip seems to be a bit voltage hungry unfortunately. this board also seems to have a massive amount of vdrop too so no doubt ill have to set it to some far away number to get load vcore of 1.26. ive had idle temps as low as 24c with my aircon on and the computer doing absolutely nothing for 30mins to an hour. i do have speedstep and all that jazz enabled so speeds throttle down to 1.6ghz and 0.9v at idle. here is my hyperpi temps. far better than intel burn test temps. but again the temps have dropped dramatically since i lowered clock from 4.5 to 4.4ghz. might have gone wrong somewhere with my voltages who knows. notice the huge difference in voltages between hw monitor and cpuz/coretemp?

    TRUE 120 on i5 2500k

i got some paperclips and made them into something similar like the brackets that hold the original fan on. pretty dodgy but they do the trick haha. temperatures didnt change so i got the shits with it, reset bios to everything auto and dropped clock to 4.4ghz and tested temps. 10-15c cooler ..? at 4.5 it would refuse to boot without cpu pll enabled and either a massive vcore or high LLC setting.... now its happy to chug along 100mhz slower and all settings auto. cpuz and coretemp tell me it runs at 1.38v under load and touchbios + cpuid hw monitor telling me 1.32 so who knows what its really running at

    TRUE 120 on i5 2500k

i suppose the positioning of my computer leaves much to be desired as it sits in the corner of my room and hot air exhausts into a cornered wall. i will try the 2nd fan trick but i dont have a 2nd pair of the silly clips that hold the fan on. i spose i can dodgy up something. the case is a fractal define xl and i think they do tend to run slightly hotter due to their sound deadening inside the case. as far as air flow goes though it shouldnt be a problem, i have 1x 120mm fan on the front of the case sucking air in, the cpu fan, a 140mm fan on the rear blowing it out as well as a 180mm fan on the top also exhausting air, hdds and psu are in a seperate enclosure at the bottom and all wires are routed behind the mobo. it was hitting 79c when i was playing dirt3 the other day but that was on a higher voltage. i have since played around with it endlessly trying to lower temps. if more fans fail to do anything i suppose i can try lapping HS and reapplying paste. it amazes me when i read others saying yeah i get 60c load temps at same speeds :(
  10. is anyone else running this setup in their rig? im running a thermalright ultra extreme 120 with an antec 3 speed 120mm fan with i5 2500k at 4.5ghz. what temps is anyone running with their overclocks? im running 1.31v LLC lvl 6 and my temps are hitting 77-80c on intel burn test :S. this seems way too high to me for what is supposed to be a exceptional cooler. im even using the revision b bracket which clamps the heatsink down alot harder. possible that ive done the heat paste terribly wrong or are these temps around average for the cooler??
  11. thanks for all the replies guys. i ended up going with the ocz 850w z series, which has already arrived. shame the rest of the computer hasn't haha. now my only dilemma is trying to track down thermalrights Socket 1156 Bolt-Thru-Kit for my TRUE 120. im starting to lose hope ive emailed thermalright once last week and once today about it, no reply yet but ill wait a few more days. what a pain in the ass just for a bracket :(
  12. well i managed to edit and delete the whole post i typed whoops. i bought the ocz 850 from pccg thanks very much 194 express posted :)
  13. i have been looking to build a new pc for a while now and have decided on all the parts that i need for this new set up, except of course the PSU. silly me decided to procrastinate in buying the parts earlier on in the year and now 2 things have happened. our dollar is taking a nose dive and now the parts are all up about $50-75 more expensive then they were last month, and the universal bracket for my TRUE 120 to be used on socket 1155 is no longer for sale on pc case gear, and as far as i can see no where else in australia. so i have 2 questions. what is a well suited PSU to the system i want to buy and does anybody know of a place where i can purchase this bracket cause ill be damned if im running my new baby on stock cooling. i am looking to overclock the cpu to the all hailed 5ghz, and im not interested in SLI now or any time in the future really. so with that in mind here are the parts: CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K MOBO: Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD4 RAM: Corsair Vengeance CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9 16GB VIDEO: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 570 1280MB Overclocked V2 CASE: Fractal Design XL Full Tower Titanium Case PSU: ?? had looked at buying a CoolerMaster Silent Pro Gold 800W but im thinking that it might be overkill for what im after. also the website im looking to buy from (computer alliance) doesnt seem to have this psu anymore and id like to buy everything from the 1 place to save on postage. i have a 1TB and a 2TB hard drive and an OCZ vertex 2 SSD that i will be putting in the system, probably be chucking another 2tb drive in sometime in the future so not looking at running a million hard drives either. will be aiming to purchase the computer this week before our dollar gets any worse :P

    cant seem to crack 4ghz

i cant have the ram running at a slower speed than the FSB :( 2.00 is the lowest it will go and i think this is the same with alot of gigabyte/asus boards from the era. i was looking for that option when the crashing first started because i used to run my old athlon 2800+ with stock speed ram and higher FSB. looks like im stuck with 3.82ghz

    cant seem to crack 4ghz

no idea where the option to up my northbridge voltages is in my bios. i did a quick search on google, is it something to do with GTLREF voltages?
